How to create sales funnels on WordPress

Marketing & Email Time About 60–90 minutes for a basic funnel 6 steps Updated 1 Sep 2026

The short answer

You can create a basic sales funnel in WordPress with a landing page, WooCommerce checkout, thank-you page and email sequence. The manual route is fine for simple campaigns, but you need a funnel plugin for visual step management, one-click upsells, downsells and split testing.

The route
  1. 01Map the customer journey
  2. 02Create the funnel pages
  3. 03Connect checkout and payments
  4. 04Add the manual follow-up route
  5. 05Add relevant product offers
  6. 06Test every path before launch

What you need

  • A WordPress site with admin access
  • A product or offer to sell
  • WooCommerce if you are taking payments on the site
  • An email marketing account and connected signup form
  • A payment gateway configured for test payments

Map the customer journey

Write the funnel as a short sequence before creating pages: traffic source → landing or sales page → checkout → thank-you page → follow-up emails. For a lead-generation funnel, replace checkout with an opt-in form and send the subscriber to a confirmation or offer page.

Give each page one main action. Decide what happens when someone buys, abandons checkout, declines an upsell or submits the form but does not purchase.

Create the funnel pages

Go to Pages → Add New and create the landing page, checkout support page if needed, and thank-you page. Use the block editor, Site Editor or your existing page builder to add the offer, benefits, proof, objections, call-to-action buttons and contact details. WordPress pages can be created and published from the Pages screen.

Keep the landing page focused: remove unnecessary navigation, repeat the main call to action, and make the layout work on a phone. Link the call-to-action button to the correct product or checkout destination.

Connect checkout and payments

For a store funnel, use WooCommerce for the product, cart, checkout and order confirmation. Check WooCommerce → Settings → Advanced and make sure the Cart, Checkout and My Account pages are assigned correctly. Do not assign those functions to the same page, because WooCommerce warns that this can cause bad redirects and broken payment-gateway behaviour.

Configure the payment gateway, tax, shipping, legal pages and order emails. Then place a test order with a test payment method or gateway sandbox before sending traffic to the funnel.

Add the manual follow-up route

For a simple funnel, you do not need a funnel plugin. Connect a signup form to your email service, tag subscribers by campaign, and create a short sequence: deliver the promised resource, explain the problem, present the offer, answer objections and send a final reminder.

For WooCommerce, an integration such as Mailchimp for WooCommerce can sync customers and order data for targeted campaigns and abandoned-cart messages. Wait for the store sync to finish, and avoid enabling two systems that send the same order or abandoned-cart email.

Add relevant product offers

WooCommerce can handle basic recommendations without a funnel builder. Edit a product, open Product Data → Linked Products, then add alternatives under Upsells or complementary items under Cross-sells. Upsells normally appear on the product page, while cross-sells are used in the cart.

This manual route does not create a true post-purchase one-click upsell or conditional downsell journey. Those offers depend on the checkout state, payment gateway and order status, so this is where a dedicated funnel plugin becomes useful.

Test every path before launch

Test the funnel as a new visitor on desktop and mobile. Check the button, product selection, coupon, checkout validation, successful payment, declined payment, order email, thank-you page, stock reduction and email subscription. Also test an abandoned cart and confirm that the recovery email contains the correct cart link.

A common Friday failure is a payment being marked failed while the customer is sent to a success or thank-you URL. Another is an upsell stopping after checkout because the gateway, WooCommerce and funnel layer disagree about the order status. Review the order in WooCommerce before treating the conversion as complete.

Questions

Can I create a sales funnel in WordPress without a plugin?
Yes, you can create a basic funnel without a dedicated funnel plugin by combining WordPress pages, WooCommerce, a payment gateway and an email marketing service. This works well for a landing page, checkout and follow-up sequence. You will not get advanced post-purchase upsells, downsells, funnel maps or built-in split testing without adding specialised functionality.
Do I need WooCommerce for a WordPress sales funnel?
No, you do not need WooCommerce if the funnel collects leads or sends visitors to an external payment system. You do need WooCommerce when WordPress must manage products, orders, payments, stock and customer emails. WooCommerce creates or assigns separate Shop, Cart, Checkout and My Account pages for these functions.
What pages should a sales funnel include?
A basic sales funnel usually includes a landing or sales page, a checkout or opt-in page, a thank-you page and one or more follow-up emails. An online shop may also include an order bump, upsell or downsell. Keep each page focused on one action rather than sending visitors back through the full site navigation.
How do I add email automation to a WordPress funnel?
Connect a form or WooCommerce integration to an email marketing service, then create a sequence triggered by signup, purchase or cart abandonment. Tag contacts by campaign or product so the messages stay relevant. Check that the store has finished syncing and disable duplicate notifications when both WooCommerce and the email service are configured to send the same message.
When should I use a sales funnel plugin?
Use a sales funnel plugin when you need several conditional steps, custom checkout layouts, post-purchase one-click offers, downsells, analytics or split testing. The manual WordPress and WooCommerce route is usually better for a small, stable funnel with one offer. A plugin reduces the amount of custom page wiring, but it adds another compatibility point to maintain and test.
