How to build a sports nutrition store with WooCommerce

WooCommerce Time About 2–4 hours for a small catalogue 7 steps Updated 24 Oct 2026

WOOCOMMERCE
The short answer

WooCommerce gives you the core tools for a sports nutrition store: products, variations, stock, payments, tax, shipping and checkout. You can build it with any compatible theme, but a specialist theme can shorten the design work and provide suitable shop layouts.

The route
  1. 01Set the store foundations
  2. 02Create the product catalogue
  3. 03Configure payments, tax and shipping
  4. 04Check the store pages
  5. 05Style the shop manually first
  6. 06Test and launch a complete order
  7. 07Use a faster specialist design

What you need

  • A WordPress site with HTTPS and administrator access
  • WooCommerce installed and activated
  • Product names, images, prices, ingredients and stock details
  • A payment account and confirmed shipping destinations
  • Your tax approach and store policies

Set the store foundations

Run the WooCommerce setup flow, or open WooCommerce > Settings and set the store address, selling locations, shipping locations, currency, units and whether coupons are enabled. WooCommerce’s setup checklist covers products, payments, design, tax, shipping and launch tasks.

Keep the shop on HTTPS and decide your fulfilment rules before adding products. Supplements often vary by tub size, flavour and pack count, so decide whether each option needs separate stock and pricing.

Create the product catalogue

Go to Products > Add New. Use a simple product for one fixed item, such as a single creatine pouch. Use a variable product when customers choose options such as flavour or serving size; each variation can have its own SKU, price, image, stock and shipping data.

Add a clear description, ingredients, serving information, product warnings, product images, category, price, SKU and stock status. For physical goods, enter weight, dimensions and shipping class where needed. Make each variation selectable before publishing, because attributes alone do not create purchasable variations.

Configure payments, tax and shipping

Configure payment providers under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments. Then set shipping zones and methods for the places you actually serve. Check that the rates shown at checkout match your packaging, carrier and free-shipping rules.

Enable tax settings only after deciding how your business will handle sales tax or VAT. WooCommerce can calculate tax from the customer shipping address, billing address or shop address, but the correct rates and tax obligations depend on your location and sales pattern.

Check the store pages

WooCommerce normally creates Shop, Cart, Checkout and My Account pages during setup. Review them under WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced, and assign separate pages for Cart, Checkout and My Account. Using the same page for multiple functions can cause bad redirects and broken payment flows.

Add your contact, delivery, returns, privacy and terms pages, then link them from the footer and checkout where appropriate. The product pages should also make delivery timing and returns clear before a customer pays.

Style the shop manually first

You do not need a specialist theme to build the store. Keep a compatible default or general-purpose theme, then use Appearance > Editor or Appearance > Customize, depending on the theme, to set the logo, colours, typography, navigation, homepage and product layout. WooCommerce supplies the commerce functions; the theme controls much of the presentation.

This manual route is fine for a small catalogue or an existing brand site. Its drawback is that you must create the sports-focused homepage, category layouts, promotional sections and product-page styling yourself, and theme-specific WooCommerce changes may require extra CSS or template work.

Test and launch a complete order

Place a test order from a private browser window on desktop and mobile. Check product selection, variation stock, cart totals, tax, shipping, payment confirmation, order status, customer emails, stock reduction and refund handling. Also check that unavailable variations cannot be purchased.

Fix the problems before promoting the site. The Friday failure to avoid is a checkout that appears to work until a real customer selects a different flavour, enters a delivery address or uses a payment method you never tested. WooCommerce’s launch checklist specifically calls for a test order, payment and email checks before launch.

Use a faster specialist design

If the manual design work is the slow part, use Welldone for a sports and fitness nutrition storefront. It is designed for supplement shops, supports WooCommerce and Elementor, and provides pre-designed layouts that can reduce the amount of homepage and product-page styling you need to create.

Install the theme from Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme, activate it, then follow its setup instructions before importing or editing layouts. WordPress supports installing a theme from a ZIP file through the Upload Theme screen.

Questions

Do I need a special supplement plugin for WooCommerce?
No, you do not need a special supplement plugin for a standard catalogue. WooCommerce can handle physical products, variations, stock, payments, tax and shipping. Add another plugin only when you need a specific feature such as subscriptions, complex product bundles, advanced filtering, recurring deliveries or custom nutrition calculators.
Should flavours and tub sizes be variations or separate products?
Use variations when the choices belong to one product and need their own price, image or stock level, such as chocolate and vanilla flavours. Use separate products when the items need different descriptions, search landing pages, ingredients or merchandising. Too many variation combinations can make product management and customer selection confusing.
How should I show ingredients and nutrition information?
Put the important information in the main product description and use a consistent layout for serving size, ingredients, allergens, directions, warnings and storage information. Add clear label images as supporting material, but do not make customers open an image to find information needed to choose or safely use the product.
Can I build the store without Elementor or a specialist theme?
Yes, WooCommerce works with a compatible general-purpose or default theme. You can build the shop with the block editor or the theme customizer. A specialist theme is mainly a design shortcut: it can provide suitable homepage sections, shop layouts and product templates, but it does not replace WooCommerce configuration or order testing.
Why are my WooCommerce product variations not appearing correctly?
The usual cause is that attributes were added but not enabled for variations, or that variations were not created and given prices and stock. Edit the product, confirm the attributes are used for variations, create the combinations, save each variation’s data and test the product from the customer-facing page.
