How to create an online pharmacy store with WooCommerce

WooCommerce Time About 1–3 hours for a basic storefront; longer for prescription workflows and compliance review 6 steps Updated 7 Sep 2026

WOOCOMMERCE
The short answer

You can use WooCommerce to sell approved over-the-counter products, but prescription medicines need a properly licensed pharmacy, compliant prescription handling and a payment provider that accepts regulated products. Set up the store manually first, then use a pharmacy-focused theme to shorten the design work.

The route
  1. 01Confirm what you can sell
  2. 02Install and configure WooCommerce
  3. 03Create pharmacy product categories
  4. 04Set payments, tax and delivery
  5. 05Add the prescription workflow
  6. 06Choose the fast storefront route

What you need

  • A WordPress site with WooCommerce installed
  • A registered pharmacy business and any licences required in your jurisdiction
  • Admin access to WordPress and your payment provider
  • Product, stock, delivery and tax information
  • A privacy policy and terms reviewed for your market

Confirm what you can sell

Decide whether the store will sell only general health products and over-the-counter medicines, or whether it will handle prescription medicines. WooCommerce provides shopping, checkout, stock and order features, but it does not make a business a licensed pharmacy or validate prescriptions.

Before adding prescription products, confirm the rules for your country and every region where you will deliver. In the United States, the FDA advises consumers to use state-licensed pharmacies and warns against websites that sell prescription medicines without a valid prescription. Treat licensing, pharmacist oversight, prescription review, privacy and fulfilment as business requirements, not theme features.

Install and configure WooCommerce

In WordPress, install and activate WooCommerce, then complete its setup screens. Set your store address, selling locations, currency, customer account options and the pages for the shop, cart, checkout and account areas.

Review WooCommerce > Settings rather than relying on defaults. The settings include products, tax, shipping, payments, accounts and privacy, emails and advanced options. The labels and extra sections may change when extensions are installed.

Create pharmacy product categories

Use clear categories such as vitamins, first aid, personal care, medical devices and approved over-the-counter medicines. Add a product name, active ingredients where relevant, directions, warnings, pack size, brand, price, SKU, stock quantity, images and delivery restrictions.

Use variable products when customers choose a genuine variation such as pack size or flavour. Do not describe prescription medicines as available for immediate purchase unless your prescription and pharmacist workflow supports that status. Keep product information accurate and maintain an internal process for recalls and stock changes.

Set payments, tax and delivery

Enable a payment gateway that has approved your business and product range. Some payment providers restrict medicines, supplements, telehealth and other regulated products, so confirm this before launch rather than adding a gateway that may later suspend payouts.

Create shipping zones and methods for the places you actually serve. Configure tax rates with a qualified tax professional because WooCommerce can calculate the rates you enter but does not decide what your business must charge. WooCommerce supports manual tax setup and tax extensions, while shipping methods depend on your zones and installed extensions.

Add the prescription workflow

WooCommerce does not provide a complete prescription verification, pharmacist approval or controlled-medicine workflow by itself. If you handle prescriptions, use a specialist pharmacy or healthcare integration that matches your jurisdiction, or connect the store to the pharmacy system that already manages prescriptions and patient records.

Do not ask customers to upload prescriptions to an ordinary media library or send sensitive health information through an unprotected contact form. Define who reviews each request, when payment is taken, how rejected prescriptions are handled, which products require approval and how records are retained. Get legal and security advice before collecting patient data.

Choose the fast storefront route

The manual route is fine when you are selling a small catalogue of non-prescription health products and can configure the shop, checkout and delivery pages yourself. The drawback is that you still have to design the homepage, product templates, consultation pages and trust information from scratch.

For a quicker front end, use Diza Pharmacy Store Elementor WooCommerce Theme. It provides pharmacy-oriented product layouts, Elementor homepage editing, responsive templates and consultation-booking functionality. Install it from Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme, activate it, then customise the layouts with Elementor. It can reduce design work, but it does not replace pharmacy licensing, prescription review, regulated-product approval or secure healthcare integrations.

Questions

Can WooCommerce run an online pharmacy without extra plugins?
WooCommerce can run a basic shop for suitable over-the-counter products without a pharmacy-specific plugin. It includes product, cart, checkout, order, stock, payment and shipping features. Prescription verification, pharmacist approval, patient-data handling and some product restrictions are not complete WooCommerce core features, so regulated sales usually require a specialist integration and professional compliance review.
Can I sell prescription medicines through WooCommerce?
You may be able to, but only if your pharmacy and fulfilment process meet the laws and licensing rules where you operate and deliver. You also need a valid prescription process, pharmacist oversight where required, suitable records and a payment provider that accepts the business. Do not publish prescription products as ordinary instant-purchase items until those requirements are confirmed.
How should I add medicines as WooCommerce products?
Add each item with an accurate name, category, ingredients, strength, pack size, directions, warnings, price, SKU, stock level and product image. Use variations for genuine choices such as pack size. Keep prescription products separate from normal retail products if they require approval, and make sure product claims and labels comply with the rules in your market.
Why was my pharmacy payment account suspended?
A pharmacy payment account can be suspended when the provider discovers restricted medicines, unsupported supplements, prescription handling or business information that was not disclosed during approval. Contact the provider before launch, describe the exact products and workflow, and keep evidence of licences and fulfilment arrangements. Switching gateways without fixing the underlying compliance issue can lead to another suspension.
Is a pharmacy WooCommerce theme enough to launch the store?
No. A theme changes the appearance and page layouts, but it does not provide pharmacy licensing, prescription validation, pharmacist review, compliant patient-data storage or approval from a payment provider. A pharmacy-focused theme can speed up the storefront design, while the regulated operating process must be supplied by your business and any specialist services you use.
