How to create a magazine website in WordPress

Design & Layout Time About 1–3 hours 6 steps Updated 18 Oct 2026

DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create a magazine website in WordPress without a plugin by using categories, featured images, a static homepage, and Query Loop or theme layout tools. A magazine theme is the faster option when you need ready-made grids, sidebars, post formats, and widgets.

The route
  1. 01Plan your magazine structure
  2. 02Choose and activate your theme
  3. 03Set the homepage and menu
  4. 04Build the magazine homepage
  5. 05Publish consistent article cards
  6. 06Use a magazine theme for speed

What you need

  • A WordPress website with administrator access
  • A logo and basic brand colours
  • At least 6–10 draft articles with featured images
  • A clear category structure

Plan your magazine structure

List the main sections your publication will cover, such as News, Reviews, Features, Interviews, Opinion, or Culture. Keep the top-level categories limited so the navigation remains usable on a phone.

Create the categories under Posts before publishing regularly. Categories group related posts and can also be used to filter post listings on the homepage.

Choose and activate your theme

You can build the design manually with a block theme or a classic theme. Block themes let you edit headers, footers, templates, navigation, styles, and post listings from Appearance > Editor; classic themes generally use the Customizer, widgets, and theme-specific settings.

To install a theme supplied as a ZIP file, go to Appearance > Themes, add or upload the theme, then activate it. Preview it first where possible. If the preview is blank or the theme is reported as broken, investigate before activating it on a live site.

Set the homepage and menu

Create a Home page and, if required, an empty page called Blog or Latest Articles. Go to Settings > Reading, choose A static page, then assign the Home page as the homepage and the Blog page as the posts page. WordPress otherwise shows the latest posts on the homepage by default.

Build the main menu with links to your key categories, About, Contact, and any newsletter or subscription page. In a block theme, edit the Navigation block in the Site Editor; in a classic theme, use the menu settings or Customizer.

Build the magazine homepage

With a block theme, edit the homepage template in Appearance > Editor. Add a large lead story, then use one or more Query Loop blocks for category sections such as Latest, Reviews, or Opinion. Set each query to a category, choose a grid or list layout, and add the Featured Image, Title, Excerpt, Date, Categories, and Pagination blocks as needed.

With a classic theme, use the theme’s homepage sections, widgets, Customizer settings, or a page builder if the theme supports one. Do not assume that adding an image inside an article will place it in a homepage card: many layouts use the post’s separate Featured Image field.

Publish consistent article cards

For every post, select one primary category, write a short excerpt when the layout uses excerpts, and set a Featured Image from the post settings sidebar. Featured images are commonly used by themes on homepages, archive pages, and post grids. Keep the main images in a consistent aspect ratio so the cards do not jump in height.

Open the homepage on a phone before launch. If images are missing, check that each post has a Featured Image, that the selected template actually displays it, and that image optimisation or lazy-loading plugins are not conflicting with the theme. These are recurring causes of magazine homepage image problems.

Use a magazine theme for speed

The manual route is fine if you are happy to assemble the homepage with blocks or your theme’s settings. It gives you control, but you must create the grids, category sections, typography, sidebar areas, post formats, and mobile styling yourself.

If you want those parts ready sooner, Bourz is a practical theme option for lifestyle and entertainment publishers. It focuses on magazine layouts, multiple post formats, widgets, social sharing, responsive presentation, typography controls, and category-style content displays. Install and customise it from the WordPress theme controls, then replace its demo content with your own posts and images.

Questions

Do I need a plugin to create a magazine website in WordPress?
No, you do not need a plugin for the basic magazine structure. WordPress can handle categories, featured images, menus, static pages, widgets, and Query Loop post listings with its built-in tools. You may still choose a theme or plugin for advanced advertising, newsletters, memberships, custom post types, or a more elaborate homepage builder.
Should the homepage show latest posts or a custom magazine layout?
A custom magazine layout is usually better when you need a lead story, category sections, and different post grids. Set a static Home page and build it with Query Loop blocks or your theme’s homepage controls. A latest-posts homepage is simpler and updates automatically, but it gives you less control over editorial emphasis.
Why are my article images not appearing in the magazine grid?
The most common reason is that the image was inserted into the article but was not assigned as its Featured Image. Check the post settings sidebar, then confirm that the homepage template includes a Featured Image block or equivalent theme setting. Also temporarily check image optimisation and lazy-loading plugins if images fail only on certain devices.
Can I create category sections without a page builder?
Yes, you can create category sections without a page builder. In a block theme, add separate Query Loop blocks, set each one to a custom query, and filter it by category. In a classic theme, use the theme’s built-in homepage sections, category widgets, or a category-specific template if the theme provides one.
Is a magazine theme better than building the layout manually?
A magazine theme is faster when you need pre-built article grids, post formats, sidebars, widgets, typography controls, and responsive styling. Building manually is still a good choice when you want a simpler site, maximum control, or fewer theme-specific settings. Whichever route you choose, check that the theme is maintained and that its demo layout does not depend on content you will not publish.
