How to add distortion effects to WordPress sliders
You can add simple ripples, waves and warps with Slider Revolution’s built-in background transitions. For distortion on individual layers, ongoing effects or finer controls, use a WebGL add-on rather than trying to reproduce the effect with CSS alone.
- 01Choose the distortion target
- 02Use the built-in background transition
- 03Add a layer-level WebGL effect
- 04Install a distortion add-on
- 05Apply and tune the effect
- 06Check mobile and fallbacks
What you need
- A WordPress site with Slider Revolution 7 installed
- Administrator access to WordPress
- Optimised slide images or videos
- A staging site or recent backup
Choose the distortion target
Decide whether the effect should distort the whole slide background, an image or video layer, or the transition between two slides. Background transitions are the simplest option. Distorting text and buttons is usually a poor choice because it can reduce readability.
Use a short, subtle effect for a hero slider. Strong ripples and long transitions can make navigation feel slow, especially on phones.
Use the built-in background transition
For a basic effect, open the module in Slider Revolution, select the Slide Background, click the Animation icon, choose Essentials, then open the Transition tab. The Fluid and Distort categories include presets for waves, drop ripples, morphs, noise, stretches and other warped transitions.
Choose a preset, adjust its available style, strength or easing options, and apply it to the background. This route is fine when you only need a distortion as one slide changes to the next. It does not create a continuously distorted foreground layer.
Add a layer-level WebGL effect
To affect an image, shape or video layer rather than the whole background, select that layer, switch to Animation mode, choose Advanced, click Add under Animation Targets, and select Effects (WebGL). Slider Revolution documents this target for image, shape and video layers. It is not available for text layers, slide backgrounds or YouTube and Vimeo video layers.
Add keyframes where the effect should start and stop. Keep the first version mild, because several WebGL effects running together can make the slide difficult to read and more expensive to render.
Install a distortion add-on
If the built-in transitions do not provide the effect you need, open the Slider Revolution Plugin Dashboard and click Addons. The Addon Library can install and activate add-ons for a module or site-wide, depending on the add-on. After adding one to a module, save the module or the change will not be retained.
For a product-focused route, Slider Revolution Distortion Addon adds configurable waves, ripples, turbulence and related effects to Slider Revolution slides. It is intended for cases where you need more control than the standard transitions provide.
Apply and tune the effect
In the Module Editor, open Add, choose Effects, then open the Effects Library. Filter by Distortion & Warp and apply an effect to the selected layer or create a new effect layer. The library supports effects aimed at layers, slide backgrounds or the whole module, depending on the effect.
Reduce intensity until the subject remains recognisable, then adjust speed or timing so the distortion finishes before the next important message appears. Do not apply a background effect while expecting it to distort separate text or button layers; background effects affect the background only.
Check mobile and fallbacks
Preview the slider at desktop, tablet and phone widths, then test it on a real lower-powered phone. Large images, several animated layers and multiple WebGL effects can cause dropped frames. Slider Revolution includes device controls for limiting some motion effects on mobile, and its documentation notes that skipping pan and zoom on mobile can help performance.
Also test with browser graphics acceleration unavailable, reduced motion preferences where relevant, and keyboard navigation. Keep the slide understandable without the distortion: the effect should decorate the content, not carry its meaning.
Let Slider Revolution Distortion Addon do it
Adds customizable waves, ripples, and turbulence to Slider Revolution slides when standard transitions need more visual impact.

Questions
- Can I create a ripple effect without another plugin?
- Yes, if you already use Slider Revolution 7, its built-in slide background transitions include fluid and distort presets such as drop ripples, water surfaces and morphs. That is enough for a transition between background images. You need an add-on or custom WebGL development for more specialised effects, continuous distortion or effects applied to selected foreground layers.
- Why does the distortion affect the image but not the text?
- Because many distortion effects target the slide background or supported media layers rather than every element on the slide. Slider Revolution’s WebGL Effects target supports image, shape and video layers, but not text layers or the slide background. Apply the effect to the correct layer, or use a background transition when the entire background should warp.
- Why is my distortion effect missing from the editor?
- The effect may belong to an add-on that has not been installed or enabled for the current module. Open the Addon Library, add the required extension to the module, then save the module. Also check that you selected a compatible target, because the Effects Library filters effects according to whether the selected item can use them.
- Do distortion effects slow down WordPress sliders?
- They can, particularly when large images, video, several animated layers or multiple WebGL effects run together. Use appropriately sized media, keep the effect short and test on a lower-powered phone. If motion is not essential on mobile, disable or limit suitable motion effects in the module’s Browser & Device settings.
- What is the fastest way to add a distortion effect?
- The fast route is to open the slide background’s Animation settings, choose Essentials, select the Fluid or Distort transition category, pick a preset such as a ripple or wave, adjust its strength and easing, and save the module. Use the Distortion Addon instead when you need distortion on individual layers or more detailed control.
