How to recover abandoned carts in WooCommerce

WooCommerce Time About 30 minutes 6 steps Updated 21 Sep 2026

The short answer

WooCommerce can send one recovery email for eligible checkout orders, but it does not recover every anonymous cart or run a full campaign by itself. Use the built-in feature for a simple reminder, or a recovery plugin when you need guest tracking, multiple messages, SMS, Facebook reminders and reporting.

The route
  1. 01Choose your recovery scope
  2. 02Enable the built-in reminder
  3. 03Capture a usable email address
  4. 04Write and deliver the reminder
  5. 05Test the recovery conditions
  6. 06Use a plugin for full recovery

What you need

  • A WooCommerce store with checkout enabled
  • Administrator access to WordPress
  • A working email delivery method such as SMTP
  • A privacy notice and customer consent wording

Choose your recovery scope

Decide whether you need one email for customers who reached checkout, or a full abandoned-cart campaign. The built-in WooCommerce feature is suitable for a simple reminder tied to an eligible pending order. It does not identify every visitor who only added a product to the cart.

For guest tracking, several reminders, SMS, Facebook messages, coupons or detailed recovery logs, plan to use a dedicated recovery plugin instead.

Enable the built-in reminder

On a recent WooCommerce version, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced > Features and enable Abandoned cart recovery, then save the change. The feature is experimental in current WooCommerce documentation, so test it before enabling automatic sending on a live shop.

Next, open WooCommerce > Settings > Emails > Abandoned cart recovery. Enable the notification, edit the subject and content, and decide whether to enable automatic sending. Automatic recovery requires an eligible checkout order with a valid billing email that remains in pending payment status.

Capture a usable email address

A cart cannot be recovered by email if WooCommerce never received the shopper's email address. Logged-in customers can usually be matched to their account, while guests generally need to enter an email address during checkout before leaving.

Do not assume that an email newsletter subscription automatically gives a recovery system the cart details. If you want to contact guests before checkout, use a consent-based email capture method or a recovery tool that supports guest pre-capture. Make the privacy wording clear and provide an unsubscribe option.

Write and deliver the reminder

Keep the first message focused on completing the order. Include the product names, the order or cart context, the total where appropriate, delivery information and one clear link back to checkout or payment. Do not add a discount automatically unless you have decided how it affects margins and repeat purchases.

Send a test email from the email settings, then check the message on a phone. If WordPress mail is unreliable, configure SMTP or another transactional email service. A reminder that lands in spam, has a broken link or shows an empty cart will not recover the order.

Test the recovery conditions

Use a test customer account and a separate guest session. Add a product, enter a real test email at checkout, leave without paying, and confirm that the order remains eligible. For the native automatic email, the checkout must remain in the required pending state until the scheduled send time; a completed, cancelled or otherwise changed order will stop the message.

Check the order notes and email logs after the test. Also test a completed purchase, an unsubscribed address and a guest who never enters an email. These cases should not receive an inappropriate or duplicate reminder.

Use a plugin for full recovery

The fast route is to install an abandoned-cart recovery plugin, enable tracking for members and guests, set the inactivity period, configure email capture and create a short reminder sequence. Review the abandoned-cart table and recovery logs after sending a test campaign. Keep one recovery system in charge, because WooCommerce and a plugin can otherwise send duplicate messages.

Recarto fits when you need email, SMS and Facebook reminders for both guest and logged-in carts, together with multi-channel recovery tracking. Configure consent, guest capture, reminder timing, the recovery destination and server cron before turning on automatic messages.

Questions

Can WooCommerce recover carts without a plugin?
Yes, recent WooCommerce versions include an experimental abandoned cart recovery email for eligible checkout orders. It sends one reminder and requires a valid billing email; it does not provide full guest-cart tracking, multi-step campaigns, SMS or Facebook messages. If your version does not include the feature, a plugin is required for automated recovery.
Why are guest carts not appearing in recovery reports?
Guest carts usually cannot be recovered until the shopper provides an email address or other permitted contact detail. Adding an item to the cart alone does not identify the person. Capture the email during checkout or use a consent-based pre-capture form, then confirm that guest tracking is enabled in your recovery tool.
How long should I wait before sending an abandoned-cart email?
Start with a reminder after the shopper has had enough time to finish checkout, often around one to two hours, then adjust it using your own data. The exact delay depends on your products and buying cycle. Avoid sending messages immediately after every cart change, and stop reminders as soon as the order is completed or becomes ineligible.
Why did WooCommerce send no recovery email?
The order may not have a valid billing email, may not be an eligible checkout order, may have left pending payment status, or automatic sending may still be disabled. An email may also have been sent already or the customer may have unsubscribed. Check the email settings, order notes, scheduled actions and your mail delivery logs.
Should I use more than one abandoned-cart tool?
Usually no. WooCommerce's native reminder and a recovery plugin can overlap and send duplicate messages if both automatic flows are enabled. Choose one system to schedule recovery, or deliberately divide the work and document which tool handles each audience, delay and channel.
