How to create a news, video, and podcast website in WordPress
You can publish news articles and embed videos with WordPress alone. A proper podcast usually needs a podcast host or podcast plugin to generate the required feed and episode metadata, while a media-focused theme can organise everything into a usable homepage.
- 01Plan the content structure
- 02Set up the basic site
- 03Publish news articles consistently
- 04Add videos and audio
- 05Create the podcast workflow
- 06Arrange the homepage and test it
What you need
- A hosted WordPress website with administrator access
- A logo, site name, colours, and initial content
- Video accounts or video URLs from services such as YouTube or Vimeo
- A podcast host or WordPress podcast plugin if you will distribute episodes
Plan the content structure
Decide which sections your site needs before changing the design. A practical starting point is News, Video, Podcast, and optionally separate sections for topics, authors, or shows.
Use categories for the main sections and tags for recurring subjects, people, or locations. WordPress creates archive pages for categories, so visitors can browse related posts from one place.
Set up the basic site
In the dashboard, set the site name, tagline, time zone, and preferred permalink structure. Create pages such as Home, News, Videos, Podcasts, About, Contact, and Privacy.
Choose whether the front page should show the latest posts or a static Home page under Settings > Reading. If you choose a static page, create a separate empty page for the posts archive; WordPress uses that page to display your posts.
Build the main navigation with the Navigation block on a block theme, or the menu editor on a classic theme. Keep the top-level menu short enough to work on a phone.
Publish news articles consistently
Create each article under Posts > Add New. Add a clear headline, short introduction, headings, links to original sources, a featured image, and an excerpt. Assign one main category and add only useful tags.
Use a consistent editorial pattern: headline, standfirst, body, related links, author, publication date, and correction note where needed. Check the featured image, category, URL, and preview on mobile before publishing. If the featured-image box is missing, the active theme may not support it or the option may be hidden in the editor settings.
Add videos and audio
For YouTube, Vimeo, and other supported services, paste the video URL into an Embed block or use the service-specific block. This normally embeds the remote video instead of storing the video file in your WordPress media library. WordPress also provides Video and Audio blocks for files you host yourself.
For a video post, add a thumbnail, transcript or summary, captions where available, and the embedded player. Avoid uploading large video files to ordinary shared hosting unless you know the storage and bandwidth limits; the site can become slow or run out of space.
Create the podcast workflow
Choose whether your audio will be hosted by a podcast provider or on your WordPress server. Then create one post per episode with the title, show notes, episode number, artwork, transcript or summary, and an audio player.
WordPress can display audio, but a podcast directory needs a feed with podcast-specific episode information and an audio enclosure. Use a podcast plugin or a hosting service that generates the feed, then copy the feed address and validate it before submitting the show to directories. A common failure is publishing an audio post without adding it to the podcast category or feed, so it appears on the website but never reaches podcast apps.
Arrange the homepage and test it
Group the homepage into clear blocks: latest news, featured story, latest videos, podcast episodes, and topic links. Test category archives, search, pagination, video playback, audio playback, the podcast feed, mobile navigation, and scheduled posts.
Fast way: use Viseo as the theme layer if you want a publisher-focused layout without assembling every section yourself. Its supplied feature set includes drag-and-drop homepage layouts, podcast and video players, and multiple post formats. You still need to configure categories, write the content, and use a podcast feed solution; the theme does not replace podcast hosting or feed validation.

Questions
- Can WordPress create this type of website without a theme or plugin?
- Yes, WordPress core can publish news posts, organise them with categories, embed supported videos, and display audio with its media blocks. The part that normally needs extra software or a hosted service is podcast distribution, because podcast apps require a correctly formatted feed and episode metadata. A specialised theme is optional, but it reduces the design and homepage work.
- Should news, videos, and podcasts use separate post types?
- Usually, standard posts with clear categories are enough for a small or medium publishing site. Use categories such as News, Video, and Podcast, then apply consistent templates and fields. Separate custom post types become useful when each format needs different editorial fields, permissions, archives, or workflows. Do not add custom post types just to make ordinary content look different.
- Can I host videos directly in WordPress?
- Yes, you can upload video files through the Video block, but external video hosting is often more practical for a media site. Large files use storage and bandwidth, and high traffic can strain ordinary hosting. Embedding a supported YouTube or Vimeo URL keeps the video delivery with that service while WordPress stores the article and presentation around it.
- How do I make podcast episodes appear in Apple Podcasts and other apps?
- Create a podcast feed through a podcast plugin or podcast hosting service, publish episodes with complete metadata, and submit that feed to the directories you want to use. Test the feed before submission. Publishing an ordinary WordPress post with an audio player is not enough if the post is not included in a podcast-compatible RSS feed.
- Why is my podcast episode visible on the site but missing from the feed?
- The episode is often outside the podcast category or feed selected in the podcast settings. Check that the post is published, has a reachable audio file, includes the required episode details, and belongs to the correct podcast feed. Also check the feed's item limit and caching. A feed URL may continue showing an older version until caches refresh.
