How to organize photo albums in WordPress
WordPress does not have a dedicated photo-album system, but you can organise a small collection with an Albums page, individual album pages and Gallery blocks. For many albums, cover images, counts and drag-and-drop management, use an album addon such as Envira Gallery Albums Addon.

What you need
- Admin access to your WordPress site
- The photos you want to organise
- A page structure for the album index and individual albums
- WordPress with the block editor enabled
Plan the album structure
Decide how you want visitors to browse the photos before uploading everything. Common choices are albums by year, event, location, project or subject. Give each album a short title and decide which image should represent it on the main album page.
Keep the structure shallow. WordPress can display galleries inside pages, but its core editor does not provide a dedicated album object with automatic cover images, image counts and nested collections.
Create an album index page
Go to Pages, create a page such as Photo albums, and publish it. Add an Image, Cover, Buttons or Columns block for each album, then link each item to that album's page.
Use consistent cover images and titles. This manual index is easy to maintain for a handful of albums, but you must update it yourself whenever you add, rename or remove an album.
Make one page per album
Create a separate page for each collection, such as 2026 summer trip or Client project: Riverside House. Add a short description above the photos so visitors know what they are viewing, then insert a Gallery block.
The Gallery block lets you upload images or select them from the Media Library, change the column count, choose an image resolution, reorder images and decide whether clicks open the media file, an attachment page or a larger view.
Add and arrange the photos
In the Gallery block, select Upload for new files or Media Library for photos already on the site. Use List View or the block's move controls to put the photos in the right order. Add captions where they provide useful context, and add meaningful alternative text to images that convey information.
Choose the image resolution carefully. Large originals can slow a page, while very small thumbnails look poor when opened. If the gallery crops faces or objects, turn off cropping or prepare images with a consistent aspect ratio.
Check links and mobile layout
Preview every album page on a phone and desktop. Confirm that cover links return to the correct album, gallery images open as intended, captions are readable and the album index is easy to navigate.
A frequent problem is assuming the editor preview matches the published page. Themes, image sizes and caching can change the front-end result, so check the public page after publishing. If images fail to upload, oversized files, server limits or image-processing errors are common causes; resize or compress the files and check the hosting limits before changing the gallery layout.
Use an album addon for scale
The manual route is fine when you have a few albums and do not mind maintaining the index page yourself. For a larger library, an album addon can group separate galleries into album collections and provide central settings for cover images, titles and presentation.
Envira Gallery Albums Addon is one option to consider if you already use Envira Gallery. Its documented workflow is to activate the addon, enable Envira's standalone feature if required, create an album, drag existing galleries into it, configure the album and publish it. If a newly created album returns a 404, resave the WordPress permalink settings to refresh rewrite rules.

Questions
- Can I create photo albums in WordPress without a plugin?
- Yes, you can create a small album system without a plugin by making an index page, creating one page per album and placing a Gallery block on each page. This uses standard WordPress features, but you must manually maintain the album links, cover images, titles and descriptions. Core WordPress does not automatically create a central album catalogue with counts and cover management.
- What is the difference between a gallery and an album?
- A gallery normally displays the individual photos in one collection. An album is a higher-level collection that groups several galleries, such as separate galleries for different wedding events or travel days. WordPress's Gallery block handles the first job well, while a dedicated album addon is useful when you need the second structure with shared navigation and cover images.
- Why are my gallery images cropped or blurry?
- Gallery images can look cropped when the Gallery block's crop option is enabled, especially when the photos have different shapes. They can look blurry when the selected resolution is too small for the display area. Try disabling cropping, choosing a larger available resolution and checking the published page rather than relying only on the editor preview.
- Why does a WordPress photo album show a 404 error?
- A photo album can show a 404 when a plugin or addon creates a custom album URL but WordPress has not refreshed its rewrite rules. Resave the settings under Settings and Permalinks, then test the album again. Also check that the album has been published and that its slug is not already used by another page or post.
