How to record videos in Gravity Forms
Gravity Forms does not natively record video from a visitor's camera. You can accept prerecorded clips with its File Upload field, but in-form recording needs a recorder integration or custom development. For the fast route, connect Pipe and add its recorder field.

What you need
- A working Gravity Forms installation
- Administrator access to WordPress
- A Pipe account if you want in-form recording
- An HTTPS-enabled site for camera and microphone access
Choose recording or uploading
Decide whether visitors should record inside the form or upload a video they already made. Gravity Forms includes a File Upload field under Advanced Fields, but that only accepts an existing file; it does not open the visitor's camera or create a recording.
If you need genuine browser recording, the manual alternative is custom JavaScript using the browser's media-recording features plus your own upload and storage endpoint. That route also leaves you responsible for permissions, file handling, limits, security and mobile-browser differences, so it is usually a development project rather than a form setting.
Create the basic form
Go to Forms in WordPress and create a new form, or edit the form that should receive the video. Add the usual fields first, such as name, email address and written instructions.
Tell people how long the video should be, whether they need to show their face, and what to do if their browser blocks camera or microphone access. Keeping the recording requirement clear prevents incomplete submissions.
Install and connect Pipe
For in-form recording, install the Pipe video recording add-on from Forms → Add-Ons, then activate it. Open Forms → Settings → Pipe and enter the Pipe account hash and API key before saving the settings. The connection should show successful status indicators; if it fails, check that the account hash and API key have not been pasted into the wrong fields.
Gravity Forms identifies the Pipe video recording integration as a way to record from desktop and mobile browsers, with Pipe handling conversion and storage.
Add the recorder field
Open the form editor and add the Pipe or Pipe Recorder field from the advanced fields area. Open its field settings and choose the available recording options, such as the required resolution or whether the recording should be saved when the visitor stops recording. The exact options depend on the connected Pipe account and add-on version.
Do not rely on the editor preview to judge the recorder. The recording interface may not appear in the backend block editor, but it should load on the published form.
Embed and test the form
Embed the form on a page using the Gravity Forms block or shortcode, then test the published page. When you press the record control, the browser should ask for camera and microphone permission. Allow access, record a short clip, stop it, review it if the interface offers that option, and submit the form.
Test from a desktop and a phone before launch. The common Friday-afternoon failure is testing only while logged in on a desktop, then discovering that the public page, mobile browser, camera permission or storage connection behaves differently. If autosave is enabled, stopping the recording may save it even when the form is never submitted, so check your Pipe storage and retention settings.
Use the fast route
The quickest practical option is the Gravity Forms Pipe Add-On: connect the service, add its recorder field, embed the form and test one desktop and one mobile submission. It is designed for video responses rather than ordinary file uploads, and Pipe can convert recordings to MP4 and store them or push them to supported storage destinations.
Use the ordinary File Upload field instead when visitors already have video files and you do not need camera recording. Choose custom development only when you need a different recorder workflow, storage model or interface and can maintain the browser-side code.

Captures videos from desktop and mobile devices with secure storage, for video submissions instead of ordinary file uploads.

Questions
- Can Gravity Forms record video without an add-on?
- No, Gravity Forms does not provide a native video-recording field. Its built-in File Upload field can receive a prerecorded video, but recording from a visitor's webcam or phone camera requires a recorder integration or custom development. A custom solution must also handle browser permissions, uploads, storage, file limits and mobile compatibility.
- Can visitors record video on a phone?
- Yes, the Pipe video recording integration is intended to support desktop, tablet and mobile browsers. Test the published form on the phone models and browsers your audience uses, because camera permissions, orientation, bandwidth and storage behaviour can differ from desktop. Do not treat a successful logged-in desktop test as proof that mobile recording works.
- Why does the recorder not appear in the WordPress editor?
- The recorder may not display as a live camera interface in the backend block editor. Embed or publish the form and inspect the frontend instead. If it is missing there, check that the add-on is active, the Pipe account credentials are correct, the form contains the Pipe recorder field, and the page is using the intended form ID.
- What is the difference between video recording and a File Upload field?
- A File Upload field asks visitors to select an existing file from their device. A video recorder field opens the browser's camera and microphone workflow so visitors can create a clip during form completion. Uploading is simpler when users already have videos; recording is better for testimonials, applications, feedback and other prompted responses.
- Why is my Pipe connection failing?
- The most common setup mistake is putting the Pipe account hash in the API key field, or the API key in the account hash field. Recopy both values from the Pipe account area, save the settings again, and look for successful connection indicators. Also confirm that the form is running on HTTPS so browsers can grant camera and microphone access.
