How to configure vendor shipping in WooCommerce

WooCommerce Time About 30 minutes 6 steps Updated 13 Oct 2026

WOOCOMMERCE
The short answer

WooCommerce can handle shared shipping rates with zones and methods, but it does not provide vendor-specific shipping by itself. For a marketplace, use your multi-vendor plugin’s shipping tools or a compatible add-on, then test mixed-vendor carts before going live.

The route
  1. 01Define each vendor’s shipping rules
  2. 02Set up shared WooCommerce zones
  3. 03Enable marketplace shipping controls
  4. 04Configure vendor locations and rates
  5. 05Test zones and mixed carts
  6. 06Use a vendor shipping add-on

What you need

  • A WooCommerce marketplace with vendors and physical products
  • Administrator access to WordPress
  • Shipping origin, delivery regions, rates, and restrictions for each vendor
  • A staging site or test customer address

Define each vendor’s shipping rules

Write down where each vendor ships, what they charge, and whether the rate depends on weight, order value, item count, shipping class, or delivery method. Decide whether customers should see one combined charge or separate charges for each vendor.

Also record each vendor’s origin address or postcode. A marketplace cannot calculate useful vendor rates if products do not have a reliable vendor and shipping location attached to them.

Set up shared WooCommerce zones

For a simple marketplace where every vendor follows the same policy, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping > Shipping zones. Add zones for your delivery regions, then add methods such as Flat rate, Free shipping, or Local pickup. WooCommerce matches the customer to the first zone that fits, so place specific regions above broader ones.

Configure the method’s cost and tax status, then check each product’s shipping class if your rates depend on product type. This manual route is fine when the store has one fulfilment source or all vendors agree to the same rates.

Enable marketplace shipping controls

If vendors need their own rates, WooCommerce core is not enough. Its built-in shipping methods are configured by the store administrator and apply at the store level; vendor-specific settings must come from the marketplace plugin or a compatible shipping extension.

Open your marketplace plugin’s vendor or store shipping settings and enable the available vendor shipping mode. Give vendors permission to enter their shipping regions, rates, processing information, and any product or weight rules supported by that plugin.

Configure vendor locations and rates

For each vendor, enter the shipping origin and add the regions they serve. Add the vendor’s rates using the calculation type your marketplace supports, such as per order, per product, per item, or weight-based pricing. Some marketplace tools expose WooCommerce shipping settings to vendors, while others use their own vendor dashboard.

Do not assume that a vendor rate replaces the store’s rate. Check the plugin documentation for how rates are combined when a cart contains products from two or more vendors. Mixed carts are where double charges and missing rates commonly appear.

Test zones and mixed carts

Test at least one product from each vendor with addresses inside and outside the vendor’s delivery area. Then test a cart containing products from two vendors, a free-shipping threshold, different shipping classes, and a postcode boundary.

If checkout says no shipping is available, first confirm that the address matches the intended zone and that the matched zone has an active method. WooCommerce only uses the first matching zone, and a broad zone placed above a specific one can prevent the specific zone from being reached.

Use a vendor shipping add-on

For a marketplace that needs vendor-specific rates, rules, restrictions, multiple zones, or calculations based on weight and cart value, the faster route is a compatible vendor shipping add-on rather than custom code or duplicated store-wide zones.

Flexible Shipping Multi Vendor Add-on fits this job because it is designed for vendor-specific rates, restrictions, shipping rules, and zones in WooCommerce marketplaces. Install it only after confirming compatibility with your marketplace plugin, then configure one vendor at a time and repeat the mixed-cart tests above.

Questions

Can WooCommerce configure shipping separately for each vendor?
No, WooCommerce core does not provide vendor-specific shipping controls. Its built-in zones and methods are managed by the store administrator, so they are suitable for shared marketplace rates rather than independent seller rules. Use the shipping feature in your multi-vendor plugin or add a compatible vendor shipping extension when sellers need different origins, rates, or restrictions.
Is a multi-vendor plugin required for vendor shipping?
Yes, if vendors must manage their own shipping settings, you need a multi-vendor marketplace plugin or an extension that integrates with one. WooCommerce alone can calculate store-wide rates, but it does not know how to split products by vendor or give sellers separate shipping controls. Some marketplace plugins include basic vendor shipping; advanced rules may need an add-on.
Why does WooCommerce show no shipping options at checkout?
The usual causes are an address that matches no zone, a matching zone with no active method, or a broad zone listed above the intended specific zone. Check the customer’s country, state, and postcode, then review zone order and method settings. Also check whether a vendor has excluded that destination or whether a required shipping class is missing.
How does WooCommerce charge shipping for a cart with multiple vendors?
There is no single WooCommerce core rule for combining independent vendor charges. The marketplace plugin or shipping add-on decides whether rates are combined, shown separately, or calculated per vendor. Test a cart containing products from two vendors before launch, because this is where stores often produce duplicate charges, omit one vendor’s rate, or block checkout when one vendor cannot ship to the address.
