How to display taxes by country in WooCommerce

The short answer

WooCommerce can calculate country-specific taxes without a plugin by using tax tables and customer location settings. Its standard display option is global, though, so use a dedicated plugin if each country needs different tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive prices.

The route
  1. 01Choose your tax display policy
  2. 02Enable taxes and location detection
  3. 03Add rates for each country
  4. 04Set the display options
  5. 05Test every country path
  6. 06Use a plugin for country-specific displays

What you need

  • A WooCommerce store with tax calculations enabled
  • Administrator access to WordPress
  • The tax rates and countries where you must collect tax
  • A caching setup that can vary pages by customer location

Choose your tax display policy

Decide whether your catalogue and checkout should show prices including tax or excluding tax. WooCommerce has separate settings for shop prices and cart and checkout prices, but the standard settings apply store-wide rather than choosing a different display mode for each country.

If every customer can use the same display convention, the manual WooCommerce route is usually enough. If one country must see tax-inclusive prices while another sees tax-exclusive prices, plan to use a dedicated extension.

Enable taxes and location detection

Go to WooCommerce > Settings > General, enable tax rates and calculations, and save. In the same area, set your store address, selling locations and shipping locations.

Set Default customer location to Geolocate or Geolocate (with page caching support) when catalogue prices need to reflect the visitor’s country before checkout. The page-caching option uses AJAX and may add a query string to URLs so cached prices are not reused for the wrong visitor.

Add rates for each country

Open WooCommerce > Settings > Tax, choose the relevant tax class, such as Standard rates, and add one row for each country or region. Enter the country code, any state or postcode restriction, the rate percentage, tax name, priority and whether the rate applies to shipping.

Use separate rows when countries have different rates. Check the rate table carefully: WooCommerce calculates the applicable rate from the customer’s address, so a missing country code or an overly broad row can produce a zero or incorrect tax amount.

Set the display options

In the tax settings, set Prices entered with tax to match the prices you enter on product pages. Then set Display prices in the shop and Display prices during cart and checkout to either Including tax or Excluding tax.

You can add a Price display suffix containing text such as “including tax” or “excluding tax”. If you want the cart to show each tax separately, set Display tax totals to Itemized. These settings do not, by themselves, switch the display mode separately for each country.

Test every country path

Test as a logged-out visitor in a private browser window, then enter addresses from each target country at checkout. Check the product page, shop archive, cart, checkout and order totals.

Clear page and object caches after changing tax settings. A common failure is a cache serving one country’s tax-inclusive price to another visitor. Also check that the product is marked Taxable and assigned to the intended tax class. If tax appears at checkout but not in the catalogue, temporarily compare the page with a standard WooCommerce-compatible theme to rule out a theme price-template problem.

Use a plugin for country-specific displays

The fast way to show tax-inclusive prices in some countries and tax-exclusive prices in others is to use a dedicated extension rather than maintain custom price-display logic. Aelia Tax Display by Country for WooCommerce uses customer geolocation to apply country-specific tax display rules and supports tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive pricing for international stores.

Install it from your WordPress dashboard, activate it, then configure the countries, tax classes and display rules. Keep WooCommerce’s tax rates accurate as well: a display plugin can change how prices are presented, but it does not remove your responsibility to determine which taxes you must charge.

Questions

Can WooCommerce display different tax rates by country without a plugin?
Yes. WooCommerce can calculate different tax rates by country using its built-in tax tables and the customer’s billing or shipping address. Add a rate for each country under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax, then choose which address controls the calculation. The limitation is that the standard price display setting is global, so it does not independently choose tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive catalogue prices for each country.
Why is tax missing until the customer enters an address?
Tax may be missing because WooCommerce does not yet know the customer’s location. Set a default customer location under WooCommerce > Settings > General, or allow the customer to enter a billing or shipping address before calculating tax. If you use geolocation, check that your cache supports location-varying pages; otherwise a cached page can show the wrong tax state.
Can I show tax-inclusive prices in one country and tax-exclusive prices in another?
Not with WooCommerce’s standard display settings alone. Its shop and cart display choices are store-wide, although tax calculations can vary by customer location. For genuinely different display rules by country, use a tax display extension such as Aelia Tax Display by Country for WooCommerce and test the result across product, cart and checkout pages.
Why does an inclusive product price change for overseas customers?
When a product price is entered including tax, WooCommerce treats that amount as including the store’s base-country tax rate. If the customer’s country has a different rate, WooCommerce recalculates the tax-inclusive total, so the displayed price can change. Entering prices excluding tax avoids that particular base-rate adjustment, but the final total can still differ when the customer’s country has a different applicable tax rate.
