How to build a business website with Elementor

Design & Layout Time About 1–3 hours for a basic site, longer if you are writing content 6 steps Updated 30 Sep 2026

DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

Build the site page by page in Elementor, using global colours and fonts for consistency, then create the header, footer, navigation and responsive layouts. A small business site is fine to build manually, but a prebuilt Elementor demo is faster when you need several polished pages.

  2. 02Install Elementor and create pages
  3. 03Build the manual layout

What you need

  • A WordPress site with an Elementor-compatible theme
  • The Elementor plugin installed and activated
  • Admin access to WordPress
  • A logo, brand colours, page copy and business contact details

Plan the pages and content

List the pages the business actually needs before opening the editor. A practical starting point is Home, About, Services, Case studies or Projects, Contact, and Blog if the business will publish articles.

Prepare the logo, a short headline, service descriptions, contact details, calls to action and properly sized images. Decide which page should be the homepage. WordPress normally shows recent posts until you assign a static front page in Settings > Reading.

Install Elementor and create pages

Install a lightweight, Elementor-compatible theme, then create the required pages under Pages > Add New. Open each page with Edit with Elementor. For a full-width layout that keeps the theme header and footer, open the page settings and choose Elementor Full Width. Use Elementor Canvas only when you deliberately want a blank page without the theme header or footer.

Set the page you chose as Home under Settings > Reading, and assign a separate empty Blog page if you need WordPress to manage posts.

Build the manual layout

Use containers to structure each page: a hero area, a services section, proof such as testimonials or project logos, an about section, and a clear contact call to action. Add Heading, Text Editor, Image, Button, Icon or Form widgets as needed. Keep one main purpose per section and avoid filling the page with decorative widgets.

Set your colours and typography centrally in Elementor Site Settings, then reuse those global values instead of styling every widget separately. Elementor provides global colours, global fonts, theme styles and site layout settings for this purpose. The manual route is fine for a small brochure site, but repeating sections across several pages takes time and makes consistency easier to lose.

Create the header and footer

If your Elementor setup includes Theme Builder, create a header and footer from Elementor > Theme Builder, design them once, and assign them to Entire Site. Add the logo, primary navigation, phone or email link and one main call-to-action button to the header. Put contact details, legal links and social links in the footer. Elementor’s Theme Builder controls site parts such as headers and footers; the feature is available with Elementor Pro rather than the free editor.

If you do not have Theme Builder, use the theme’s own header and footer controls instead. A common Friday-afternoon failure is a missing header or footer caused by Canvas page layout, unpublished templates, missing display conditions or cached files. Check those items before rebuilding anything.

Check mobile and accessibility

Switch Elementor’s responsive view to desktop, tablet and mobile before publishing. Adjust heading sizes, spacing, image heights, button widths and container direction for smaller screens. Responsive values generally inherit from larger screens, so a desktop change can affect tablet and mobile until you set a specific value.

Use one clear H1 on each page, meaningful link text, readable colour contrast, descriptive image alt text and buttons that are easy to tap. Test the navigation, contact form, phone links, map, cookie notice and every important page in an incognito browser. If the editor and live page disagree after major style changes, clear Elementor’s files and data and purge any caching layer.

Use a prebuilt demo for speed

The fast route is to install Motela, choose a suitable prebuilt Elementor business demo, import the required pages and site parts, then replace the sample logo, text, images, colours, menu links and contact details. Its supplied feature set includes Elementor demos, inner-page layouts, custom widgets, header and footer variations and one-click demo import, which can remove much of the repetitive layout work.

Use a backup or staging site before importing. Demo imports can add pages, templates, menus and settings that conflict with an existing site; Elementor recommends importing kits on a clean site where possible. After import, connect the menu, site identity, logo and other dependencies, because imported designs may not have those connections set automatically.

Questions

Can I build a business website with the free version of Elementor?
Yes, you can build individual pages with the free Elementor editor, but the free version does not provide the full Pro Theme Builder workflow for creating global headers, footers and other site parts. You can instead use your theme’s header and footer settings, or use an Elementor-compatible theme that supplies those areas.
How many pages should a small business website have?
A small business website usually needs five to seven useful pages rather than dozens of thin pages. Start with Home, About, Services, Projects or Case studies, Contact and an optional Blog, then add industry-specific pages only when each one has distinct information and a clear search or customer purpose.
Why is my Elementor page not full width?
The page is often inheriting the theme’s default layout. Edit the page in Elementor, open Page Settings and choose Elementor Full Width if you want to keep the theme header and footer. Choose Elementor Canvas only for a completely blank page, because Canvas intentionally removes those theme elements.
Why does my Elementor header disappear on one page?
A missing header is usually caused by the page using Elementor Canvas, a header template that is not published, incorrect display conditions or stale cached files. Change the page to Default or Elementor Full Width, check the header’s display condition in Theme Builder, publish it, then clear Elementor’s files and data if the live page still shows the old result.
Should I use a template or build the site from scratch?
Use a template when you need a complete business site quickly and are happy to edit an existing visual direction. Build from scratch when the brand, content structure or unusual layouts matter more than speed. A template still needs careful editing: replace demo content, check responsive spacing, connect menus and forms, and remove pages or widgets the business does not need.
