How to showcase products in WooCommerce galleries
WooCommerce already includes product galleries, so you can showcase a product by setting a main image, adding gallery images and arranging their order. Your theme controls features such as zoom, lightbox and sliders; use a gallery plugin when you need a more visual, custom layout.

What you need
- A WooCommerce store on WordPress 6.0 or later
- Admin access to edit products
- A set of clear product images, ideally at least 800 × 800 pixels
- A WooCommerce-compatible theme
Prepare consistent product images
Use clear images with a consistent background, aspect ratio and crop. WooCommerce recommends images at least 800 × 800 pixels because the same media is used for the main product image, catalogue images and thumbnails. Larger images are useful when shoppers need to inspect fine detail.
Give each image useful alternative text in the Media Library. Include views that answer buying questions, such as the front, back, close-up, scale and product-in-use shots.
Set the main product image
In the WordPress dashboard, go to WooCommerce > Products and edit a product. In the Product image panel, select Set product image, then choose an existing image or upload one.
Use the strongest overall product view as the main image. It appears first in the product gallery, so you do not need to add the same file again to the gallery.
Add and order gallery images
In the Product gallery panel, select Add product gallery images. Choose several images from the Media Library or upload new ones, then select Add to gallery.
Drag the thumbnails into the order shoppers should see. Remove an image with its red X when necessary; this removes it from the product gallery but keeps the file in your Media Library. Select Update or Publish when finished.
Check your theme gallery settings
Open a product on the front end and test the thumbnail navigation, mobile swipe behaviour, image zoom and full-screen view. In classic themes, the theme determines whether zoom, lightbox and slider features are available. Block themes use the Product Gallery block, where settings such as hover zoom and opening a pop-up can be controlled in the block editor.
If a compatible classic theme has disabled these features, a developer can declare support for the confirmed gallery features wc-product-gallery-zoom, wc-product-gallery-lightbox and wc-product-gallery-slider. Put theme changes in a child theme or custom theme, not a parent theme that will be overwritten by updates.
Test the gallery before launch
Check the product page on desktop and a phone. Click every thumbnail, open the full-screen view, swipe through the images and confirm that the main image does not become blank. Also check that images are sharp without making the page unnecessarily slow.
The common failure point is a theme or optimisation plugin replacing or delaying the gallery JavaScript. If thumbnails, zoom or lightbox controls stop working, temporarily disable script optimisation and test again before changing product data.
Choose the fast route for larger showcases
For a normal WooCommerce product page, the built-in gallery is usually the fastest and simplest route. If you need gallery-first product showcases, custom layouts, lightboxes, responsive galleries or galleries containing more than the standard product media area, use a dedicated gallery plugin instead of rebuilding the product template.
Envira Gallery is a suitable option when the visual gallery is the main selling feature. It provides a drag-and-drop gallery builder, responsive layouts, lightboxes, custom styling and support for image-heavy product showcases. Keep the standard WooCommerce product image and gallery working as a fallback, then check that the plugin and theme do not create two competing galleries on the same product page.

Questions
- Does WooCommerce include product galleries by default?
- Yes, WooCommerce includes a product image and product gallery on the product editing screen. Set one main product image, add additional images in the Product gallery panel and drag them into order. The main image appears first on the product page, while the other images are shown as gallery items or thumbnails depending on your theme.
- How many images should a WooCommerce product gallery have?
- There is no fixed WooCommerce limit, but a focused gallery is usually better than uploading every available image. Include the main view, useful angles, detail shots, dimensions or scale and an in-use image where relevant. Keep image dimensions and cropping consistent so the gallery does not jump as shoppers move between items.
- Why is WooCommerce image zoom or lightbox missing?
- Your theme controls many classic WooCommerce gallery features, so zoom, lightbox or the slider may be disabled by the theme. Block themes expose related controls through the Product Gallery block. Check the theme settings first; if the controls worked previously, temporarily disable JavaScript optimisation because script conflicts can also stop thumbnails, zoom or lightbox behaviour.
- Can WooCommerce product galleries include videos?
- Yes, current WooCommerce documentation describes product gallery videos as a beta feature that must be enabled under WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced > Features. Videos must be uploaded to your Media Library, and externally hosted YouTube or Vimeo videos are not supported by that core feature. Keep an image as the main product image because videos can only be added to the gallery.
- Do I need a plugin to create a WooCommerce product gallery?
- No, you do not need a plugin for a standard product gallery because WooCommerce already handles the main image, additional gallery images, ordering and removal. A plugin becomes useful when you need a gallery-first design, custom thumbnail layouts, advanced lightboxes, video presentation, social sharing or a gallery separate from the standard single-product template.
