How to create a professional portfolio in WordPress

Design & Layout Time About 45 minutes manually, or 20 minutes with a suitable theme and demo content 6 steps Updated 1 Nov 2026

DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can build a professional portfolio with WordPress pages, image galleries and a clear navigation menu. For separate project entries, use a portfolio-capable theme or plugin; the fastest route is a theme with ready-made layouts and demo import.

What you need

  • A WordPress site with admin access
  • Project images and short descriptions
  • A logo, colour palette and contact details

Plan your portfolio structure

Decide what visitors need to see first: your strongest work, the services you offer and how to contact you. A simple structure is Home, Portfolio, About and Contact.

Prepare one image set and a short description for each project. Include the client or industry, your role, the problem, the work you delivered and the result. This makes the site more useful than a grid of images with no context.

Create the main pages

Go to Pages > Add New and create the pages you planned. WordPress pages can be used for a complete small portfolio site, and the block editor lets you add headings, images, buttons, galleries and other blocks.

Set the page titles and slugs before publishing. Keep the homepage focused: introduce yourself, show three to six selected projects and add a clear contact button rather than displaying every project at once.

Build each project manually

For a small portfolio, you do not need a dedicated portfolio plugin. Create one page per project, add a featured image, then use Image, Gallery, Columns or Group blocks to present the work. The Gallery block supports multiple images, columns, captions and image ordering.

This manual route is easy to control, but it becomes repetitive when you have many projects. You will need to maintain each page yourself, and filtering by service, category or technology will require extra theme or plugin support.

Create the portfolio index

On the Portfolio page, add a grid of project images with the project name, a short label and a link to each project page. You can build this with Image, Columns, Query Loop or pattern blocks, depending on your theme.

If you use a block theme, open Appearance > Editor to adjust site-wide styles, templates, patterns, colours, typography and layout. If your theme does not offer a suitable grid, use a portfolio plugin or a theme with a dedicated portfolio content type.

Fix navigation and presentation

Add Home, Portfolio, About and Contact to the site navigation so visitors can reach the important pages quickly. Pages can be added to the navigation after they are created.

Use consistent image ratios, short headings and generous spacing. Check the site on a phone before publishing. Large original images are a common cause of slow portfolio pages, so resize them before upload and write useful alternative text for images that convey information.

Use the fast route with Mellow

If you want the structure and visual treatment done quickly, use Mellow, a portfolio-focused WordPress theme with demo import and flexible layouts. Import the closest demo, replace the sample projects with your own work, then adjust the colours, fonts, navigation and contact details.

This is faster than building every project layout from scratch, while still leaving you control over the content. Before importing demo content, make a backup and check whether the import adds pages, menus or plugins you do not need.

Questions

Can I create a WordPress portfolio without a plugin?
Yes, a small portfolio can be built with regular pages, featured images and Gallery blocks. Create one page for each project and link those pages from a portfolio index. This is fine for a handful of projects, but a plugin or portfolio-focused theme becomes useful when you need filtering, repeated project fields or a consistent archive layout.
Should each portfolio project have its own page?
Yes, separate project pages are usually better than putting every image on one page. They give you room to explain the brief, your role, the process and the result, and they give visitors a direct URL to share. Use a portfolio grid or Query Loop on the main page to link to those individual entries.
What happens to portfolio projects when I change themes?
It depends on how the portfolio was created. Pages and images normally remain, but a portfolio content type supplied by a theme may stop displaying correctly when that theme is replaced. A plugin-based content type is generally less tied to the theme; Jetpack, for example, describes its Portfolio content type as remaining available when you switch themes.
How many projects should a professional portfolio show?
Show your strongest relevant work rather than everything you have made. Three to six projects is enough for a new portfolio, while an established freelancer can add more if the projects are organised by service or category. Each entry should explain the work, not just display an image, so remove weak or outdated examples.
Why does my portfolio look good on desktop but break on mobile?
Portfolio layouts often break when images have inconsistent proportions, columns are too narrow or text is fixed to desktop-sized widths. Use responsive blocks or a responsive theme, keep project titles short, compress large images and test every project page on a phone. Also check that galleries do not rely on text placed over an image to convey essential information.
