How to organize products by brand in WooCommerce

The short answer

WooCommerce now includes a dedicated Brands taxonomy, so you can create brands, assign them to products, and give each brand its own archive page without extra code. The manual route is fine for basic stores; use a plugin when you need polished logo grids, filters, or more control over brand displays.

The route
  1. 01Choose one brand system
  2. 02Create your brand terms
  3. 03Assign brands to products
  4. 04Check the brand archive pages
  5. 05Add ways to browse brands
  6. 06Use the fast display route

What you need

  • A WooCommerce store with Products access
  • Admin access to WordPress
  • A list of your approved brand names and logos

Choose one brand system

Use WooCommerce’s dedicated Brands taxonomy for manufacturers, labels, or makers. Do not create brands as product categories unless your shop is genuinely organised around brands rather than product types.

Also avoid creating a separate global product attribute called Brand unless you have a specific integration that requires it. Using both systems can split assignments between two different taxonomies and make filters, imports, and archive pages inconsistent.

Create your brand terms

Go to Products > Brands. Add each brand with its name, optional slug, description, parent brand, and thumbnail or logo, then select Add new brand.

Use consistent spelling and capitalisation. If you sell a group of related labels, you can use a parent brand, but do not create a hierarchy merely to make the list look tidy. Deleting a brand removes its product assignments but does not delete the products.

Assign brands to products

Go to Products > All Products and edit a product. In the product editor, find the Brands panel, select one or more existing brands, and choose Update or Publish.

For a large catalogue, use the built-in CSV importer. The column heading is Brands; separate multiple brands with commas, and use Parent > Child for a hierarchy. Export a small sample first so your import uses the correct format.

Check the brand archive pages

WooCommerce creates an archive page for each brand and lists the products assigned to it. Open a brand from the Brands screen or visit its archive URL to confirm that the expected products appear.

If you change the brand URL base under Settings > Permalinks, select Save Changes afterwards, even if you did not change another permalink setting. Then test both a product URL and a brand archive URL. This prevents old rewrite rules from leaving brand pages returning errors.

Add ways to browse brands

Add brand links to your navigation or a shop landing page. You can use the product_brand_list shortcode for an A–Z list, product_brand_thumbnails for a logo grid, or brand_products to show products from selected brand slugs.

Classic themes can also use the WooCommerce Brand Layered Nav and Brand Thumbnails widgets. Block themes may use the Site Editor, brand archive templates, or Product Filters blocks instead. The exact display depends on your theme and WooCommerce setup.

Use the fast display route

If the native Brands tools organise your catalogue but you want a more finished shop-by-brand section, use Perfect WooCommerce Brands. It is suited to stores that need brand grids, logos, brand links on product pages, customer filtering, and search-friendly brand pages without assembling each display manually.

Install the plugin from Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin, activate it, then configure its brand display settings and check the result on desktop and mobile. Keep one source of truth for assignments if you already use WooCommerce Brands, and check whether the plugin imports or maps your existing brand terms before adding duplicates.

Questions

Can WooCommerce organise products by brand without a plugin?
Yes. Current WooCommerce versions include a native Brands taxonomy. Create terms under Products > Brands, assign them in each product’s Brands panel, and WooCommerce generates an archive page for each brand. You may still want a plugin for richer logo grids, advanced filtering, or more control over how brand information appears across shop and product pages.
Should brands be product categories or attributes?
Use the dedicated Brands taxonomy when brands need their own archive pages, logos, descriptions, or navigation. Categories are better for product types, while attributes are mainly for variation choices and filtering such as size or colour. Creating a separate Brand attribute alongside Brands can split your data and make imports or filters confusing.
Can one WooCommerce product have more than one brand?
Yes. WooCommerce lets you select one or more brands in the product editor. In most catalogues, assign one manufacturer brand per product unless the product genuinely represents multiple labels. Multiple assignments can make brand pages and filters less clear, especially when shoppers expect each product to have one manufacturer.
How do I show a brand filter on the shop page?
Use a brand filter supplied by your theme, WooCommerce blocks, or a compatible filtering extension. In classic themes, WooCommerce provides a Brand Layered Nav widget; other filtering tools require you to enable the Brands taxonomy and choose which brand terms to display. Test filters together with categories and attributes before publishing them.
Why is a brand archive page empty or returning an error?
An empty archive usually means no products are assigned to that exact brand term, or products were assigned to a different Brand attribute or duplicate term. If the page returns an error after changing the brand URL base, go to Settings > Permalinks and select Save Changes, then test the archive again.
