How to create a startup website in WordPress

DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create a startup website in WordPress without a special plugin: choose a suitable theme, create your core pages, set a static homepage, build the header and footer, then test the site on mobile. For the fastest setup, use a theme with starter demos and drag-and-drop layouts.

What you need

  • A WordPress site with administrator access
  • Your logo, colours and brand fonts
  • Homepage copy, product screenshots and contact details
  • A domain name and hosting

Plan the site structure

Keep the first version small. Create a homepage, About page, Product or Services page, Pricing page if needed, Contact page, Blog page if you will publish articles, and Privacy Policy page. A startup homepage normally needs a clear value proposition, one primary call to action, proof such as customer logos or results, a short feature section and a final call to action.

Decide what the main action should be before you design anything. It might be booking a demo, starting a trial, joining a waitlist or contacting sales. Do not give every section a different primary button.

Choose a theme route

The manual route is fine for a simple brochure site. Install a block theme from Appearance > Themes > Add New, then use Appearance > Editor to edit global styles, templates, the header, footer and navigation. The Site Editor is available when a block theme is active.

You do not need a plugin to create the basic layout. You may later add a form, analytics, SEO controls, bookings or a customer portal, but those are separate requirements. The drawback of the manual route is time: you must build the page sections, responsive spacing and reusable styles yourself.

Create the core pages

Go to Pages > Add New and create the pages from your plan. Use blocks such as Group, Columns, Cover, Heading, Paragraph, Image, Buttons, Testimonials and Query Loop. Give each page one clear purpose and use descriptive page titles and slugs.

For the homepage, put the strongest message near the top. Explain who the product is for, what problem it solves and what visitors should do next. WordPress pages are intended for lasting site content, and published pages can be added to the site navigation.

Set the homepage and menu

Create an empty page called Blog if you want a separate posts area. Then go to Settings > Reading, select A static page, choose your Home page as the homepage and choose Blog as the posts page. The homepage and posts page cannot be the same page.

Edit the navigation from the Navigation block in the Site Editor for a block theme. Add only the most important links, such as Product, Pricing, About and Contact. A common Friday problem is creating a page but forgetting to add it to the menu; new pages are not always added automatically after a navigation has been customised.

Apply consistent startup branding

Open Appearance > Editor > Styles and set the colours, typography, layout width and spacing for the whole site. Global styles are better than formatting every heading and button separately because one change can update the site consistently.

Use a small colour palette, a readable body font and one button style. Check the header, hero section, pricing cards and footer at narrow widths. Avoid placing important text inside an image, and compress large screenshots before uploading them.

Test before launch

Open the site in a private browser window and test every menu link, button, form, image and mobile layout. Confirm that the homepage is the intended page, the logo links home, the contact details are correct and the privacy page is published and linked. WordPress can help create a privacy page, but you are responsible for making its content accurate and keeping it current.

Set a readable structure under Settings > Permalinks, save the changes, and check a few page URLs. If an update appears not to work, clear the browser, plugin or hosting cache before rebuilding the page; cached versions are a frequent reason design changes seem to disappear.

Fast way: Use Framey when you want a startup or SaaS layout without building every section from scratch. Install the theme ZIP through Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme, activate it, select a suitable starter layout if available, then replace the demo copy, colours, images and calls to action. This is quicker than the manual route, but still test the imported pages and remove sections your business does not need.

Questions

Can I create a startup website in WordPress without a page builder plugin?
Yes, a basic startup website can be built with WordPress pages, blocks and a block theme, without a page builder plugin. The Site Editor lets you adjust global styles, templates, headers, footers and navigation. A plugin becomes useful for features WordPress does not provide by itself, such as advanced forms, bookings, memberships or product-specific integrations.
What pages should a startup website include?
A startup website usually needs a focused homepage, About page, Product or Services page, Contact page and Privacy Policy page. Add Pricing, Customers, Case Studies, Careers or a Blog only when they support a real visitor need. Keep the main navigation short and send visitors towards one primary action, such as booking a demo or starting a trial.
Why is my Home page not showing when I visit the domain?
Your Home page may not be assigned as the static front page. Go to Settings > Reading, select A static page, choose the intended Home page, select a separate Blog page if required, and save the changes. A page can exist and work from its menu link while WordPress still shows recent posts or another page at the root URL.
Why does a new page not appear in my startup website menu?
Creating and publishing a page does not always add it to the visible menu. With a block theme, edit the Navigation block or go to the Site Editor navigation screen and add the page link manually. If the navigation was converted from an automatic page list into individual links, future pages will normally need to be added by hand.
Do I need a plugin for a startup contact form?
WordPress does not include a complete contact-form system in its core editor, so you normally need a form plugin or an external form service for submissions. You can avoid that requirement by linking to an email address or booking service, but a proper form usually gives visitors a clearer path and lets you control the fields, notifications and spam protection.
