How to reward affiliates for user signups
To reward affiliates for user signups, use AffiliateWP with a supported registration integration and assign a flat referral amount for each account created through an affiliate link. Generic WordPress registration forms need custom development, so check the signup flow before configuring payouts.

What you need
- AffiliateWP installed and activated
- An enabled registration method such as WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, Gravity Forms, or AffiliateWP registration
- Admin access to WordPress
- A test affiliate account and test email address
Define the signup reward
Decide which account creations qualify and whether the reward should be paid immediately or reviewed first. Signup commissions are normally flat-rate amounts, not percentages, and you can use different amounts for different registration methods.
Also decide whether a signup made during checkout should earn both a signup referral and a sales referral. If that would overpay affiliates, plan to disable the checkout signup referral.
Choose a supported signup flow
AffiliateWP can track signups made through its affiliate registration form and supported integrations such as WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, Gravity Forms User Registration, Ultimate Member, and UserPro. Affiliates must send visitors through tracked referral links for the signup to be attributed correctly.
For a normal WordPress registration page or an unsupported membership plugin, there is no universal built-in switch. You will need a custom integration that identifies the referring affiliate and creates the referral, or you will have to add referrals manually. That route is workable for occasional signups but is a poor fit for a busy programme.
Enable the registration integration
Go to AffiliateWP » Settings » Integrations and enable the signup referral option for the registration method you use. The relevant settings only appear when the matching integration plugin is active.
For WooCommerce, enable WooCommerce Registration. For Easy Digital Downloads, enable its registration option. For Gravity Forms, enable Gravity Forms User Registration. AffiliateWP then displays a referral amount field for the selected method.
Set the amount and status
Enter the flat amount to award for each qualifying signup, then choose the default referral status. Use Unpaid when you want the referral recorded but held for your normal payout process, or Pending when someone must review it before it can be approved.
If you reward affiliate registrations, check whether Require approval is enabled under AffiliateWP » Settings » Affiliates. With approval required, the signup referral is delayed until the new affiliate is approved.
Stop duplicate referrals
Watch the checkout path closely. A WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads customer can create an account and place an order in the same session, which may create both a signup referral and a sale referral.
Enable the relevant Disable Checkout Referral option if you want the purchase referral to be the only commission from checkout. Also disable overlapping form-based referral settings when the same registration is already being handled by Signup Referrals, or the affiliate may receive two credits for one person.
Test the complete journey
Create a test affiliate, copy its referral URL, and open that URL in a private browser window. Complete the exact registration flow your visitors use, then check AffiliateWP » Referrals for the new entry, amount, status, and description.
Test a second case where the visitor registers during checkout. This is the Friday-afternoon failure point: the signup appears to work, but the checkout integration creates an unexpected second referral. Check the referral list and your affiliate email notifications before announcing the programme.
Take the fast route
For the quickest setup, use AffiliateWP Signup Referrals. It adds flat-rate commissions when referred visitors register through supported account and registration flows, so you configure the integration, amount, status, and duplicate-referral rule instead of building custom tracking.
This is the sensible route when signups happen regularly or when several plugins create accounts. It does not make arbitrary registration forms compatible by magic, so confirm that your form or membership plugin is one of the supported integrations before relying on it.
Let AffiliateWP Signup Referrals do it
Adds flat-rate AffiliateWP commissions when referred visitors create accounts, rather than waiting for a sale or form submission.

Questions
- Can I reward an affiliate for any WordPress user registration?
- No, not automatically. AffiliateWP Signup Referrals supports particular registration methods and integrations, including AffiliateWP registration, WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, Gravity Forms User Registration, Ultimate Member, and UserPro. A custom WordPress registration form usually needs custom development to connect the signup to the referring affiliate and create a referral.
- Are signup commissions percentage-based?
- No. Signup Referrals uses a flat-rate amount for each registration type, so you set a fixed reward for a WooCommerce signup, affiliate registration, or another supported method. If you need a percentage of a later purchase, use the normal sale referral process instead of treating the account creation as the commission event.
- How do I prevent a signup and sale from paying twice?
- Enable the relevant Disable Checkout Referral setting for WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads when account creation and purchase happen together. Also check that a form integration is not creating its own referral for the same registration. Run a checkout test and inspect AffiliateWP » Referrals before launching.
- Does automatically registering users as affiliates create a signup referral?
- No. The AffiliateWP setting that automatically registers new user accounts as affiliates does not itself trigger a Signup Referral. The user must complete one of the supported registration actions enabled in the Signup Referrals settings. This distinction matters if your programme assumes every newly created affiliate account will receive a commission.
- Can I add a signup referral manually?
- Yes. In AffiliateWP, go to AffiliateWP » Referrals, select Add New, choose the affiliate, enter the amount and referral type, and set the status. Manual entries are useful for correcting missed signups or handling a small number of unsupported forms, but they do not provide reliable automatic attribution at scale.
