DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create a pet business website with WordPress without a page builder by using a block theme and the Site Editor. Build a clear home page, services page, contact page and navigation first; add WooCommerce only if you sell products online.

The route
  1. 01Plan the pages and user journey
  2. 02Choose a theme and set your style
  3. 03Build the core business pages
  4. 04Create the home page layout
  5. 05Add navigation and business features
  6. 06Check mobile view and launch

What you need

  • A WordPress installation with administrator access
  • Your logo, colours and business photos
  • A list of services, prices or booking details
  • A contact email, phone number and business address

Plan the pages and user journey

Start with the actions you want visitors to take. For a groomer, trainer or veterinary clinic, the main actions may be calling, requesting an appointment and finding your location. For a pet shop, add browsing products and checking delivery information.

Create a short page list: Home, Services, About, Contact and Blog. Add Shop only if you will sell products. Keep the main navigation short, and put the most important action, such as Book an appointment or Call now, in a prominent button.

Choose a theme and set your style

For the manual route, use a block theme and open Appearance > Editor. The Site Editor lets you change site styles, templates, navigation, headers and footers when the active theme supports it. With a classic theme, use its Customizer or theme settings instead.

Choose two readable fonts, one accent colour and one contrasting button colour. Use real photographs of your team, premises and animals where possible. Compress large images before uploading them, and write useful alternative text for images that convey information.

Build the core business pages

Create the pages from Pages > Add New, then add the content with blocks or your theme’s editor. WordPress pages are suitable for stable information such as services, opening hours and contact details, while posts are better for news and advice.

  • Home: explain who you help, show your main services and include one clear call to action.
  • Services: describe what is included, who it is for, typical prices or a request-a-quote instruction.
  • About: introduce the people, qualifications, approach and facilities behind the business.
  • Contact: include phone, email, address, opening hours, directions and a contact or enquiry method.

Do not hide essential information inside sliders. A visitor should understand what you offer and how to contact you without scrolling through several moving panels.

Create the home page layout

Arrange the home page in this order: a clear introduction, primary call to action, key services, trust signals, short about section, testimonials or reviews, location details and a final contact prompt. Use sections or group blocks to keep related content together.

Set the page as the static homepage under Settings > Reading if your theme does not manage this elsewhere. In a block theme, check the homepage template in the Site Editor so the header, page content and footer appear as intended.

Add navigation and business features

Add your published pages to the site navigation and place the same key action in the header and near the bottom of important pages. Check that the logo links home, the phone number works on mobile and the address opens the correct map location.

A basic service website can be built without a plugin. You need extra plugins when the business needs functions WordPress does not provide by itself, such as online bookings, payments, advanced forms or a product shop. If you sell products, install WooCommerce and check that its Shop, Cart, Checkout and My Account pages are separate; assigning the same page to multiple functions can break redirects and payment flows.

Check mobile view and launch

Preview every page on a phone and tablet. Look for cropped pet photos, buttons that are too close together, text that is hard to read, menus that do not open and forms that cannot be completed with a thumb. Test the phone link, enquiry form, map, checkout and any booking process before publishing.

Also check page titles, permalinks, image alternative text, opening hours and legal information. Keep a backup before changing the theme. If you use Elementor and a custom header or footer disappears, first check that the page is not using a canvas layout and that the template is published with the correct display conditions.

Questions

Can I create a pet business website without a plugin?
Yes, a small service-based pet business can use WordPress pages, blocks, a block theme and the Site Editor without a page builder plugin. This is fine for services, opening hours, contact details and blog posts. You need additional functionality for online bookings, payments, advanced forms or a product shop, so install only the plugins that match those requirements.
What pages should a pet business website have?
A pet business website should usually have Home, Services, About and Contact pages, with Shop, Booking, Locations or Blog added when needed. Put services, service areas, opening hours, prices or enquiry instructions where visitors can find them quickly. If you operate a clinic or handle animals, also explain qualifications, facilities, emergency arrangements or policies that customers need before booking.
How do I add a shop to a pet business website?
Add WooCommerce when you need to sell pet food, accessories or other products online. Its setup creates the core Shop, Cart, Checkout and My Account pages, which you should keep as separate pages. Configure products, payments, shipping, tax and customer emails before launch, then place product categories or selected products on the home page.
Is Elementor necessary for a pet business website?
No, Elementor is not necessary if the block editor and your theme provide the layouts you need. A page builder can help when you want more visual control or prebuilt sections, but it adds another editing system to maintain. If you use Elementor, check responsive settings on each page and confirm that header and footer templates are published and assigned correctly.
