How to create coupon codes for affiliates
You can create the discount codes manually in WooCommerce, but WooCommerce alone will not credit sales to individual affiliates. For reliable coupon attribution, use an affiliate plugin that connects each coupon to an affiliate account and records the resulting referral.

What you need
- A WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads store with coupons enabled
- Admin or shop manager access
- Approved affiliate accounts
- A defined discount, commission rate and expiry policy
Choose a code format
Give each affiliate a distinct code that is easy to read and remember, such as JAMIE10 or DESIGNER15. Avoid spaces, ambiguous characters and codes that could be confused with store-wide promotions.
Decide the discount, eligible products, expiry date, total usage limit and per-customer limit before creating the code. Record the affiliate, commission rate and campaign name in an internal spreadsheet or your affiliate system.
Create the coupon manually
For WooCommerce, go to Marketing > Coupons, select Add new coupon, and enter the affiliate's code. Choose a percentage, fixed cart or fixed product discount, then set the amount and expiry date.
Use Usage restrictions to limit products, categories, sale items, spend or allowed email addresses. Use Usage limits for the total number of redemptions and the number of times one customer can use the code. WooCommerce provides these coupon controls, but they do not by themselves attribute a sale to an affiliate.
Use the manual tracking route
If you only have a few affiliates, you can leave the codes as ordinary WooCommerce coupons and track performance from coupon usage, order records or exports. Keep one code assigned to one affiliate, then calculate commissions manually from completed orders and exclude refunded or cancelled purchases.
This route is workable for a small campaign, but it breaks down when codes are shared, renamed, reused or combined with affiliate links. WooCommerce also will not create an affiliate referral just because a coupon was redeemed, so there is no automatic commission record to reconcile.
Connect codes to affiliates
For automatic attribution, install and configure an affiliate system that supports coupon tracking for your ecommerce platform. In AffiliateWP with WooCommerce, enable the WooCommerce integration, create or edit the coupon under Marketing > Coupons, then select the affiliate in the Affiliate Discount? field.
When a customer redeems a coupon linked to that affiliate and completes a qualifying purchase, the coupon can create a referral even when the customer did not use an affiliate URL. The same feature supports several other integrations, including Easy Digital Downloads.
Set approval and reporting rules
Tell affiliates exactly where they may publish the code, whether it can be combined with other offers, and whether commission is paid on discounted orders. Review referrals against completed orders rather than visits or coupon applications alone.
Check the affiliate dashboard and your store orders regularly. A common Friday problem is a code that works for customers but is assigned to the wrong affiliate, so verify the affiliate name, discount rules and commission before announcing each code.
Take the fast route with AffiliateWP
Choose AffiliateWP when coupon-based attribution matters more than referral links alone. Its tracked affiliate coupons connect redemptions to affiliate accounts, and the Vanity Coupon Codes add-on lets affiliates request personalised names for assigned coupons while you approve or reject the requests.
Install AffiliateWP, enable the ecommerce integration, assign each coupon to an affiliate, and review the coupon referrals in the dashboard. This removes the spreadsheet and manual reconciliation work, while still leaving WooCommerce in charge of the actual discount rules.
Let AffiliateWP do it
Personalized, trackable vanity coupons for affiliates; choose it when coupon-based attribution matters more than referral links alone.

Questions
- Can WooCommerce create affiliate coupon codes by itself?
- WooCommerce can create discount coupons, but it cannot by itself connect each coupon to an affiliate or award commission. You can track redemptions manually using orders and coupon reports, which is reasonable for a small campaign. For automatic attribution, you need an affiliate system or integration that records a referral when the assigned coupon is used.
- Does an affiliate need a referral link to earn commission from a coupon?
- No, an affiliate does not need a referral link when the coupon is connected to their affiliate account through a compatible tracking system. The customer can enter the code directly at checkout, and a completed qualifying order can create a referral for the assigned affiliate. An ordinary WooCommerce coupon without that connection will not do this automatically.
- How many coupon codes should each affiliate get?
- Give each affiliate one primary code unless you need separate campaigns, products or audiences. A single code makes attribution and reporting easier. Create additional codes only when you need to compare campaigns or apply different discount rules, and keep every code assigned to one affiliate so commissions are not disputed later.
- Why is an affiliate coupon not creating a referral?
- The usual causes are that the coupon is not assigned to an affiliate, the ecommerce integration is disabled, the order is not yet complete, or another tracking rule has taken precedence. Check the coupon's affiliate assignment, the integration settings and the order status first. Then test a fresh order with an eligible product and no conflicting coupon restrictions.
- Can affiliates choose their own coupon names?
- Yes, if your affiliate system includes a vanity-code feature. In AffiliateWP, the Vanity Coupon Codes add-on lets affiliates request custom names for coupons already assigned to them, while an administrator approves or rejects each request. The existing coupon continues to function while a request is awaiting review.
