How to create a kids clothing and toy store with WooCommerce

What you need
- A WordPress website with WooCommerce installed
- Admin access to WordPress
- Product photos, prices, descriptions and stock information
- A payment account and delivery plan
- Your shop name, logo and brand colours
Plan the shop structure
Decide which departments customers need to see first, such as Girls’ clothing, Boys’ clothing, Baby clothing, Toys and Accessories. Use categories for the product type and age group, rather than creating a separate category for every colour or size.
Before adding products, write down your delivery areas, returns policy, size information and stock units. This prevents the common Friday problem where an item is listed as available but nobody knows whether stock is counted by size, colour, pack or individual piece.
Set up categories and attributes
Go to Products > Categories and create the main shop sections. Then go to Products > Attributes and add reusable attributes such as Size, Colour, Age range, Material and Toy type. Global attributes are easier to maintain when the same sizes or colours appear across many products.
Use attributes for filtering and variations, not categories. For clothing, a product might use Size and Colour; for toys, Age range and Material may be more useful. Keep names consistent, such as using “Blue” everywhere instead of mixing “blue”, “Navy” and “Navy blue” without a reason.
Add products with useful details
Go to Products > Add New. Add a clear product name, short description, full description, regular price, sale price if needed, SKU, stock quantity, weight and shipping information. Assign the product to one or more categories and add a main image plus gallery images showing the item from useful angles.
Use a Variable product for clothing or toys with selectable options. Add the attributes, tick Used for variations, create the available combinations, then set the price, stock and image for each variation. WooCommerce supports variation-level prices, stock, weight and shipping data, but too many combinations can make products harder to manage.
Configure payments, tax and delivery
Open WooCommerce > Settings and configure the store address, currency, payment methods, accounts and privacy settings. Connect a payment gateway that supports your country and business requirements, then complete its verification before accepting real orders.
Create shipping zones for the places you deliver to and add the methods you actually offer, such as flat rate, free shipping above a threshold or local pickup. Configure tax rates or an appropriate tax service based on advice for your business location; WooCommerce provides settings, but it does not decide what your business must charge.
Build the shop navigation
Create pages for the shop, contact details, delivery, returns, privacy and terms. Add the important product categories to the main menu and make sure customers can reach the cart and account areas. WordPress menus can include pages, categories and custom links, although the exact menu screen depends on the active theme.
Keep the product page focused: show the price, stock status, size or age guidance, delivery information, returns link and a clear add-to-cart control. Check the design at phone width. Clothing shoppers often browse on mobile, and a variation selector that is difficult to use can lose the sale before checkout.
Test the shop before launch
Place test orders for a clothing variation, an out-of-stock variation, a toy and an order that crosses a shipping threshold. Check that the correct price, image, stock quantity, tax, delivery charge and order email appear at every stage.
Also test failed payment handling, coupon rules, refunds, account creation, guest checkout and the contact form. Review every product for broken images, missing size information and incorrect age guidance. WooCommerce’s pre-launch checks specifically call out taxes, shipping and product descriptions as items to verify before going live.
Use the fast route with KidXtore
The manual route is perfectly workable if you choose a WooCommerce-compatible theme and are happy to build the shop layout yourself. The drawback is the time spent designing category pages, product templates, headers, footers and mobile layouts before you have added your catalogue.
For a faster visual setup, use KidXtore, which provides prebuilt kids clothing and toy shop layouts with Elementor customisation and WooCommerce compatibility. Install and activate the theme from Appearance > Themes, import or configure its shop layouts, then replace the sample content with your categories, products, branding and policies. You still need to configure products, payments, tax, shipping and testing yourself.
Let KidXtore do it

Questions
- Can WooCommerce sell both children’s clothing and toys?
- Yes, WooCommerce can sell both product types in one store. Create separate categories for clothing and toys, then use attributes and variable products for options such as size, colour, age range or pack size. Clothing usually needs variation-level stock, while toys may only need a single stock quantity unless the product has different versions.
- How should I set up children’s clothing sizes in WooCommerce?
- Create a global Size attribute with the sizes you actually sell, then assign it to variable clothing products and mark it for variations. Add Colour as another attribute when colour affects stock or price. Create only the combinations you can fulfil, because generating every possible size-and-colour combination can create duplicate or unavailable variations.
- Do I need a plugin to create this type of store?
- No, you do not need a separate plugin for the basic store. WooCommerce handles products, variations, carts, checkout, orders and stock, while a suitable theme controls the presentation. You may later need extensions for specialist requirements such as advanced filters, size swatches, subscriptions, bundles, marketplace features or carrier-specific live delivery rates.
- What shipping information should a kids shop show?
- Show delivery areas, dispatch times, shipping charges, free-shipping conditions, tracking details and returns information before the customer pays. Add product weight and dimensions where they affect delivery, and check that the correct shipping zone applies to each test address. A shipping rule that does not match the customer’s location can cause checkout errors or unexpected charges.
- Is a specialised kids WooCommerce theme worth using?
- A specialised theme is useful when you want a children-focused design without building every shop layout yourself. A general WooCommerce theme is enough if you prefer to control the design manually. KidXtore is the faster option when you want prebuilt kids clothing and toy layouts with Elementor customisation, but WooCommerce settings and product data still need to be configured separately.
