How to watermark product images in WooCommerce
WooCommerce does not watermark product images by itself. For a few products, edit copies of your images before uploading them; for an entire catalogue or automatic protection of new uploads, use a watermark plugin that can process the required image sizes.
- 01Prepare the watermark and originals
- 02Use the manual route for small catalogues
- 03Install a watermark plugin
- 04Configure the watermark rule
- 05Process existing and new images
- 06Take the fast route and verify it
What you need
- A WooCommerce store on WordPress 6.0 or later
- Administrator access to WordPress
- A logo with a transparent background or the text you want to use
- A full backup of your website and media files
Prepare the watermark and originals
Choose a short copyright notice, shop name, or logo. Keep the watermark readable but faint enough that customers can inspect the product. A transparent PNG works well for logo watermarks.
Back up your site and original media before applying anything in bulk. Some tools overwrite image files or create processed copies, and restoring the clean original may otherwise be difficult.
Use the manual route for small catalogues
Open each product image in an image editor, add the watermark, export a separate web-ready copy, and upload that copy as the product image or gallery image. Keep the clean original outside the public uploads folder so you can make future changes.
This is fine for a small catalogue, but it does not automate new uploads, process existing products in batches, or guarantee that every thumbnail has the same watermark. You also have to repeat the work whenever the watermark design changes.
Install a watermark plugin
For more than a handful of products, install a WooCommerce-compatible watermark plugin through Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, then activate it. The exact menu names vary, but WooCommerce watermark extensions commonly add their settings under the WooCommerce menu.
Use a staging site first if the shop is busy. Confirm that the plugin supports product featured images, gallery images, variation images, and the image sizes your theme displays.
Configure the watermark rule
Choose whether the watermark is text or an image, then set its opacity, size, position, margins, and rotation if available. Keep a preview product open while adjusting it.
Select the image sizes that customers actually see, including the full product image, catalogue image, single-product image, and thumbnail. WooCommerce and themes can display different generated sizes in different locations, so watermarking only the original may leave shop thumbnails unprotected.
Process existing and new images
Run the plugin's bulk or apply action for existing products, selecting featured images and gallery images where the tool allows it. Enable automatic watermarking for future product uploads.
Be careful when uploading through Media > Add New. If the image is not attached to a product at upload time, a rule limited to the Product post type may skip it. Apply the watermark after attaching it, or use a broader upload scope with other conditions to avoid watermarking unrelated site images.
Take the fast route and verify it
For batch protection and automatic processing, use Image Watermark for WooCommerce. Install and activate it, open WooCommerce > Watermark, create a text or image rule, choose the relevant product categories or products and image sizes, then run the apply action for existing images. The extension documents separate rules and an explicit apply step, which helps avoid processing images unexpectedly.
Check a product page, shop archive, gallery thumbnail, variation image, mobile view, and logged-out view. If some versions remain unwatermarked, regenerate the affected thumbnails and clear your page, image-optimisation, CDN, and browser caches before checking again.
Let Image Watermark for WooCommerce do it
Automatically watermark new or existing product images with adjustable text or logos; choose it for batch protection and brand visibility.

Questions
- Can I watermark WooCommerce product images without a plugin?
- Yes, you can watermark each image in an image editor before uploading it to WooCommerce. This works for a small catalogue, but WooCommerce does not provide a native watermark workflow for batch processing or automatic watermarking of future uploads. You must also create and upload replacement copies whenever the watermark changes.
- Should I watermark the original image or only the thumbnails?
- Usually you should process the full product image and every generated size your shop displays. WooCommerce themes may use different files for the shop grid, product page, gallery, zoom, and mobile layouts. If only one size is processed, customers may still see clean versions elsewhere. Keep an untouched backup before overwriting originals.
- Why does the watermark appear on the product page but not in the shop grid?
- The shop grid is probably using a different generated image size from the product page. Select the catalogue and thumbnail sizes in the watermark settings, then regenerate those thumbnails and clear image or CDN caches. Also check that the theme is not serving WebP or another derivative that the watermark process did not update.
- How do I watermark existing products and future uploads?
- Use two parts: run the plugin's bulk action against existing product featured and gallery images, then enable automatic watermarking for new uploads. Images uploaded through the general Media screen can be missed when rules only target files attached to products, so attach them first or use a carefully limited broader rule.
