The short answer

You can set a global commission rate, then override it for individual affiliates or products in your affiliate plugin. If you need a different rate for one affiliate on one specific product, the standard settings usually are not enough; use an add-on that supports per-affiliate product rates.

The route
  1. 01Choose your commission structure
  2. 02Set the default commission rate
  3. 03Set an individual affiliate rate
  4. 04Set a product-specific rate
  5. 05Handle affiliate-and-product combinations
  6. 06Test the payout before launch

What you need

  • An affiliate plugin connected to your store
  • Admin access to WordPress
  • WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads if rates depend on products
  • Your commission rules and payout currency

Choose your commission structure

Decide whether you are paying a percentage of each sale or a fixed amount. Also decide whether the rate applies to every affiliate, a group of affiliates, a product, or a particular affiliate selling a particular product.

Write down the priority you expect when rules overlap. For example, a storewide 10% rate might be the fallback, while selected products or affiliates receive a higher rate.

Set the default commission rate

Open your affiliate plugin’s commission settings and set the default referral rate. Choose a percentage or flat amount, enter the value, and save the settings. In AffiliateWP, this is under AffiliateWP > Settings > Commissions. The default applies when no more specific rule exists.

Check how a flat rate is calculated. Depending on the integration, it may apply per product sold or once per order, which can produce very different payouts on larger orders.

Set an individual affiliate rate

To give one affiliate a different rate across their referrals, go to the affiliate list, open that affiliate’s profile, enter the custom referral rate, and save. This is useful for negotiated partnerships or affiliates who consistently deliver higher-value customers.

Remember that an individual rate can affect all products unless a more specific product-and-affiliate rule is configured. Record the agreement outside WordPress so you know why the rate was changed.

Set a product-specific rate

If only certain products should pay differently, edit the product in your ecommerce system and look for the affiliate settings in the product data area. In the WooCommerce integration, you can choose a percentage or flat rate and enter the product’s commission value. The product rate replaces the default rate for that product.

This manual route is fine when every affiliate gets the same rate for a product. It becomes difficult to manage when several affiliates need different rates for the same product.

Handle affiliate-and-product combinations

The standard settings do not normally provide a separate rate for every affiliate-and-product combination. To set, for example, 10% for Affiliate A on Product 1 but 20% for Affiliate B on that same product, you need an extension that adds per-affiliate product rates.

With AffiliateWP Product Rates, activate the add-on, open AffiliateWP > Affiliates, edit the affiliate, and use the Product Rates section. Select one or more products, choose Percentage or Flat Rate, enter the amount, and update the affiliate. The custom rule then applies to that affiliate and those products.

Test the payout before launch

Create a test order using the affiliate link or coupon and confirm the referral amount in your referrals report. Test a normal product, a product with a custom rate, and an order containing multiple products if you use flat commissions.

Watch for duplicate product rules. AffiliateWP documents that a product should not be added to more than one product-rate location, because the rate can be ignored when the same product is assigned more than once. Also check renewals, refunds, tax, shipping, and discounts before announcing the new rates.

The fast route

Let AffiliateWP do it

Assigns product- or affiliate-specific commission rates, ideal when one flat affiliate payout structure is too rigid.

Questions

Can I set a different commission rate for each affiliate?
Yes, most affiliate plugins let you edit an individual affiliate and assign a custom percentage or flat commission. That rate normally overrides the storewide default for that affiliate. Use this option when the affiliate should receive the same custom rate across their referrals, rather than a different rate for each product.
Can I set a different rate for each product?
Yes, if your ecommerce integration supports product-specific commissions. Edit the product and enter its affiliate rate in the product data or affiliate settings. This works well when all affiliates should receive the same commission for that product, but it does not by itself create a separate rate for every affiliate.
Can one affiliate earn a different rate for one specific product?
Yes, but you usually need a per-affiliate product-rates extension. The extension adds a product-rate section to the affiliate profile, where you select the product and set either a percentage or flat amount. That rule is more specific than the normal global and product settings.
Why is the wrong commission rate being used?
The wrong rate is usually caused by overlapping rules, a duplicate product assignment, or a misunderstanding of the rate hierarchy. Check the affiliate profile, product settings, category settings, and any rate add-ons. A product should not be assigned to more than one product-rate location, and renewals may follow different rules from the first purchase.
What is the fastest way to customise affiliate commission rates?
Set the global rate first, then use the affiliate profile for individual overrides and the product settings for product-wide overrides. If you need affiliate-specific rates for individual products, install AffiliateWP Product Rates and enter the rules from each affiliate’s Product Rates section instead of maintaining custom code or scattered manual adjustments.
