How to create a pet store in WooCommerce

WooCommerce Time About 1–3 hours for a basic store 6 steps Updated 5 Sep 2026

WOOCOMMERCE
The short answer

You can create a pet store with the free WooCommerce plugin, a suitable WordPress theme and your product, payment, tax and shipping details. The manual route is fine for a small catalogue; the fast route is to use a pet-focused theme such as Petito, then customise its shop templates.

The route
  1. 01Install WooCommerce and choose a theme
  2. 02Plan categories and add products
  3. 03Configure payments and store pages
  4. 04Set taxes and shipping rules
  5. 05Build navigation and product content
  6. 06Test and launch the store

What you need

  • A WordPress site with WooCommerce installed
  • Admin access to WordPress
  • Product photos, descriptions, prices and stock information
  • A payment account and shipping plan
  • An SSL certificate and site backups

Install WooCommerce and choose a theme

Install and activate WooCommerce from Plugins in WordPress, then follow its setup process for your store address, currency and product type. For a basic pet shop, the standard WooCommerce features are enough; you do not need another plugin just to sell food, toys, beds or accessories.

Choose a responsive theme that supports WooCommerce. The manual route is to use a general WooCommerce-compatible theme and customise the shop yourself. The faster route is a pet-focused theme such as Petito, which provides animal-shop layouts and templates so you spend less time adapting a general retail design.

Plan categories and add products

Create clear categories such as Dog supplies, Cat supplies, Small animals, Bird supplies, Pet food and Grooming. Use attributes such as size, flavour, life stage or colour when customers need to choose an option.

Go to Products > Add New and enter the product name, description, images, price, SKU and stock status. Use variable products when one listing has selectable options, such as a 10 kg and 20 kg bag of food. Do not put every size or flavour in the product title, or customers will struggle to compare options.

Configure payments and store pages

Set your shop location and currency under WooCommerce > Settings > General, then enable at least one payment method under the payments settings. Connect the payment provider, complete its account verification and use its test mode where available before accepting live orders.

Check that WooCommerce has assigned the Shop, Cart, Checkout and My account pages. A common Friday-afternoon failure is a blank or redirecting cart because the wrong page is assigned, the page content was replaced, or the theme conflicts with checkout. If needed, create fresh Cart and Checkout pages, assign them in the WooCommerce page settings and resave WordPress permalinks.

Set taxes and shipping rules

Enable tax calculations only after confirming what your business must collect with an accountant or tax adviser. WooCommerce lets you enter tax rates manually or import them, but it does not decide your legal tax obligations.

For physical pet products, create shipping zones for the places you serve and add methods such as flat rate, free shipping or local pickup. Put specific zones above wider zones because WooCommerce uses the first matching zone. Check shipping carefully for heavy litter, large beds, frozen food and restricted delivery areas.

Build navigation and product content

Add the shop and main product categories to your site menu. Create useful pages for delivery information, returns, contact details, privacy and terms. On each product page, state the contents, size, ingredients where relevant, feeding guidance, safety information, dispatch time and any delivery restrictions.

Use original, well-lit product images and write descriptions for pet owners rather than copying supplier text. Add stock alerts and review your wording for products that may be unsuitable for particular breeds, ages, allergies or medical conditions.

Test and launch the store

Place a complete test order on a phone and a desktop. Check category links, product variations, stock reduction, coupon behaviour, shipping rates, tax display, payment confirmation emails and the order shown in WooCommerce > Orders. Also test an out-of-stock product and an address outside your delivery area.

Before launch, take a backup, update WordPress, WooCommerce, the theme and extensions, confirm SSL is working and remove test orders. The fast way is to import or add only your best-selling products first, use Petito's pet-shop layout, configure one payment method and one well-tested shipping zone, then expand after real orders reveal what needs changing.

Questions

Can I create a pet store with WooCommerce alone?
Yes, WooCommerce can handle a basic pet store without an extra ecommerce plugin. Its core features cover products, categories, stock, carts, checkout, orders, payments and shipping settings. You may later need separate extensions for subscriptions, memberships, advanced filters, product bundles, recurring food deliveries or carrier-specific rates, but those are additions rather than requirements for launching a simple shop.
What product categories should a pet store use?
Use categories that match how customers shop, such as dog, cat, small animal and bird supplies, then add more specific groups like food, toys, beds, grooming and health accessories. Use attributes for details such as size, flavour, age range and colour. Keep categories broad enough to browse and use attributes or filters for the finer choices.
Why are my WooCommerce Cart and Checkout pages blank?
Blank Cart or Checkout pages usually come from incorrect page assignments, missing page content, a theme or plugin conflict, or stale permalinks. Check the assigned pages in the WooCommerce page settings, create fresh pages if necessary, resave permalinks and temporarily test with a default theme and only WooCommerce active. Checkout may also redirect when the cart is empty.
Do I need a pet-specific WooCommerce theme?
No, a general WooCommerce-compatible theme can create a working pet store. A pet-specific theme is useful when you want suitable layouts, colours and templates without designing them from scratch. Petito is the faster option for this job because it is built around animal and pet businesses, while a general theme may require more customisation before the shop looks relevant to pet owners.
