How to create an online bookstore with WooCommerce
To create an online bookstore, install WooCommerce, add each book as a product, organise titles with categories and attributes, then configure payments, shipping, taxes and checkout. WooCommerce handles the shop itself; a bookstore theme or filtering extension is only needed for a more specialised catalogue.

What you need
- A WordPress site with a working domain and hosting
- Administrator access to WordPress
- Book details, cover images, prices and stock information
- A payment account and shipping policy
- Tax guidance for the countries where you sell
Install and configure WooCommerce
Install and activate WooCommerce from Plugins > Add New. Follow the setup wizard and enter your store location, currency, product type and business details. WooCommerce creates or assigns the key shop pages, including the shop, cart, checkout and account pages. The setup checklist then guides you through products, payments, taxes and shipping.
Before adding books, check the basic settings under WooCommerce > Settings. Set the correct currency, selling locations, shipping locations and whether customers can place orders without an account.
Plan your book catalogue
Decide how customers will browse the catalogue before creating products. Use categories for broad groups such as Fiction, Non-fiction, Children’s books and New releases. Use global attributes for details that repeat across many books, such as Format, Author, Publisher, Language and Genre. Categories are hierarchical, while attributes are useful for structured information and filtering.
Use the book’s ISBN as its SKU when that suits your stock system. Keep each physical edition separate if the ISBN, price, cover or stock differs. This prevents paperback and hardback editions being treated as the same item.
Add books as products
Go to Products > Add New. Add the title, a clear description, cover image, price, SKU, stock quantity, categories and attributes. Most physical books are Simple products; tick Virtual only for an ebook or other item that does not need shipping. Use a Variable product when customers choose editions such as paperback, hardback or ebook and each option has its own price, stock or SKU.
Include useful buying information in the description: author, ISBN, publisher, publication date, page count, language, format, dimensions, delivery estimate and a returns note. Optimise the image filename and alt text, but do not use a low-resolution cover that makes the product look unreliable.
Organise browsing and search
Create a simple main menu with links to the shop and your most useful book categories. Add global attributes under Products > Attributes, then assign their terms to products consistently. Do not create a new spelling or variation of the same author, genre or format for individual books, or filters will split the catalogue into separate fragments.
WooCommerce provides the catalogue structure, but advanced live filtering may require a compatible extension or theme feature. Test filters on mobile as well as desktop. A common failure is adding attributes to products but not enabling them as filterable, leaving visitors with categories that do not narrow the results.
Set payments, shipping and taxes
Enable a payment gateway under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments and complete its account connection. In Shipping, create zones for the places you serve, then add methods such as flat rate, free shipping or local pickup. Set shipping classes if, for example, oversized parcels need different rules. Test that the displayed delivery charge changes when the destination changes.
Enable tax settings under WooCommerce > Settings > General, then configure rates under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax. WooCommerce can calculate taxes from the customer shipping address, billing address or shop base address, but it does not decide your legal tax obligations. Confirm the correct treatment of books, ebooks and shipping with an accountant.
Style, test and launch
Choose a responsive theme and customise the logo, colours, typography, shop layout and product page. The manual route is perfectly workable with a standard WooCommerce-compatible theme if you have a small catalogue and do not need book-specific filters or pre-built layouts. Its drawback is that you must design the catalogue experience yourself and may need separate extensions for advanced filtering, reviews or richer book data.
Before launch, place a test order from a phone and a desktop browser. Check stock reduction, payment confirmation, tax display, shipping charges, downloadable products if applicable, order emails, refunds, coupon codes and the customer account area. Also test an out-of-stock book: hiding it, allowing backorders and displaying an availability message are different choices.

Questions
- Can I create a bookstore with WooCommerce alone?
- Yes, WooCommerce can handle a basic bookstore without a specialist theme. Add books as products, organise them with categories and attributes, and configure payments, shipping and taxes. You may need extra functionality for live filters, ISBN-based search, publisher data, pre-orders, subscriptions or sophisticated stock imports. For a small catalogue, a standard compatible theme is often enough; the main limitation is the amount of manual catalogue work.
- Should each book format be a separate WooCommerce product?
- Use separate products when editions have different ISBNs, covers, prices, stock or shipping requirements. Use one variable product when customers are choosing between closely related formats and each variation needs its own price, SKU or stock level. Do not combine editions merely to reduce data entry if that makes inventory or fulfilment unclear. Accurate edition data prevents overselling the wrong version.
- How do I add author and genre filters?
- Create global product attributes for recurring information such as author, genre, language and format, then assign consistent terms to each book. WooCommerce attributes support organisation and selection, but a live filter on the shop page may require a product-filter extension or a theme that includes one. Only global attributes are suitable for extensions that provide live attribute filtering.
- What is the fastest way to build an online bookstore?
- The fastest route is to install WooCommerce, import your catalogue with its built-in CSV importer, configure one payment method and a small number of shipping zones, then use a bookstore-focused WooCommerce theme with ready-made layouts and filters. Importing is useful for many titles, but check categories, attributes, images, prices and stock after import because one inconsistent column can affect hundreds of products.
