DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create an online resume website in WordPress without a plugin by using a block theme, one focused page and a simple navigation menu. Add your experience, skills, projects and contact details, then check the layout on mobile before publishing.

  1. 01Plan the resume structure
  2. 02Choose the manual WordPress route
  3. 03Build the main page
  4. 04Add navigation and anchors
  5. 05Set the visual system

What you need

  • A WordPress site with admin access
  • Your resume content, headshot and portfolio links
  • A domain name and hosting
  • A block theme or resume-compatible theme

Plan the resume structure

Decide whether your resume should use one long page or several pages. A single page works well for a concise profile: start with your name and role, then add a summary, experience, skills, projects, education and contact section.

Prepare short, specific content before designing. Use results where possible, such as reduced support response time by 30%, rather than listing duties alone. Keep a full downloadable CV as an optional PDF, not as the only version of your resume.

Choose the manual WordPress route

The manual route does not require a resume plugin. Activate a block theme, then use Appearance > Editor to edit the header, footer, templates, styles and navigation. The Site Editor is available when a block theme is active, and its Styles area controls site-wide colours, typography and layout.

Create a page and build it with blocks such as Group, Columns, Image, Heading, Paragraph, List, Buttons and Social Icons. This route is fine when you are comfortable arranging blocks and only need a clean personal profile. Its drawback is that you must create the visual system yourself, and detailed resume features such as timelines or skill bars may need custom block patterns or CSS.

Build the main page

Make the first screen answer three questions quickly: who are you, what do you do and how can someone contact you. Use your name as the main heading, a precise job title below it, a short value statement, a professional photo if appropriate and one primary button such as Download CV or Contact me.

Follow with clearly labelled sections for About, Experience, Skills, Selected work, Education and Contact. Keep each section visually distinct with consistent spacing rather than using a different colour and layout for every block. WordPress pages can be built with the block editor and then added to site navigation.

Add navigation and anchors

For a one-page resume, add an HTML anchor to each major section, using short values such as experience, skills and contact. Add matching custom links to the Navigation block, using the page address followed by the anchor, such as /resume/#experience. The Navigation block supports menu structure, design settings and HTML anchors.

If you use Elementor instead of the block editor, add an anchor to each section and link the menu item to that anchor. Do not build the same page partly in Elementor and partly in the block editor unless the theme documentation specifically supports that setup; the two editors can create confusing spacing and template conflicts. Elementor documents anchor links and one-page navigation separately.

Set the visual system

Choose one body font and one display font at most, then set a readable base size and line height. Use a restrained palette with one accent colour for links and buttons. Make headings, dates, job titles and employer names easy to scan so a recruiter can find the important details without reading every paragraph.

Use the theme's global Styles controls where available instead of changing every block individually. Global changes are faster and reduce inconsistencies, but remember that editing a header, footer or template part can affect every page that uses it.

Check mobile and publish

Preview the page at narrow and wide widths. Check that headings do not wrap awkwardly, buttons are easy to tap, the photo is not cropped badly, long URLs do not overflow and the contact section is visible without excessive scrolling. Test the menu on a real phone, not only in a desktop browser's responsive preview.

If the mobile menu stops working, first check whether the mobile navigation uses the same menu as desktop. Then clear any optimisation cache and temporarily disable plugins one at a time to find a JavaScript or CSS conflict. One-page menus commonly fail when anchors are mistyped, the mobile menu is assigned separately, or optimisation software combines scripts incorrectly.

When the manual layout is taking too long, RyanCV is the faster route. It provides resume-focused templates, Elementor support, dark and light layouts, responsive design options and one-click demo imports, so you can replace the demo content instead of designing every resume section from scratch.

Questions

Can I create an online resume website without a plugin?
Yes, you can create one with a block theme and WordPress's built-in editor. Build the page from standard blocks, use the Navigation block for links and add section anchors for one-page scrolling. A plugin or page builder becomes useful when you want specialised resume layouts, visual timelines, advanced animations or faster drag-and-drop editing.
Should an online resume use one page or several pages?
Use one page when your experience is concise and visitors need to scan your profile quickly. Use separate pages when you have many projects, case studies, publications or a blog. You can also combine both approaches: keep the main resume on one page and link detailed project pages from the relevant experience section.
How do I make a WordPress resume menu scroll to a section?
Add an HTML anchor to the section, then create a navigation link pointing to that anchor. For example, give the experience section the anchor <code>experience</code> and link to <code>/resume/#experience</code>. Check the link on the published page and on mobile, because a wrong anchor value or a sticky header can make the destination appear misaligned.
What should the first screen of an online resume contain?
The first screen should contain your name, professional role, a short positioning statement and one clear action. Add a professional photo only if it suits your field and location. A recruiter should understand your speciality and know how to contact you without scrolling through a long biography or opening a PDF.
Why does my resume look fine on desktop but break on mobile?
Mobile problems usually come from fixed widths, oversized headings, crowded columns, hidden navigation settings or a plugin conflict. Inspect each section at a narrow width, replace rigid columns with stacked blocks, reduce heading sizes and test the real mobile menu. If the menu alone fails, clear optimisation caches and disable plugins one at a time to identify the conflict.
