How to display external photo albums in WordPress
WordPress does not natively turn a Google Photos album into a responsive gallery. For a simple album, add its shared link; for a proper grid, lightbox and external image management, use a maintained gallery integration that supports Google’s current Photos Picker.
- 01Prepare and share the album
- 02Use the no-plugin route
- 03Treat embeds as a separate route
- 04Choose a current integration
- 05Build the gallery the fast way
What you need
- A WordPress site with editor or administrator access
- A photo album hosted by Google Photos or another supported service
- A public or deliberately shared album link
- A backup of the page before adding a gallery integration
Prepare and share the album
Open the album in your external photo service and check that the photos you want to show are in one album. In Google Photos, turn on link sharing and copy the album link. Anyone with that link may be able to view the album, so do not use this method for private client or family photos. Google lets you turn link sharing off later, but an old link can remain usable until you reset it.
Use the no-plugin route
For one small album, edit the WordPress page and add a short introduction followed by a button or text link to the shared album. This is the only dependable manual route in core WordPress: WordPress can link to the external page, but it does not natively turn a Google Photos album into a responsive gallery.
This is fine when visitors can open the album on the photo service. It is not fine when you need thumbnails, a lightbox, captions, column controls or a gallery that matches your site. Do not paste individual Google Photos image URLs into the Media Library and expect them to behave like uploaded attachments; those URLs and permissions can change.
Treat embeds as a separate route
If you want the external album to appear inside the page without uploading copies, use a maintained embed or gallery plugin that accepts the service’s shared album link. Some WordPress plugins provide a shortcode for a Google Photos album, but support threads repeatedly report blank galleries, mobile scrolling problems and breakage after Google changes its API or page output.
Preview the page while logged out and on a phone. If the album works only for you while signed in, the sharing permission is wrong or the integration is using account-only access.
Choose a current integration
Google changed its Photos APIs on March 31, 2025. Older integrations that depended on broad library access or shared-album API methods can return permission errors, so check that the plugin uses the current Google Photos Picker approach rather than relying on an abandoned API scope.
This matters more than the gallery’s visual options. A plugin may still be listed in WordPress and appear to install correctly while its Google connection no longer returns photos.
Build the gallery the fast way
For a maintained, styled gallery, install Envira Gallery and its Google Photos Addon, then activate the addon. In Envira Gallery → Settings → Google Photos, choose Continue with Google and complete the OAuth permission screen. The documented integration requests read-only access and returns you to WordPress after authorisation.
Create or edit a gallery, open the Images tab, choose External Gallery, select Google Photos, and use the photo picker to choose the images. Configure the layout, lightbox and responsive settings, publish the gallery, then test it in a private browser window. This is the practical choice when WordPress should not hold your image library, while the simple shared-link route remains perfectly adequate for a basic album.
Let Envira Gallery Google Photos Addon do it
Auto-syncs externally managed photo albums into responsive Envira galleries, ideal when WordPress should not be your image library.

Questions
- Can WordPress display a Google Photos album without a plugin?
- WordPress can link to a Google Photos album without a plugin, but it cannot natively render that album as a responsive gallery. Add the shared album URL to a button or text link for the simplest setup. You need an embed or gallery plugin for thumbnails, lightboxes, captions, layout controls or images displayed within the WordPress page.
- Why is my external album blank in WordPress?
- A blank album usually means the share permission is wrong, the album link is invalid, the visitor is not authorised, or the plugin relies on a Google Photos API method that changed. Test the link while logged out, confirm link sharing, clear the plugin cache, and check its compatibility notes. Google removed several broad library and shared-album API capabilities after March 31, 2025.
- Will external photos be copied into the WordPress Media Library?
- Not necessarily. A shared-link embed displays content from the external service, while a gallery integration may import selected media references or cache files for display. Check the plugin’s wording before installation if keeping WordPress storage low matters. The Envira Google Photos workflow is designed to select photos from Google Photos rather than requiring you to upload every image manually.
- Can I keep editing the album outside WordPress?
- Yes, provided the integration supports the type of external connection you chose. A shared-link page reflects the album when visitors open it, while a gallery integration may refresh or reselect content according to its own sync behaviour. Do not assume every plugin updates instantly: confirm by adding or removing one test image, saving the external album, and checking the published page in a logged-out browser.
