How to set up a baby and kids store in WooCommerce
You can set up a baby and kids store with WooCommerce alone: organise products into age, clothing and category groups, add variations, then configure payments, tax, shipping and checkout. A specialised theme is optional, but useful if you want a ready-made children’s storefront.

What you need
- A WordPress site with WooCommerce installed and activated
- Admin access to WordPress
- Product names, photos, prices, stock details and dimensions
- A payment account and shipping plan
- Business and tax information for your selling region
Plan the shop structure
Decide what parents need to find quickly. Useful top-level categories include Clothing, Shoes, Toys, Nursery, Feeding, Bath and Gifts. Add age or stage groups such as Newborn, 0–3 months, Toddler and Kids where they genuinely help customers browse.
Prepare consistent product data before entering it: product name, short description, full description, price, SKU, stock, age guidance, materials, care instructions, dimensions and safety information. Do not use age ranges as a substitute for legally required warnings or manufacturer instructions.
Complete WooCommerce setup
Open the WooCommerce setup checklist and enter your store location, selling regions, currency and business email. The checklist covers products, payments, store design, tax, shipping and launch tasks. You can change these settings later under WooCommerce > Settings.
WooCommerce creates the main shop pages during setup. Check the page assignments under WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced if Cart, Checkout, My account or Shop sends visitors to the wrong place.
Create categories and attributes
Go to Products > Categories and create a simple hierarchy that matches how customers shop. Use categories for broad groups, tags for occasional descriptors, and attributes such as Size, Colour, Material or Age range for filtering and variations. WooCommerce supports parent and child categories, while attributes can define variable products.
Keep terms consistent. For example, use either 6–9 months or 6 to 9 months throughout the catalogue, not both. Too many overlapping categories make navigation and filtering harder.
Add products and variations
Add each item under Products > Add New. Select a simple product for one fixed item, or a variable product when size, colour or another option changes the price, stock or SKU. Add clear photos, a concise summary, detailed specifications, delivery information and the correct category.
For variable products, add the attributes first, enable them for variations, then create the combinations and give every purchasable variation its own price and stock status. A variation without a price may not be available for purchase or add to the cart, which is a common cause of broken clothing listings.
Configure payments, tax and shipping
In WooCommerce > Settings > Payments, enable a payment provider available in your country and complete its account verification. In the shipping settings, create zones for the places you actually serve, then add methods such as flat rate, free shipping or local pickup. Check that free shipping does not apply accidentally to every destination.
Enable tax settings only after confirming your obligations with an accountant or tax adviser. WooCommerce can calculate tax from the customer shipping address, billing address or shop address, but the software does not decide when you are legally required to charge tax.
Use the manual route, then test
The manual route is fine for a small catalogue: use WooCommerce with a suitable WordPress block theme, build the homepage and menus in the Site Editor, and add products without a specialised storefront theme. Its drawback is that you must design category pages, banners, product layouts and mobile spacing yourself. You may also need separate extensions for advanced filters, subscriptions, bundles, live carrier rates or product personalisation.
Before launch, place test orders on mobile and desktop. Check variation selection, stock reduction, tax, shipping zones, coupons, payment confirmation, order emails, refunds, guest checkout and the order status in WooCommerce > Orders. If you want the design work done faster, Debebe is a suitable optional theme because it provides baby-focused layouts, WooCommerce support, Elementor compatibility and demo import. Install it from Appearance > Themes, activate it, import only the layouts you need, and replace the demo products before making the shop public.

Questions
- Do I need a baby-specific WooCommerce theme?
- No, you do not need a baby-specific theme to sell children’s products with WooCommerce. A standard block theme can handle the shop, category pages, product pages and checkout. A specialist theme is mainly a design shortcut: it can provide suitable layouts, colour styles and demo content, but you still need to configure products, payments, tax, shipping and legal information yourself.
- How should I organise baby and kids products in WooCommerce?
- Organise products with a small set of clear categories, then use attributes for details such as size, colour, age range, material and fit. Categories should describe the main type of product, while attributes should help customers filter or choose options. Avoid creating a separate category for every age or colour unless customers genuinely browse that way.
- Why can customers not add a clothing variation to the cart?
- A variation usually cannot be added because it has no price, is out of stock, is not enabled, or its attributes do not match the options selected on the product page. Edit the variable product, check that every required combination exists, assign a price and stock status, then test each option as a customer. A variation without a price may be treated as unavailable.
- What payment and shipping settings does a children’s store need?
- You need at least one enabled payment method and shipping rules that match the places you serve. Create shipping zones before setting rates, and test an address in each zone. For children’s products, also check parcel dimensions, delivery restrictions, local pickup and whether free shipping thresholds apply to bulky nursery items as intended. Provider availability and setup requirements vary by country.
- Can WooCommerce handle product safety and age information?
- Yes, WooCommerce gives you product fields and description areas where you can publish age guidance, materials, care instructions, dimensions and safety notes. You remain responsible for supplying accurate information and meeting the rules that apply where you sell. Add important warnings to the product page rather than hiding them in a blog post, and keep manufacturer instructions available where relevant.
