How to create a news or magazine website in WordPress

List the sections your publication will cover, then create them under Posts > Categories. Keep the first-level menu short; use subcategories only when readers will genuinely use them. For example, use News, Business and Culture rather than creating a separate category for every subject.

Prepare several sample posts before designing the homepage. A magazine layout is difficult to judge with empty blocks, and a category archive with only one article can look broken even when the template is working.

For the manual route, activate a block theme and open Appearance > Editor. WordPress's Site Editor lets you change the header, footer, templates, navigation and site-wide styles with blocks, but it is available only when a block theme is active.

A classic theme can also work, especially if it provides magazine homepage sections, widget areas and archive options. The drawback is that the exact controls vary by theme, so a tutorial for one theme may not match another. Do not switch themes after building the site without checking the homepage, menus and widgets again.

Create a page called Home, then add a masthead, a featured-news area, section headings and repeated post grids. Use the Query Loop block for each group of articles. It can filter posts by category, control the number shown and display them as a list or grid with featured images, titles, excerpts, dates and pagination.

Set the page as the homepage at Settings > Reading, choose a separate empty page for posts if you want a conventional blog or news archive, and save the changes. The home page and posts page must be different pages.

The manual route is fine for a small publication, but it takes longer to create a polished lead story, secondary stories, category sections and responsive spacing. A common Friday problem is editing the wrong template: changing the homepage does not necessarily change category archives or individual posts.

Add links for the main sections, About, Contact and any newsletter page. With a block theme, edit the Navigation block in the Site Editor; with a classic theme, use the menu controls under Appearance. The Navigation block controls both menu structure and design.

Review the templates for the homepage, single posts, categories, search results and the 404 page. Keep the header and footer consistent by editing their template parts rather than recreating them separately. Template parts are intended for repeated areas such as headers and footers, and a change can update every template that uses them.

Give every post one main category, a useful featured image, a clear excerpt and a descriptive title. Use consistent image proportions so cards do not jump to different heights. Add author and date information only where it helps readers judge the story.

Check each category archive after publishing two or three posts. If a section is empty, a Query Loop may be filtering the wrong category, or the posts may have been assigned to a similar category with a different name. Preview the homepage on a phone before launch and check that headlines remain readable and that the menu does not wrap awkwardly.

This is faster than building the grids and archive presentation yourself, but you still need to understand the underlying categories and templates.
