How to limit affiliate commissions by product in WordPress
With AffiliateWP, edit a supported product and enable its option to disable referrals. That is fine for a few exclusions, but a large catalogue is easier to manage with an allowlist that permits commissions only for selected product IDs.
- 01Confirm your integration supports exclusions
- 02Exclude individual products manually
- 03Choose an allowlist for large catalogues
- 04Enter the allowed product IDs
- 05Check zero-amount referral behaviour
- 06Test a mixed product order
What you need
- AffiliateWP connected to a supported ecommerce integration
- Administrator access to WordPress
- The product IDs or product list you want to include or exclude
Confirm your integration supports exclusions
First check that AffiliateWP is connected to a supported integration such as WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, or MemberPress. Product-level referral controls are integration-dependent, so the setting may not appear for every store setup. AffiliateWP documents product exclusions for its WooCommerce integration.
Exclude individual products manually
For WooCommerce, go to Products, edit the product, and find the AffiliateWP product settings. Enable Disable referrals, then update the product. Repeat this for every product that should not earn an affiliate commission.
This manual route is suitable when you have only a few exclusions. The drawback is administration: new products are not automatically excluded, and changing a large catalogue one product at a time is easy to get wrong.
Choose an allowlist for large catalogues
If most products should not earn commission, use an allowlist instead of disabling referrals repeatedly. The AffiliateWP Allowed Products add-on blocks products by default and lets you enter the product IDs that are allowed to generate commissions.
This is usually the faster route for a large catalogue or a programme that pays affiliates only for selected products.
Enter the allowed product IDs
Install and activate the add-on, then go to AffiliateWP > Settings > Integrations. Find the Allowed Products option and enter the IDs of the products that should earn commissions. Products not listed remain blocked. You can find a WooCommerce product ID by hovering over the product in the Products list or opening its edit screen.
For variable products, enter the parent product ID rather than individual variation IDs. This is a common source of mistakes when a variation appears to be allowed but still produces no commission.
Check zero-amount referral behaviour
When the allowlist blocks a product, AffiliateWP may record a referral with a 0.00 value. If Ignore Referrals with Zero Amounts is enabled in AffiliateWP’s commission settings, those referrals are not saved. Decide which behaviour you want before reviewing reports, because a blocked product can otherwise look like a tracked referral with no payout.
Test a mixed product order
Place a test order containing one allowed product and one blocked product through an affiliate link. Confirm that the allowed item earns commission and the blocked item does not. Also test a variable product and any refund workflow your store uses.
Do this after adding products or changing IDs. A Friday-afternoon failure usually comes from forgetting the parent ID for a variable product, leaving the allowlist empty, or assuming that a product exclusion applies to an unsupported integration.
Let AffiliateWP Allowed Products do it
Product allowlisting for AffiliateWP commissions; choose it when only selected products should earn affiliate payouts.

Questions
- Can AffiliateWP disable commission for one product?
- Yes. In supported integrations, edit the product and enable AffiliateWP’s option to disable referrals. This works well when you need to exclude a small number of products. For many exclusions, it is slower and more error-prone than an allowlist because every product must be updated individually and new products need separate attention.
- What is the fastest way to allow commission only on selected products?
- Use AffiliateWP Allowed Products. After activation, products are blocked by default, and you enter the product IDs that should generate referrals under AffiliateWP’s integration settings. This reverses the usual task from excluding hundreds of products to maintaining a shorter list of approved products.
- Do I enter variation IDs for WooCommerce variable products?
- No. Enter the parent product ID when you want an AffiliateWP allowlist entry to cover a variable product. Entering only a variation ID can leave the product blocked, because the add-on checks the parent product for variable products in supported integrations.
- What happens to a blocked product in an affiliate order?
- A blocked product can produce a referral with a zero commission amount. If AffiliateWP’s Ignore Referrals with Zero Amounts setting is enabled, the zero-value referral is not saved. Check this setting when reconciling reports so you know whether blocked purchases should be visible or omitted.
- Can I limit commissions by product without AffiliateWP?
- Only if the affiliate plugin or ecommerce integration you use provides its own product-level commission controls. WordPress and WooCommerce do not create a universal product commission rule for every affiliate system. Check your affiliate integration’s documentation before adding custom code, because the available setting and product data can differ between integrations.
