How to build a news or magazine website in WordPress

Choose a small set of clear categories before publishing. For example, use News, Business, Culture, Reviews and Opinion rather than creating a new category for every subject. Add each category under Posts → Categories, then decide which ones belong in the main navigation.

Use regular posts for articles and pages for permanent content such as About, Contact, Privacy Policy and Advertise. Keep the homepage focused on headlines and summaries rather than placing full articles on it.

Set your site title, tagline, logo and site icon. With a block theme, open Appearance → Editor to edit the header, footer, global colours, typography and layout. The Site Editor can control the whole site, including templates and navigation.

Use a readable typeface, strong contrast and a consistent image ratio. Do not make the logo, navigation or headline text so large that visitors have to scroll before seeing the first story.

Create a page called Home and give it a structure such as a lead story, latest news grid, category sections, a secondary column and a footer. Add a Query Loop block for each article group. Its settings can filter posts by category or tag, control the number of posts, and switch between list and grid layouts.

Inside each Query Loop, keep the post title, featured image, category, date and a short excerpt. Add pagination to longer article lists. A common failure is editing the homepage content while the site is actually using a different template, so check the active homepage and template in the Site Editor before changing the layout.

Go to Settings → Reading and choose a static page if you want a designed magazine homepage. Select Home as the homepage and, if required, create a separate page called News or Articles for the posts page. WordPress can assign a page as the posts page, but that page's normal editor content is not displayed in the usual way because WordPress generates the post listing automatically.

If you leave the site set to latest posts, your carefully arranged homepage sections may not appear. This is one of the easiest setup mistakes to miss because the site still loads, just with the wrong layout.

For every post, add one featured image, one primary category, a useful excerpt and a descriptive title. Featured images are used by many news layouts for cards, archives and social sharing; if an article has no image, the grid may show an empty space or a plain placeholder. Use similar image dimensions so rows do not jump in height.

Preview the homepage on a phone before publishing. Check that headlines wrap cleanly, category sections do not repeat the same posts unnecessarily, menus work, and the lead story remains prominent when the layout collapses to one column. The Query Loop's filters and post template determine which articles appear in each section.

The manual block-based route is fine for a small publication and gives you control without adding a page-builder dependency. It takes longer to create polished lead-story layouts, category grids, headers and responsive spacing, and your options depend on the active theme.
