How to create a personal portfolio website in WordPress

Plan your portfolio structure
Decide what visitors need to see first. A practical structure is Home, Work, About and Contact. Add a separate page for each important project if you need to explain the brief, your role, the process and the result.
Prepare a short introduction, a clear service description and a call to action such as “Hire me” or “Request a quote”. Keep the number of featured projects small enough that the strongest work gets attention.
Prepare images and project content
Resize large images before uploading them and use descriptive filenames. Each project should have a title, a short summary, your role, tools used, results where relevant and a link to the live work or case study.
Store images in the Media Library, then add suitable alternative text when an image communicates information. Do not use the same image as every project thumbnail, because visitors need to distinguish projects quickly.
Build the pages manually
Go to Pages > Add New and create the core pages. WordPress pages are suitable for timeless information such as an introduction or portfolio overview, and published pages can be added to site navigation.
On the Work page, use image, gallery, columns or grid blocks to show selected projects. Link each item to its full project page. For a small portfolio, this manual route is usually enough and avoids adding a portfolio plugin that may later create theme or compatibility problems.
Set the homepage and navigation
Create a Home page with your headline, best work, short biography, testimonials if you have permission to publish them, and a clear contact button. In the homepage settings, choose a static page as the front page and optionally assign a separate page for blog posts. WordPress supports static front pages and menus for published pages.
Add Home, Work, About and Contact to the main navigation. Check the menu on the front end rather than assuming it appears in the right location; themes can provide different menu locations or use a block-based navigation editor.
Check mobile and project links
Open the site on a phone and tablet, or use your page builder’s responsive preview. Check that headings do not wrap awkwardly, galleries do not overflow the screen, buttons are easy to tap and images load at a sensible size. Test every project link, contact address and navigation item. A common Friday problem is changing or deleting a page after adding it to the menu, leaving visitors with a 404 or an old URL. If a project page returns a 404 after changing its URL, save the permalink settings again and clear any caching layer.
