How to create a construction business website with WordPress

Start with a short sitemap rather than designing the homepage in isolation. Create Home, Services, Projects, About and Contact pages. Add separate pages for major services such as renovations, commercial builds or groundworks if customers search for them individually.

Prepare the content before you style the site: service descriptions, areas served, accreditations, testimonials, phone number, email address and a short explanation of what happens after someone requests a quote. Use real project photography where possible, and keep image file sizes under control so large galleries do not make the site slow.

Choose a theme that supports the editing method you want to use. With a block theme, go to Appearance > Editor to edit templates, navigation, headers, footers, colours, typography and spacing. The Site Editor is available when a block theme is active.

With a classic theme, look under Appearance > Customize, but do not assume that menu exists for every theme. Block themes commonly hide the Customizer, which is a frequent source of confusion when following older tutorials.

Make the first screen answer three questions: what do you build, where do you work and how can someone contact you. Use a strong project image, a direct heading such as “Commercial and residential construction in [area]”, a short supporting sentence and a button such as Request a quote.

Follow the hero section with selected services, two or three featured projects, trust signals, a short process section, testimonials and a final contact call to action. Set a consistent content width, heading scale, button style and colour palette through the Site Editor’s global Styles where available. WordPress supports site-wide colour, typography, layout and spacing controls in the Site Editor.

Build each service page around the customer’s problem, your process, the type of work you handle, the locations you cover and the next step. For projects, create one page or post per completed job with the project type, location, scope, materials, timeframe, photographs and result. Link each project back to the relevant service page.

Use image captions and descriptive text rather than filling every section with stock photography. Keep navigation short: Home, Services, Projects, About and Contact are usually enough. A block theme’s Navigation block lets you edit the menu structure and add published pages from the editor.

Create and publish a Home page, then go to Settings > Reading, choose A static page under “Your homepage displays”, select Home as the homepage and select a separate Blog page only if you need one.

For quote requests, add a form plugin and include only useful fields such as name, email, phone, project type, location, estimated scope and message. Test delivery to the correct inbox, the confirmation message and the form on a phone. On block themes, check whether a Front Page template is overriding the Reading setting; WordPress notes that a Front Page template can take precedence over the selected static page.

Install and activate the theme from Appearance > Themes > Add New, import a suitable demo if provided, then replace the demo text, images, logo, contact details and project entries. Review every imported page before publishing. Demo content often includes placeholder phone numbers, testimonials and images, so leaving those in place can make a real business site look unfinished or send enquiries to the wrong address.
