How to create a creative agency website in WordPress

Design & Layout Time About 1–2 days for a polished first version 6 steps Updated 10 Sep 2026

DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create a simple creative agency website with WordPress pages, blocks and a static homepage, without a special plugin. A portfolio theme or page builder becomes useful when you need masonry grids, reusable case-study layouts, filters and faster visual editing.

The route
  1. 01Plan the site structure
  2. 02Choose a theme and design system
  3. 03Create pages and navigation
  4. 04Build the portfolio manually
  5. 05Design the homepage and case studies
  6. 06Check mobile and launch

What you need

  • A WordPress website with admin access
  • Your logo, colours, fonts and brand images
  • Project images and case-study content
  • A contact method such as an email address or form

Plan the site structure

Start with a small structure: Home, Services, Work or Portfolio, About and Contact. Add a separate page for each important service or case study only when it has enough useful content to justify one.

Prepare the content before designing. For each project, collect the client or project name, brief, your role, process, final result, images and a clear next step. This prevents the common problem of building attractive empty layouts that are difficult to finish.

Choose a theme and design system

Use a block theme if you want to work mainly in WordPress, or a classic theme with a visual builder if you need more detailed layout controls. Block themes let you adjust global colours, typography, spacing and templates from Appearance > Editor; classic themes commonly use Appearance > Customize.

Set your type scale, colour palette, content width, button style and spacing before designing individual pages. Keep the system restrained so the work remains the visual focus rather than competing with oversized effects, animations or unrelated fonts.

Create pages and navigation

Go to Pages > Add New and create the core pages. Set Home as the static front page under Settings > Reading, and choose a separate Blog page only if you plan to publish articles. WordPress pages are intended for non-chronological content such as About, Services and Contact.

Add the published pages to your navigation. With a block theme, edit the Navigation block in the Site Editor; with a classic theme, use the menu controls provided by the theme. Keep the main menu short and include one obvious contact or enquiry action.

Build the portfolio manually

For a small portfolio, create one page per project and link those pages from a Work page using image, gallery, columns or Query Loop blocks. You can also use regular posts if you want projects to share an archive and featured-image layout.

WordPress does not include a dedicated portfolio content type by default. If you need project-specific fields, filtering by service, taxonomy archives or a reusable single-project template, use a portfolio or custom-content plugin. Custom post types should normally be registered in a plugin rather than a theme, so the project content is not lost if you change themes.

Design the homepage and case studies

Make the homepage answer three questions quickly: what the agency does, what it has made and how a visitor can start a conversation. A practical order is a short positioning statement, selected work, services, proof or client list, a short process and a contact call to action.

Use the same case-study structure on every project: overview, challenge, approach, deliverables, outcome and related work. Add descriptive image alt text, captions where context matters and a text summary so the page is still useful if images load slowly or are not viewed.

Check mobile and launch

Review every page at desktop, tablet and mobile widths. Check that the navigation opens, headings do not wrap awkwardly, buttons are easy to tap, galleries do not overflow and project images are not unnecessarily large. Elementor provides separate responsive controls for device sizes, including typography, spacing, ordering and visibility.

Before launch, test the contact route, page titles, permalinks, cookie or privacy requirements, 404 page, social sharing image and backups. If you import a complete starter site, do it on a fresh or staging installation first: demo imports can fail partially, and imported Elementor pages may need to be edited in Elementor rather than the normal WordPress editor.

Fast way: Use Pixelpiernyc Creative Agency and Portolio with its Elementor layouts, masonry grids, carousels and demo import. Replace the demo copy and images, keep only the pages you need, then check the imported design at mobile widths before publishing.

Questions

Can I create a creative agency website without a plugin?
Yes, you can create a simple agency website with WordPress pages, blocks, a navigation menu and a static homepage without a special plugin. The manual route is suitable for a small number of services and projects. You will usually need extra functionality for portfolio filters, custom project fields, advanced forms, sliders or a complex case-study archive.
Should projects be pages or posts in WordPress?
Use pages when you have a small, stable portfolio and want to control each project individually. Use posts when projects need a shared archive, featured images, categories or a Query Loop. If you need a dedicated portfolio area with project fields and filters, a custom post type is more maintainable than forcing everything into ordinary pages.
How many projects should an agency website show?
Show enough projects to demonstrate the type and quality of work you want to attract, rather than filling the site with every available item. Three to six well-written case studies are often easier to understand than a large grid of thumbnails. Make each project explain the brief, your contribution, the result and what a prospective client should do next.
Why does my imported Elementor design look different on mobile?
Imported designs often contain desktop spacing, large headings or multi-column layouts that need separate mobile adjustments. Open the page in Elementor's responsive view and check typography, padding, column direction, image sizes and hidden elements. If the frontend looks stale after an import or update, regenerate the builder's CSS or files and data, then clear caching before checking again.
Do I need a portfolio plugin for a creative agency site?
No, not for a basic portfolio made from a few pages and image sections. A portfolio plugin becomes worthwhile when you need sortable projects, service categories, custom fields, archive pages, reusable single-project templates or easier content management for a growing team. Choose the simplest setup that matches the number of projects you expect to maintain.
