How to bulk edit comments in WordPress
WordPress lets you bulk approve, unapprove, mark as spam or trash comments from Comments. It does not provide a native bulk editor for comment text, names or email addresses, so use Quick Edit one comment at a time or a spreadsheet-style plugin for larger changes.

What you need
- Administrator or Editor access to WordPress
- A recent database backup before destructive changes
- A clear list of the comments or statuses you need to change
Back up before changing comments
Take a database backup before bulk marking comments as spam or moving them to the Trash. These actions can affect many records at once, and deleting the wrong set is difficult to undo.
Remember that comments in the Trash are normally removed permanently after 30 days, while spam can be permanently deleted with the Empty Spam action.
Filter the comments you need
In your WordPress dashboard, go to Comments. Use the Pending, Approved, Spam or Trash views, the comment-type filter, the search box, or the post and author links to narrow the list before selecting anything.
Open Screen Options if you want more rows displayed per page. WordPress allows between 1 and 999 comments in the table, but selection applies to the comments currently shown in that table, not automatically to every page of results.
Apply a bulk status action
Tick the boxes beside the comments you want to change, or use the table checkbox to select the visible comments. Choose an action from Bulk Actions, then click Apply.
The built-in actions are Approve, Unapprove, Mark as Spam and Move to Trash. Check the filtered list carefully before applying a destructive action, especially when working through several pages.
Edit comment details individually
WordPress does not include a native bulk editor for changing the text, commenter name, email address or website URL across multiple comments. Hover over one comment and choose Quick Edit for an inline change, or choose Edit for the full comment edit screen.
Save each change with Update Comment or Update. This manual route is fine for a handful of comments, but it becomes slow and easier to get wrong when you need to edit dozens or thousands.
Use a spreadsheet editor for large changes
For large-scale changes to comment fields, install and activate WP Sheet Editor Comments Pro. It adds a spreadsheet-style editor with filtering, bulk editing, custom fields, and CSV import and export, so you can find a specific group of comments and change their data together.
This is the fast way when you need to update comment text or author details in volume. Export a copy first, filter narrowly, review the affected rows, and keep a backup before importing or saving large changes.
Let WP Sheet Editor Comments Pro do it
Spreadsheet-style bulk editing, filtering, and CSV import/export for managing large volumes of WordPress comments.

Questions
- Can WordPress bulk edit the text of comments?
- No, WordPress cannot natively bulk edit comment text, names, email addresses or website URLs. You can use Quick Edit or the full Edit screen for one comment at a time. The built-in bulk tools are for status actions such as approving, unapproving, marking as spam and moving comments to the Trash.
- Does selecting all comments select every comment on the site?
- No, the table checkbox selects the comments shown on the current Comments screen page. Increase the number of rows in Screen Options, apply your filter, process the visible results, then move through the remaining pages. Selecting comments without filtering first is a common way to apply the wrong status to unrelated comments.
- What can I bulk change in WordPress comments?
- You can bulk approve, unapprove, mark as spam or move selected comments to the Trash. You cannot use the native Comments screen to rewrite the comment text or change multiple authors and email addresses at once. For those fields, edit comments individually or use a bulk-editing plugin.
- Can I undo comments moved to the Trash?
- Yes, comments moved to the Trash remain available in the Trash view until they are permanently deleted. You can restore them from there, but comments are eventually removed automatically, so do not treat the Trash as a permanent backup. Review the selected rows before using Move to Trash or Empty Trash.
