The short answer

You can customize WooCommerce’s thank-you page in the Site Editor if you use a block theme, or add content with hooks on a classic theme. For a full drag-and-drop layout with coupons and upsells, use a dedicated thank-you page builder.

  3. 03Add content with a hook

What you need

  • A WooCommerce store with a working checkout
  • Administrator access to WordPress
  • A recent backup before editing theme files
  • A test product and payment method

Check which template you use

WooCommerce shows the thank-you screen at the /order-received/ checkout endpoint. The exact editing route depends on your theme: block themes use the Order Confirmation template, while classic themes use PHP templates and hooks.

In the dashboard, open Appearance > Editor. If you can open WooCommerce templates there, follow the block-theme route. If not, use the classic-theme route below.

Edit it with the Site Editor

With a block theme, go to Appearance > Editor > Templates > WooCommerce > Order Confirmation. Select the existing order confirmation blocks and change their order, spacing, colours and typography. You can also add store messages, delivery instructions, support details or product suggestions around the order information.

Save the template, then place a test order. The editor shows sample content, so confirm the real order number, totals, addresses, payment method and downloadable products on the front end.

Add content with a hook

On a classic theme, the simplest manual option is to add a small PHP function through a child theme or a code-snippets plugin. WooCommerce documents woocommerce_thankyou as an action that runs after checkout and provides the order ID.

For example, attach a function to woocommerce_thankyou and output a message, support link or campaign banner. Use woocommerce_thankyou_order_received_text when you only need to replace the confirmation wording. This route is fine for a message or small section, but it is not a visual page builder and you must escape customer or order data before displaying it.

Override the classic template carefully

If you need to change the whole classic layout, copy WooCommerce’s relevant template into your child theme while preserving its relative path and removing the plugin’s templates directory from that path. Do not edit the WooCommerce plugin or parent theme directly, because updates can overwrite the changes.

This gives you control over the markup, but it creates maintenance work. WooCommerce can flag the override as outdated after an update, and you may need to merge your changes into the newer template. Hooks are usually safer when they can achieve the result.

Test the checkout edge cases

Test at least a successful card payment, a failed payment, a manual payment such as bank transfer, a guest order, a logged-in customer order and a mobile screen. Check that order details still appear and that the page does not show a coupon or upsell before the order is actually created.

If the page is blank, shows a 404 or redirects elsewhere, check the checkout page assignment and the Order received endpoint under WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced. Theme, page-builder, redirect and payment plugins can also interfere with the confirmation flow, so temporarily isolating those plugins is a useful diagnostic step.

Use Thanko for the fast route

For a visual build without writing PHP or maintaining a template override, install and activate Thanko, then use its drag-and-drop thank-you page customizer. Add the confirmation details, thank-you message, text or media, social icons and other sections, then arrange and style them in the builder.

Thanko also fits stores that want post-purchase offers: you can display an existing WooCommerce coupon or generate unique coupons, and add upsell products after a successful order. Keep the standard order details visible, and test the page with both paid and unpaid order statuses before publishing.

Questions

Can I customize the WooCommerce thank-you page without a plugin?
Yes. A block theme lets you edit the Order Confirmation template from Appearance > Editor, while a classic theme can use WooCommerce hooks or a child-theme template override. The manual route is suitable for messages, styling and small content sections, but a full marketing layout with conditional coupons and upsells usually needs a dedicated extension or custom development.
What is the WooCommerce thank-you page called?
WooCommerce calls it the Order Confirmation page, and it normally appears at the order-received endpoint appended to the checkout URL. The endpoint is not usually a separate normal WordPress page that you edit in Pages. Its contents come from the block-based Order Confirmation template or the classic WooCommerce template and its hooks.
Why does my custom thank-you content not appear?
The most common reason is that the site is using a different rendering route from the one you edited. A block theme may use the Order Confirmation template instead of classic PHP hooks, while a page builder, redirect plugin or payment gateway may replace the normal order-received flow. Check the active theme, checkout endpoint and any plugin that controls checkout or redirects.
Should I edit thankyou.php directly?
No. Do not edit the copy inside the WooCommerce plugin, because an update will remove your changes. If you need a classic template override, copy it into a child theme using WooCommerce’s required folder structure, then monitor WooCommerce > Status for outdated overrides. Use a hook instead when you only need to add or change a small section.
Can the thank-you page show coupons and upsells?
Yes, but WooCommerce’s built-in confirmation template does not provide a complete drag-and-drop campaign builder for this. You can code conditional output with hooks, or use a page-builder extension. Thanko is the faster route when you want visual sections plus existing or generated coupons and post-purchase upsell products.
