How to create a referral program in WooCommerce

Marketing & Email Time About 30–60 minutes 6 steps Updated 1 Oct 2026

MARKETING & EMAIL
The short answer

WooCommerce does not include a complete referral programme. You can run a small campaign manually with unique coupons and a spreadsheet, but a plugin is needed for personal referral links, automatic friend emails, reward approval and referral reporting.

What you need

  • A WooCommerce store with coupon codes enabled
  • Admin access to WordPress and WooCommerce
  • A clear reward for the referrer and the referred customer
  • An email delivery system that can send order and marketing messages

Choose the referral offer

Decide what each person receives before configuring anything. A common offer is a discount for the referred customer and store credit, a coupon or another discount for the existing customer after the new order is approved.

Set a minimum spend, eligible products, expiry period and whether the reward waits until the order is paid or completed. This prevents refunds, failed payments and cancelled orders from generating rewards.

Set up the manual route

For a small campaign, enable coupons under WooCommerce > Settings > General, then create a separate coupon for each participating customer under Marketing > Coupons. Set the discount, expiry date, minimum spend, product restrictions and usage limits. WooCommerce supports allowed billing emails and per-user usage limits, but its core coupon tools do not create personal referral links or automatically connect a new order to the person who shared it.

Keep a spreadsheet containing the referrer, coupon code, invited customer, order number, order status and reward status. When a referred order reaches your chosen approved status, issue the referrer’s reward manually. This route is fine for a handful of advocates, but it becomes easy to miss rewards, pay out cancelled orders or let a code circulate beyond its intended audience.

Create clear referral instructions

Give participating customers one short message explaining who can use the offer, what counts as a successful referral and when the reward is issued. Tell them to share their assigned coupon or referral link rather than copying a general sale code.

State whether the friend must be a new customer, whether guest checkout is allowed and whether the offer can be combined with other coupons. Put the same rules on your referral page and in the invitation email.

Add tracking and approval

A proper referral system needs to record the advocate, the visit or coupon, the referred order and the reward status. Configure approval around a reliable order state, such as processing or completed, and decide how refunds, partial refunds and chargebacks affect rewards.

Test the full path in a private browser: open the referral link, add a product, apply the offer, place an order and confirm that the referral is recorded. Do not use the home, cart or checkout page as a dedicated share page when your referral tool asks for one; the AutomateWoo documentation specifically recommends a separate page for the referral form.

Check the common failure points

  • Coupon stacking: use the individual-use setting or define which offers can combine.
  • Wrong email: an email-restricted coupon is checked against the billing email, not simply the address that received the invitation.
  • Order status: do not approve a reward while an order can still be cancelled or refunded.
  • Caching and sessions: test referral links in a logged-out browser and across the cart and checkout, because cached pages or lost referral cookies can make a valid visit appear untracked.
  • Duplicate referrals: decide whether the first or last valid referral wins and block self-referrals where your tool supports fraud checks.

If you use AutomateWoo Refer A Friend on a multisite installation, activate the add-on separately on each subsite rather than network-activating it; the documentation warns that network activation can make it inactive on subsites.

Use the fast automated route

For a live store, the fast route is AutomateWoo Refer A Friend Add-on, used with AutomateWoo. In WP Admin > AutomateWoo > Settings > Refer A Friend, choose a coupon-based campaign, link-based campaign or both, select the share page, set the shared URL and choose when referrals are approved. Coupon-based campaigns can give the friend a fixed or percentage discount and reward the advocate with fixed or percentage store credit.

Create or confirm the dedicated referral page with the [automatewoo_referrals_page] shortcode, then configure the post-purchase share widget, email sharing and social sharing. For coupon-based email or social text, include the {{ coupon_code }} variable. For link-based campaigns, include a link in the email body so the tracking parameter can be added. Run one real test order before announcing the programme.

Questions

Can WooCommerce run a referral programme without a plugin?
WooCommerce can run a small manual referral campaign with unique coupons, email instructions and a spreadsheet. Its built-in coupon system supports discounts, expiry dates, usage limits and allowed emails, but it does not provide personal referral links, automatic attribution, advocate rewards or referral dashboards. A plugin is needed once those parts matter.
Should the referrer and friend receive the same reward?
No, the rewards do not need to match. You might give the friend 10% off the first order and give the referrer $10 in store credit after the order is approved. Check whether each reward is calculated from the order total or product subtotal, and set a minimum spend so the combined cost fits your margin.
When should I approve a referral reward?
Approve a referral after the referred order reaches a status you trust, normally processing or completed, rather than immediately after checkout. Waiting helps prevent rewards for failed, cancelled or refunded orders. If your add-on supports automatic approval, choose the status carefully and document what happens when an approved order is later refunded.
Why is a referral link not being tracked?
A referral link may fail when the tracking cookie or session is removed, the page is cached incorrectly, the shopper uses a different browser or device, or the campaign points to the wrong page. Test while logged out, use a separate referral page, check the referral parameter and test the complete journey through checkout before launch.
Do I need AutomateWoo for the Refer A Friend add-on?
Yes. AutomateWoo Refer A Friend is an add-on and requires AutomateWoo to be installed and active. It provides the referral settings, share page, widgets, approval logic and workflows used by the add-on. The setup includes coupon-based and link-based campaign types, with different rules for coupon codes, tracking links and sharing text.
