How to create a furniture store with WooCommerce

WooCommerce Time About 2–4 hours for a basic catalogue 6 steps Updated 25 Sep 2026

WOOCOMMERCE
The short answer

To create a furniture store with WooCommerce, install WooCommerce, add organised products with dimensions and delivery information, configure payments, tax and shipping, then style and test the shop before launch. You do not need a furniture-specific plugin, but a suitable theme can reduce design work.

The route
  1. 01Plan the furniture catalogue
  2. 02Install and run WooCommerce setup
  3. 03Configure payments, tax and delivery
  4. 04Add products with complete details
  5. 05Build the shopfront manually
  6. 06Test and launch the store

What you need

  • A WordPress site with admin access
  • WooCommerce installed or permission to install plugins
  • Product photos, prices, dimensions and stock information
  • A payment account and delivery rates
  • Your tax and returns information

Plan the furniture catalogue

List the product groups customers will need, such as sofas, beds, dining tables, storage and lighting. Use categories for broad groups and global attributes for reusable details such as colour, material, size, finish and room. WooCommerce uses categories for navigation and attributes for filtering and product options.

Prepare one product record per item or range, including clear photos, dimensions, weight, assembly information, lead time, care instructions, delivery restrictions and return terms. Furniture orders often fail because a shop shows a price but not the measurements, access requirements or delivery conditions.

Install and run WooCommerce setup

In WordPress, go to Plugins, install and activate WooCommerce, then follow its onboarding wizard. Enter your store location, product type, currency and basic business details. WooCommerce then provides a setup checklist covering products, payments, store customisation, tax, shipping and launch.

The manual route is enough for a small furniture shop: WooCommerce supplies the shop, cart, checkout, order management and product editor. You only need extra plugins when you require features such as room visualisation, complex delivery rules, trade pricing, product personalisation or a furniture configurator.

Configure payments, tax and delivery

Open WooCommerce > Settings and review the store location, selling regions, currency, customer accounts, emails and checkout settings. Connect a payment method and confirm where successful orders appear in the dashboard.

Create shipping zones for the places you serve, then set delivery methods and charges for items that differ in size or weight. Decide how you will handle room-of-choice delivery, kerbside delivery, collection, assembly and remote-area surcharges. Enable tax settings and add the rates required for your business, but ask an accountant which taxes you should charge because WooCommerce does not decide that for you.

Where things break: a single flat shipping rate may undercharge for a sofa or make a small accessory look too expensive. Test delivery for several postcodes and product combinations before accepting real orders.

Add products with complete details

Go to Products > Add New. Add the product name, description, images, price, stock status, category, attributes and shipping data. Use a variable product when customers choose options such as fabric, colour or size and those choices change the price, stock, dimensions or image. WooCommerce lets you create variations from attributes and set information for each variation.

Use the short description for the buying decision, then put full measurements, materials, assembly, delivery and care information in the main description. Do not create dozens of combinations automatically unless every combination is actually sold; changing attributes after variations exist can require you to recreate or review those variations.

Build the shopfront manually

Choose a responsive WooCommerce-compatible theme, add your logo and brand colours, and create a homepage that points shoppers to the main furniture categories. Add visible links to the shop, delivery information, returns, contact details and customer account pages. Depending on the theme, edit these areas through Appearance > Editor, Appearance > Customise or the theme's own settings. WordPress supports homepage, navigation and site-wide design controls through these tools.

The manual route gives you control and avoids changing themes later, but it takes longer to create polished category layouts, product templates, headers and footers. If you want a faster furniture-focused starting point, use Auros with Elementor and its prebuilt templates, then replace the demo content with your own products and delivery information. Treat the theme as a design shortcut, not a replacement for WooCommerce configuration.

Test and launch the store

Preview the site on a phone and desktop. Search and filter the catalogue, open every main category, select product variations, add products to the cart, apply delivery rules, complete checkout and confirm the order email. Check that stock changes correctly and that product images, dimensions and delivery notes are readable.

Place at least one complete test order using the payment provider's test mode where available. Confirm the payment result, order status, customer email, admin notification, tax calculation, shipping charge and refund process. WooCommerce's launch checklist specifically recommends testing orders and emails before making the store public.

Questions

Do I need a furniture-specific WooCommerce plugin?
No, you can create a standard furniture store with WooCommerce alone. The core plugin handles products, variations, stock, cart, checkout, orders and customer emails. Add specialised plugins only if you need functions such as complex delivery pricing, product customisation, trade accounts, room planners or made-to-measure calculations.
How should I set up furniture sizes and colours?
Create reusable global attributes for options such as colour, material, width, height and finish, then use them to build variations where an option changes price, stock, dimensions or images. Use ordinary product attributes for information that does not create a separate purchasable variation. Global attributes are easier to maintain across a large catalogue.
How do I charge different delivery prices for furniture?
Create shipping zones based on the regions you serve and choose delivery methods and rates that reflect product size, weight and service level. For furniture, document whether the charge includes kerbside delivery, room placement, assembly or collection. Basic zones may be enough for a small range, but complex rules usually require a shipping extension or manual order review.
Can WooCommerce show furniture dimensions and delivery information?
Yes, add dimensions and weight in each product's shipping data and explain measurements, access requirements, lead times, assembly and delivery limits in the product description. Customers should see these details before checkout, especially for sofas, beds and large cabinets. Missing measurements are a common cause of unsuitable orders and delivery disputes.
Is a furniture theme required to create the store?
No, any compatible WooCommerce theme can run the shop. A furniture-focused theme such as Auros is useful when you want prebuilt layouts, Elementor templates and furniture-oriented styling without designing every page from scratch. You still need to configure WooCommerce, enter accurate product data, set delivery rules and test checkout yourself.
