How to build a WordPress website with Elementor
You can build a complete WordPress website with Elementor without writing code. Create your pages, set global colours and fonts, design each layout with containers and widgets, then check mobile views before publishing; a template kit is the fast route.
- 01Plan the site structure
- 02Build pages manually first
- 03Set the design system
- 04Fix layout and navigation
- 05Adjust desktop, tablet and mobile
- 06Test and publish the site
What you need
- A WordPress website with admin access
- The Elementor plugin installed and activated
- A domain, hosting account and site logo
- Website copy, images and page plan
Plan the site structure
List the pages you need before opening Elementor. A small business site usually needs Home, About, Services, Blog and Contact, plus privacy and other legal pages where applicable.
Create the pages from Pages > Add New, give each page a clear title, and publish or save them as drafts. Decide which page will be the home page and which, if any, will display your posts.
Build pages manually first
Open a page and choose Edit with Elementor. Add containers, then place widgets such as Heading, Text Editor, Image, Button and Form into them. Build one section at a time: introduction, benefits, services, proof, call to action and footer prompt.
This manual route is fine when you need a small, distinctive site or want full control. Its drawback is repetition: you must create spacing, typography, buttons and page sections yourself, and inconsistent settings can make the site look assembled rather than designed.
Set the design system
Open Elementor’s site settings and define the main global colours and fonts before styling every widget. Set the page content width, default spacing and site identity where those controls are available.
Use the global colour and typography choices throughout the site instead of entering separate values for every heading or button. If you change the brand colour later, this makes the update much quicker and reduces mismatched styles.
Fix layout and navigation
Use a normal theme layout when you need the theme’s header and footer. Use Elementor Full Width when the page should stretch across the available content area while keeping the header and footer. Use Elementor Canvas only for pages such as landing pages where you deliberately want neither.
Build the navigation in your theme or, if your Elementor setup includes site-part templates, create a header and footer in Theme Builder and assign them to the correct display conditions. A common Friday-afternoon failure is a missing header caused by Canvas layout, an unpublished template or incorrect display conditions.
Adjust desktop, tablet and mobile
Switch Elementor’s responsive view to desktop, tablet and mobile. Reduce oversized headings, check container padding, make buttons easy to tap, and confirm that columns stack in a sensible order on smaller screens.
Responsive values are commonly inherited from larger screens, so check the smaller views rather than assuming they are correct. Do not hide an element accidentally: inspect its responsive visibility settings if it appears in the editor but not on the live page.
Test and publish the site
Preview every page, test the navigation, forms, buttons and images, and check the site on a real phone as well as inside Elementor. Confirm the home page under Settings > Reading, set a posts page if you have a blog, and remove placeholder text.
If changes are missing on the live site, clear Elementor’s generated files and data, then clear any WordPress, server, browser or CDN cache. For the fast route, start with an Elementor-ready theme such as Phlox Pro, choose from its pre-designed templates or demos, replace the sample content, and then complete the same responsive and link checks.

Questions
- Can I build a WordPress website with Elementor for free?
- Yes, you can build pages with the free Elementor plugin, but some site-wide features and widgets depend on your theme or Elementor Pro. The free route is suitable for basic page layouts when your theme supplies the header, footer and other required features. Check which functions your chosen theme provides before planning a design that depends on premium tools.
- Do I need Elementor Pro to build a complete website?
- No, you do not always need Elementor Pro to build a complete website. You can create page content with the free plugin and use your theme for the header, footer and navigation. Pro or another compatible solution becomes useful when you need Elementor-managed headers, footers, archive templates, dynamic templates, forms or other advanced site-wide features.
- Why is my Elementor page not full width?
- A page is often not full width because it is inheriting the theme’s default template or content width. Edit the page settings and choose Elementor Full Width if you want to keep the header and footer, or Elementor Canvas if you want a blank landing-page layout. Container content width and theme padding can also limit the visible area.
- Why is my Elementor header or footer missing?
- A missing header or footer is usually caused by Canvas layout, an unpublished template, incorrect display conditions or cached files. Check the page layout first, then confirm that the template is published and assigned to the intended pages. Clear Elementor’s files and data and any site or browser cache before checking again.
- What is the fastest way to build an Elementor website?
- The fastest route is to import a complete Elementor site kit or start from a theme with ready-made demos and templates. Replace the colours, fonts, logo, text and images, remove sections you do not need, and check every page on mobile. Phlox Pro is a suitable option when you want a choice of layouts for different site types rather than a single-purpose design.
