How to add hover effects to WordPress sliders
You can add simple hover effects to a WordPress slider with CSS, provided the slider exposes a usable class or layer selector. Slider Revolution also has built-in hover styling for layers; use an add-on when you need interactive morphing rather than a colour, filter, or scale change.
- 01Identify the slider layer
- 02Add a simple CSS effect
- 03Use native layer settings
- 04Make it usable on touchscreens
- 05Use the fast morphing route
What you need
- Admin access to the WordPress site
- A slider plugin or block that lets you identify the slider or its layers
- A staging site or recent backup before changing CSS
Identify the slider layer
Open the page containing the slider and decide exactly what should react: the whole slider, an image, a button, or a text layer. Hover effects are easier to control when they target one layer rather than the entire slider.
Use the slider editor to assign a custom class if it provides that option. If it does not, inspect the front-end markup in your browser and note the existing class or ID. Do not copy a selector from a temporary editor preview if it disappears on the live page.
Add a simple CSS effect
Open Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS on a classic theme, or add custom CSS from the Styles area of the Site Editor on a block theme. WordPress supports both routes, although the exact menu depends on the active theme.
Replace .my-slider-layer with the class or selector you identified, then add a small transition and hover state:
.my-slider-layer { transition: transform 240ms ease, filter 240ms ease, opacity 240ms ease; }
.my-slider-layer:hover { transform: scale(1.04); filter: brightness(1.08); opacity: 0.96; }
Use a restrained scale, and avoid changing the layer's position unless the surrounding slider has enough space. If the effect does not appear, the selector is probably wrong or the slider's own CSS has higher specificity.
Use native layer settings
If you use Slider Revolution, select the target layer in the Module Editor, open the Design area, then open Interaction. Turn on the interaction settings and enable Hover Style & Transform. You can then change hover colours, borders, filters, opacity, scale, rotation, shadows, duration, easing and stacking order without writing CSS.
This is the better manual route when you only need a button to grow, an image to brighten, or text to change colour. The settings apply to layers, not the slide background, so selecting the wrong item is a common reason the controls seem to be missing.
Make it usable on touchscreens
Hover is a pointer interaction, not a reliable touch interaction. Keep the effect as visual feedback rather than hiding essential text or controls behind it. Slider Revolution includes a setting to disable hover styling on mobile devices, which is useful when the hover state would otherwise be applied awkwardly on touch devices.
Preview the slider at desktop, tablet and mobile widths. Check that a scaled layer does not cover navigation arrows, captions or links, and increase its hover stacking order only when it genuinely needs to sit above nearby layers.
Use the fast morphing route
For a lens-warp or distorted hover animation, install and activate Slider Revolution Hover Morph Addon from the Slider Revolution dashboard, then apply the morph effect to the required image or text layers. Adjust the effect's intensity, speed and behaviour rather than trying to reproduce the distortion with ordinary CSS.
Choose this route when you want interactive morphing on hover. For a simple colour, filter, shadow or scale change, the CSS or native layer settings above are usually sufficient and add less moving parts to the site.

Questions
- Can I add a hover effect to any WordPress slider?
- Usually, yes, if the slider outputs a selectable class, ID or layer element. Add CSS to that selector or use the slider's own hover controls. Some sliders render the visible image as a background or replace the markup during transitions, which can make a generic image selector ineffective. In that case, target the slider layer in its editor instead of styling the page image element.
- Why is my slider hover effect not working?
- The most common causes are a wrong selector, CSS specificity, an invisible layer sitting above the target, or the slider editor overriding your CSS. Inspect the live element, not just the editor preview, and check which element actually receives the pointer. In Slider Revolution, selecting the slide background instead of a layer also removes the layer hover controls.
- Can CSS create a lens-warp hover effect?
- CSS can create ordinary hover changes such as scale, opacity, filters, shadows and colour transitions, but it does not provide a complete lens-warp slider effect by itself. You would need custom JavaScript, a graphics effect or a specialised slider extension. For Slider Revolution, the Hover Morph Addon is the quicker option when distortion is the actual design requirement.
- Should slider hover effects work on mobile?
- They should not be required for the slider to make sense on mobile because touchscreens do not provide a dependable hover state. Keep links and text visible without hovering, and disable the hover animation on mobile when it causes movement, clipping or accidental visual changes. Slider Revolution provides a mobile disable option for its layer hover animation.
