How to pay affiliates in multiple currencies
WordPress does not pay affiliates in multiple currencies by itself. For a small programme, record commissions in one base currency and convert approved balances when you pay them. For larger programmes, use a payout integration that handles currency conversion and keeps an audit trail.
- 01Set your currency policy
- 02Use the manual route for small programmes
- 03Choose a payout provider
- 04Audit the payout before sending
- 05Send and reconcile each batch
- 06Automate the conversion and reporting
What you need
- A WordPress affiliate programme or commission-tracking system
- Admin access to WordPress and your payment provider
- A declared base currency and payout schedule
- Affiliate payout details, including country and payment account
Set your currency policy
Choose one accounting currency for commissions, such as USD or EUR. Keep the commission ledger in that currency even when customers pay in other currencies. Publish the rule for affiliates: state whether the exchange rate is fixed when the sale is approved or taken on the payout date, and explain who pays conversion or transfer fees.
Do not promise a local-currency amount without defining the rate date. Otherwise, the amount shown to an affiliate can differ from the amount they receive.
Use the manual route for small programmes
You can handle this without a dedicated multi-currency payout plugin if you have only a few affiliates. Approve commissions, export or copy the balances in your base currency, group recipients by the currency you will send, calculate each amount using your stated rate, and record the original balance, rate, fee, payout currency and final amount.
This route is fine for occasional payouts, but it becomes error-prone when refunds, changing rates, tax records or dozens of affiliates are involved. Keep the calculation sheet and payment receipt together with the commission record.
Choose a payout provider
Use a provider that supports the countries and currencies your affiliates need. PayPal Payouts supports multiple currencies, but each payout batch uses one currency, so create separate batches for USD, EUR, GBP and so on. PayPal also requires enough balance to cover the payments and fees.
Stripe can convert a payout into an eligible affiliate's local currency, but availability depends on the merchant and recipient countries and on the payout integration you use. Check country coverage before promising bank payouts.
Audit the payout before sending
Match every approved commission to one affiliate account and verify the recipient's email, bank details or payment ID. Check that refunds, reversals and minimum payout rules have been removed from the payable total.
Preview the conversion, provider fee and net amount. Save a copy of the calculation before sending. The common Friday failure is paying the same commission twice because the spreadsheet was updated but the affiliate dashboard was not.
Send and reconcile each batch
Send one currency batch at a time, then save the provider's batch ID and status. Mark commissions as paid only after the provider confirms the transfer or after your bank confirms it, rather than when you merely submit the payout.
For rejected or returned payments, leave the commission unpaid, correct the recipient details and document any exchange-rate difference before retrying. Your records should show the base-currency commission and the actual amount delivered.
Automate the conversion and reporting
For a growing programme, AffiliateWP – Multi-Currency can convert referral amounts from customer currencies into the programme currency using manual rates or an exchange-rate service. Its documentation also separates commission conversion from affiliate payout delivery, so you still need a supported payout method for sending local-currency funds.
Configure the programme currency, add the currencies you accept, choose how rates are updated, and test a referral in each currency. If you need local bank payouts, connect the supported international payout option and confirm country coverage before enabling it for affiliates.

Questions
- Can WordPress pay affiliates in multiple currencies without a plugin?
- WordPress itself has no affiliate ledger or multi-currency payout system. You can pay manually by keeping commissions in one base currency, converting approved balances in a spreadsheet and sending separate payment batches. That works for a small programme, but a plugin or payout integration becomes useful when you need automatic conversions, refunds, status tracking and reports.
- Should commissions be recorded in the customer's currency or one base currency?
- Record commissions in one declared programme currency, while retaining the customer's original currency and amount for reference. This gives you consistent reporting and avoids changing historical commissions whenever exchange rates move. Convert the customer amount when the order or referral is recorded, then state whether payouts use that locked rate or a rate from the payment date.
- Can PayPal pay a mixed-currency affiliate batch?
- No. PayPal Payouts requires a separate payout for each currency, so group recipients by currency before sending. Check the preview for conversion and fees, and make sure the PayPal balance can fund the complete batch. Sending one mixed spreadsheet without separating currencies is a common cause of rejected or incorrectly converted payments.
- Does currency conversion automatically mean affiliates receive local currency?
- No. Currency conversion in commission reports and currency conversion at payout are separate functions. A multi-currency tracking tool can show the correct commission in your programme currency, but the payment provider must also support the affiliate's country and payout currency. Confirm the recipient's country, delivery method, fees and final amount before enabling automatic payments.
