How to create a furniture store with WordPress
To create a furniture store in WordPress, install WooCommerce, add product categories and products, then design the homepage and catalogue with a block theme or page builder. The manual route works, but a furniture-focused WooCommerce theme is quicker when you need ready-made product layouts.
- 01Plan the store structure
- 02Install WooCommerce and set pages
- 03Add categories and products
- 04Build the homepage manually
- 05Set navigation and check mobile
- 06Choose the faster route
What you need
- A WordPress site with administrator access
- WooCommerce installed and configured
- Product photos, prices, descriptions and delivery details
- A payment provider and shipping information
Plan the store structure
Choose a small set of useful categories before you build the layout. For example, use Living room, Bedroom, Dining, Office and Outdoor. Add attributes such as colour, material, width and assembly status only when customers will use them to compare products.
Plan the main navigation around shopping tasks: Shop, Rooms or Categories, New arrivals, Delivery information and Contact. Keep product categories separate from ordinary WordPress post categories; WooCommerce product categories are designed for organising and displaying products.
Install WooCommerce and set pages
Install and activate WooCommerce, then complete its setup for currency, payments, shipping, tax and customer accounts. Confirm that WooCommerce has assigned pages for the shop, cart, checkout and account areas before changing the design.
Do not build a replacement Shop page before checking this assignment. A common failure is designing a normal page and expecting WooCommerce to treat it as the product archive. The shop catalogue is controlled by WooCommerce and, with a block theme, by its product catalogue template.
Add categories and products
Go to Products and create your categories first, adding a short description and category image where your theme supports them. Then add each product with a clear name, price, stock status, main image, gallery, description, dimensions, materials, care instructions and delivery information.
Use variable products for choices such as fabric, finish or size when each combination affects stock or price. Check that every product belongs to the correct category. Products without categories are easy to miss in category-based homepage sections and navigation menus.
Build the homepage manually
The manual route is fine for a small shop. With a block theme, open Appearance > Editor and use the Site Editor to adjust global styles, the header, footer, templates and pages. WordPress lets you edit these areas with blocks, while WooCommerce provides blocks for catalogues, categories and product collections.
Make the homepage do four jobs: show one clear furniture message, link to the main categories, feature a small selection of products and explain delivery or made-to-order times. Add a product category section near the top, then a curated product collection rather than loading the entire catalogue onto the homepage.
On a classic theme, use the page editor, Customizer or the theme’s own templates instead. The exact controls vary by theme, and some themes do not expose separate shop-archive layout settings.
Set navigation and check mobile
Add the shop and important category pages to the navigation. Block themes manage navigation from Appearance > Editor > Navigation; other themes may use Appearance > Menus or a header builder. WordPress pages can be added to site navigation after publishing.
Preview the homepage, category archive, product page, cart and checkout on a phone. Check that product names do not wrap awkwardly, filters remain usable, images are cropped consistently and the add-to-cart button is visible. Large furniture images often make mobile pages slow, so resize and compress them before uploading.
Choose the faster route
If you want full control and only have a few products, keep the manual setup. It avoids changing themes later, but you must design the templates, category presentation, product cards and homepage sections yourself.

Questions
- Do I need WooCommerce to create a furniture store?
- Yes, you need WooCommerce or another e-commerce system to manage products, carts, checkout, payments and orders. WordPress on its own can display furniture pages, but it does not provide a complete shop. WooCommerce also supplies product categories, product catalogue blocks and templates that you can arrange with a compatible theme.
- Can I create the furniture shop without a page builder?
- Yes, you can create it with WooCommerce and a compatible block theme using the WordPress Site Editor. You can edit the header, footer, pages and templates with blocks, including WooCommerce product sections. A classic theme can also work, but its Customizer and archive controls may be more limited or use different labels.
- How should I organise furniture products?
- Organise products by the way customers shop, usually by room or furniture type, then use attributes for details such as material, colour, size and finish. Keep categories broad enough to remain useful and avoid placing one product in many overlapping categories. WooCommerce supports categories, tags and attributes for organising and displaying products.
- Why does my custom shop page not show my furniture products?
- Your page may not be the WooCommerce shop page, or the active theme may be controlling the product archive separately. Check the WooCommerce page assignments, then inspect the Product Catalog or Shop template used by your theme. With a block theme, edit the product catalogue template; with a classic theme, look under its Customizer or shop settings.
