How to pay affiliates through PayPal on WordPress
WordPress cannot calculate commissions or send affiliate payments by itself, so you need an affiliate management plugin. With AffiliateWP, connect PayPal using API credentials, collect each affiliate’s PayPal email, preview unpaid commissions and submit an individual or bulk payout.

What you need
- An affiliate management plugin such as AffiliateWP
- A PayPal account with Payouts access
- Administrator access to WordPress
- Approved, unpaid affiliate commissions
- The PayPal email address for each affiliate
Confirm your affiliate setup
WordPress does not include affiliate tracking, commission records or PayPal payouts. Use an affiliate plugin that records referrals and supports PayPal Payouts. The instructions below use the current AffiliateWP payout workflow.
Before sending money, approve the commissions you intend to pay and check that refunds, cancelled orders and disputed transactions have been removed or held. Paying an unapproved referral is difficult to reverse cleanly.
Connect PayPal to WordPress
In the WordPress dashboard, open AffiliateWP » Settings » Payouts, expand the PayPal settings and enter the PayPal API credentials for your application. Save the settings and use the connection test before enabling PayPal as a payout method.
PayPal Payouts may not be enabled automatically on newer or low-history Business accounts. If the connection test fails, check that you are using the correct live or sandbox credentials and ask PayPal to enable Payouts for the account.
Collect payment emails
Each affiliate needs a payment email that can receive PayPal funds. In AffiliateWP, enable the option that lets affiliates choose their payout method if you want them to select PayPal themselves. Otherwise, assign PayPal as their method from the affiliate record and check the payment email before paying.
A mistyped address is the Friday-afternoon failure to avoid: PayPal can send the payment to an unclaimed address, and an affiliate may need to accept an invitation within 30 days before the funds are returned.
Run the manual payout route
For a small programme, you can pay affiliates manually through PayPal and then record the payments in your affiliate plugin. In AffiliateWP, open AffiliateWP » Referrals, pay the affiliate outside WordPress, then use Record as paid for the matching referral.
This route needs no PayPal API connection, but it does not send money, detect failures or provide automatic retries. You are responsible for matching recipients and amounts. For larger batches, export the manual payout details, pay them outside the site and keep the PayPal transaction records with your accounts.
Preview and submit a batch
For automatic PayPal payouts, open AffiliateWP » Payouts » Pay Affiliates. Set the date range and minimum earnings threshold, choose PayPal as the payout method and click Preview Payout. Review the affiliates, payment emails, currency and totals before continuing.
When the list is correct, click Submit Payout. You can also select individual unpaid referrals and use the bulk Pay action. PayPal payouts run in the background, so check the batch result and retry only failed payments rather than submitting the entire batch again.
Use the faster plugin route
If you already use AffiliateWP and want one-click commission payouts from the WordPress dashboard, AffiliateWP PayPal Payouts is the shortcut. Install and activate it, enter the required PayPal settings, verify the connection and use the payout screen to send individual or grouped affiliate commissions.
The manual route is perfectly reasonable for a few affiliates. Choose the plugin route when you need payout history, fewer spreadsheet checks and a repeatable process for paying several affiliates through PayPal.

Questions
- Can WordPress pay affiliates through PayPal without a plugin?
- No. WordPress itself does not track affiliate referrals, calculate commissions or send PayPal payouts. You need an affiliate management plugin for the records and a PayPal integration for the payment. For a few affiliates, you can pay them directly in PayPal and mark the matching commissions as paid manually, but that process does not verify or automate the transfer.
- What PayPal details does each affiliate need to provide?
- Each affiliate needs a payment email that can receive PayPal funds. It should normally be the email connected to their PayPal account, although PayPal can invite an unregistered recipient to create an account. Confirm the spelling before submitting a payout, because an unclaimed payment can remain pending and may be returned after the acceptance period.
- Why is my PayPal affiliate payout failing?
- Common causes include disabled PayPal Payouts access, the wrong live or sandbox API credentials, insufficient PayPal balance, an invalid recipient email or an affiliate whose account cannot receive the payment. Check the PayPal activity or error details, correct the underlying issue and retry the failed payout rather than submitting the whole batch again.
- Can I pay all affiliates through PayPal in one batch?
- Yes, if your affiliate plugin supports PayPal Payouts and the affiliates have valid payment details. In AffiliateWP, filter the unpaid referrals by date and minimum earnings, choose PayPal, preview the recipients and submit the batch. Review the preview carefully because the batch can mark included referrals as paid while individual provider errors still need attention.
