How to generate product QR codes in WooCommerce

WooCommerce Time About 20 minutes for a plugin setup, or 5–10 minutes per product manually 6 steps Updated 6 Oct 2026

The short answer

WooCommerce does not include a built-in product QR-code generator. For a few products, create a QR code from each product URL and add the image to the product page; for automatic display, short links, bulk creation or analytics, use a WooCommerce QR-code plugin.

  1. 01Choose what the code opens
  2. 02Create a code manually
  3. 03Add the image to the product
  4. 04Install a QR-code plugin

What you need

  • A WooCommerce store with published products
  • Administrator access to WordPress
  • The final product URLs or a QR-code plugin

Choose what the code opens

Decide whether scanning should open the product page, a custom landing page, a product manual or another destination. For shelf labels and packaging, the product page URL is usually the simplest choice.

Use the final public URL, including the correct domain and HTTPS address. If you later change the slug or domain, a static QR code may stop working unless the old URL redirects to the new one.

Create a code manually

For a small catalogue, use a QR-code generator to create a code from each product URL, then download the result as a PNG or SVG. SVG is usually better for printed labels because it can be resized without becoming blurry.

Open the downloaded image on a phone before using it. Test both the code and the destination page, especially if the product requires login, has a regional URL or uses a mobile-specific layout.

Add the image to the product

Edit the product in Products, place the QR image in the product description or short description, and save the product. You can also upload the image to the Media Library and add it to a custom product template or page-builder section.

This manual route is fine for a handful of products. Its drawbacks are that every code must be created and placed separately, product URL changes require rework, and WooCommerce will not provide automatic scan counts or bulk updates.

Install a QR-code plugin

Use a plugin when you need codes generated from product data and displayed automatically on single-product pages. Install and activate it from Plugins, then open the plugin's settings and choose the code content, size, colour and display position.

Many WooCommerce QR tools can encode the product page URL, a custom URL, an SKU or another product value. Product QR extensions commonly offer placement before or after the add-to-cart button or near the product meta, while some also support bulk generation and printable labels.

Configure and test the display

Set the QR code to appear on the single-product page, then check a published product on desktop and mobile. If the plugin offers a shortcode or block, use that when your theme does not show the automatic placement in the right location.

Scan several products, including a variable product and an out-of-stock product if you sell them. A common failure is a code appearing in the wrong template area, being hidden by the theme, or pointing to an old URL after a product slug change.

Use the fast plugin route

For the quickest setup, use WPC Product QR Code for WooCommerce. It requires WooCommerce, adds a QR icon to single-product titles by default, supports placement changes and provides shortcodes for page builders, blocks and widgets. Its premium features include short QR URLs and scan statistics.

Install it, go to WPClever > Product QR Code, configure the slug, text, logo and placement, then open a product page and scan the result. This is the practical choice when you need automatic product-specific codes rather than manually maintained images.

Questions

Does WooCommerce generate product QR codes by itself?
No, core WooCommerce does not provide a built-in tool for generating and displaying QR codes on product pages. You can create images from product URLs manually, but automatic generation, placement, bulk handling and analytics require a QR-code plugin or custom development. WooCommerce extensions commonly add these controls through their own settings and product-page integrations.
What should a product QR code contain?
A product QR code should usually contain the product page URL so a phone opens the correct product after scanning. You can instead encode a custom landing page, instruction sheet, reorder form or SKU, but an SKU alone will not open a product page unless your store or scanning system knows how to look it up.
Will the QR code keep working if I change the product URL?
A static QR code will keep containing the old URL, so it may fail after a slug or domain change unless you retain a redirect. A QR plugin that uses a short redirect URL can make destination changes easier to manage, but you should still test old printed codes after changing product links. WPC Product QR Code documents short URLs that redirect to the product URL.
Can I generate QR codes for all WooCommerce products at once?
Yes, but not with the core WooCommerce product editor alone. QR and barcode extensions can offer bulk generation for all products, selected products, categories or tags, and some can create printable PDF labels. Check the generated files and scan a sample before printing a complete catalogue or batch of packaging.
