How to create a construction business website with WordPress

DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create a construction business website with WordPress using pages, block layouts, image galleries and a clear navigation menu. The manual route is fine for a small brochure site; a construction-focused theme is quicker when you need polished project and service layouts.

The route
  1. 01Plan the site structure
  2. 02Choose the manual route
  3. 03Create the core pages
  4. 04Build the homepage layout
  5. 05Set the homepage and navigation
  6. 06Check mobile and enquiries

What you need

  • A WordPress site with administrator access
  • Your logo, colours and company contact details
  • Project photographs and service descriptions
  • A mobile-friendly WordPress theme

Plan the site structure

List the pages a potential client needs before changing the design. A practical starting structure is Home, Services, Projects, About, Testimonials and Contact. Add separate service pages if each service needs its own explanation or search visibility.

Use Pages for permanent company information rather than Posts. WordPress pages can be organised into parent and child pages, which is useful for placing individual services beneath a main Services page.

Choose the manual route

For a small brochure site, the manual route is usually enough. Install a suitable block theme, then build layouts with Groups, Columns, Cover, Image, Gallery, Buttons and Heading blocks. Block themes let you edit the header, footer, navigation, templates and page content from the Site Editor.

The drawback is time. You must create the visual system yourself, and WordPress does not provide a full construction project catalogue with filtering, enquiry forms or advanced case-study fields by default. A gallery and ordinary pages are enough for a small portfolio, but larger project libraries may need theme features or plugins.

Create the core pages

Go to Pages and create the pages from your plan. On the Home page, explain what the company does, where it works, the type of projects it accepts and the next action you want visitors to take. On each service page, describe the work, process, locations served and typical project outcome.

On Projects, give every important job its own section or page with the project type, location, scope, completion date and several properly sized images. Use real project details rather than stock photographs. WordPress lets you create pages with the block editor and publish them when the content is ready.

Build the homepage layout

Arrange the homepage in this order: a strong project image and headline, a short introduction, key services, selected projects, proof such as certifications or testimonials, service areas and a contact call to action. Keep the first screen focused on one action, such as Request a quote or Call the office.

Use a reusable block pattern for repeated sections such as a phone-and-enquiry callout or a three-column service row. Patterns can be inserted and edited like normal blocks, while synced patterns are useful when the same content must stay consistent across pages.

Set the homepage and navigation

Create a separate empty page for posts if you plan to publish company news, then set the designed Home page as the static front page in Settings and Reading. On block themes, you can also adjust the relevant front-page or home template in Appearance and Editor. Be careful: a Front Page template can take priority over the Reading setting, so an unexpected homepage may be caused by the active template rather than the page assignment.

Add Home, Services, Projects, About and Contact to the header navigation. With a block theme, edit the Navigation block in the Site Editor; with a classic theme, use the theme's menu screen. Only published pages appear as normal page links in the Navigation block.

Check mobile and enquiries

Preview every page at narrow and wide widths. Check that project images crop well, headings do not wrap awkwardly, buttons are easy to tap, the phone number works and the header does not become too tall. Compress large photographs before uploading them, because construction galleries can make pages slow.

WordPress core is enough for the layout, but a working contact form normally requires a form plugin or an external form service unless your theme supplies one. Submit a real test enquiry and confirm that it reaches the correct mailbox. Also check spam folders, the privacy notice and the success message before sending visitors to the form.

Questions

Can I create a construction website in WordPress without a page builder?
Yes, you can create a basic construction website with WordPress's block editor and a suitable block theme. Core blocks can handle service sections, project galleries, testimonials, buttons, headers and footers. The manual route is best for a small brochure site; advanced filtering, custom project fields or complex forms may require a plugin or a theme with those features.
What pages should a construction company website have?
A construction company website should usually have Home, Services, Projects, About, Testimonials and Contact pages. Add individual service pages when your work covers distinct areas such as extensions, commercial builds or renovations. If you publish updates, create a separate blog or news page rather than mixing time-sensitive posts into the main service navigation.
How should I display construction projects in WordPress?
Display each important construction project with a clear title, project type, location, scope of work, completion date and well-organised photographs. For a small number of projects, ordinary pages with Gallery blocks are sufficient. A large portfolio with categories, filters, custom fields or repeatable layouts usually needs specialist theme features or a portfolio plugin.
Why is my WordPress homepage showing the wrong layout?
The wrong homepage layout is often caused by the active template rather than the page content. Check the page selected under Settings and Reading, then inspect the Home or Front Page template under Appearance and Editor if you use a block theme. A Front Page template can override the Reading choice, so edit or remove that template if it is taking control.
Do I need a plugin for a construction website contact form?
You need a plugin or external form service unless your theme already includes a working contact form. WordPress's core editor provides the page layout, but it does not by itself create a complete enquiry workflow with fields, email delivery, spam protection and confirmation messages. Test the form after setup and verify that enquiries arrive at the intended address.
