How to create a sports club website

Design & Layout Time About 1–2 hours for the first version 7 steps Updated 14 Sep 2026

DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create a simple sports club website with WordPress pages, posts, a navigation menu and a block-based layout. If you need fixtures, player profiles, standings or statistics, use a sports-focused theme or plugin rather than building those data structures by hand.

The route
  1. 01Plan the club site structure
  2. 02Create the core WordPress pages
  3. 03Build the layout manually
  4. 04Add navigation and club content
  5. 05Choose how to manage sports data
  6. 06Check the site before launch
  7. 07Use a sports theme for the fast way

What you need

  • A WordPress site with administrator access
  • Your club logo, colours and photographs
  • The main pages and club information ready
  • Fixture, roster or statistics data if required

Plan the club site structure

List the information visitors need before you choose colours or add photographs. A useful starting structure is Home, Club, Teams, Fixtures and results, News, Gallery and Contact. Add a Shop or Join the club page only if you will keep it up to date.

Keep the homepage focused on the next fixture, latest result, latest news, team links and a clear contact or registration button. Do not put every piece of club information on the front page.

Create the core WordPress pages

Go to Pages and create the permanent pages your club needs. Use pages for information that does not belong in a date-based news stream, such as club history, training times, committee details, safeguarding information and contact details. WordPress supports building these pages with the block editor.

Use Posts for match reports, announcements and club news. Give posts useful categories such as News, Match reports and Club notices so visitors can filter related content later.

Build the layout manually

If you use a block theme, open Appearance > Editor to edit the header, footer, templates, colours, typography and page layouts. The Site Editor is available only with a block theme, and changes to shared header or footer parts can affect every page using them.

Use a restrained colour palette based on the club kit, a consistent image ratio for team photographs and a wide content area for fixtures or tables. Preview the homepage at a narrow width before saving. Large match photos and crowded columns are common causes of a poor mobile layout.

Add navigation and club content

With a block theme, manage the menu from Appearance > Editor > Navigation, then add or arrange links such as Teams, Fixtures, News and Contact. A navigation menu does not automatically appear on the site unless it is assigned to a Navigation block in a template part such as the header.

With a classic theme, use its menu settings instead. Keep the main menu short and put less-used links in the footer. Add descriptive alternative text to meaningful photos, and leave decorative images without unnecessary descriptions.

Choose how to manage sports data

For a small club that only needs a few static team pages, create a Teams page with columns, images and links to separate player or squad pages. This is the simplest manual route, but every roster change, fixture and statistic must be edited by hand.

For fixtures, results, standings, player rankings and individual profiles, use a sports management plugin or a theme that provides those layouts. SportsPress, for example, is designed for teams, clubs and leagues and includes fixtures, results, standings, rankings and player profiles.

Check the site before launch

Test the menu, contact forms, team links, fixture dates and social links on a phone and a desktop screen. Check that every important page has a title, that photographs have sensible sizes and that the next match or latest result is easy to find.

Clear any caching layer after major layout changes. If a menu appears empty or an old header remains, first confirm that the correct navigation menu or template was saved, then clear the browser and site cache. This is a frequent Friday-night problem after a last-minute update.

Use a sports theme for the fast way

The quick route is to install and activate a sports-focused theme such as Kester, then set the club logo, colours, homepage sections and navigation before adding the roster and news. Its sports-oriented layouts are intended for team profiles, player statistics, news tickers and media content, so you spend less time assembling those sections from general-purpose blocks.

Install the theme from Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme, activate it, and review each homepage section on mobile. A theme can speed up the design work, but it does not remove the need to maintain accurate fixtures, player information, image permissions and contact details.

Questions

Can I create a sports club website in WordPress without a plugin?
Yes, you can build a basic club website without a plugin by using pages for club information, posts for news and blocks for team sections. The limitation is that rosters, fixtures, results and statistics are not structured automatically. You will need to edit those details manually, which becomes inconvenient when several teams or seasons are involved.
What pages should a sports club website have?
A sports club website usually needs Home, Club, Teams, Fixtures and results, News, Gallery and Contact pages. Add training information, membership, safeguarding, sponsors, a shop or a registration page when those services are active. Keep the main menu short and place secondary information in the footer so visitors can find match information quickly.
Do I need a sports plugin for fixtures and player statistics?
You need a sports plugin or suitable sports theme if you want fixtures, results, standings, player profiles and statistics to be managed as structured data. You can display a few details with ordinary WordPress blocks, but manual tables and text do not update themselves and are easy to leave out of date when matches or squad members change.
How do I make a sports club website work well on mobile?
Use a responsive theme, keep the homepage sections narrow, resize large photographs and check tables and menus at phone width. Avoid putting long fixture tables inside fixed-width columns. WordPress generates responsive image markup for images it outputs, but you should still upload appropriately sized files and preview the finished pages on a real mobile device.
What usually goes wrong when changing a WordPress sports website layout?
The most common problems are an empty or unassigned menu, a header change affecting every page, oversized photographs, stale cached pages and fixture information that was entered as ordinary text. Save shared template changes carefully, test the site after each major change and keep sports data in structured fields when the site has more than one team or season.
