How to display PDF files as slides in WordPress

The short answer

WordPress can show a PDF with its File block, but it does not convert each page into a responsive slide carousel. For a true slide presentation, you need a PDF slider plugin or custom development; a PDF addon is the faster option.

The route
  1. 01Choose the display you need
  2. 02Try the built-in PDF embed
  3. 03Know when core is not enough
  4. 04Install a PDF slider addon
  5. 05Create the PDF slider
  6. 06Publish and test every device

What you need

  • A WordPress site with administrator access
  • The PDF you want to display
  • A backup or staging site for testing
  • A responsive page or post where the slides will appear

Choose the display you need

Decide whether visitors need an embedded document, a download link, or a page-by-page slide presentation. These are different layouts. If a download link or basic inline viewer is enough, WordPress can handle that without a slider plugin.

Use a slide presentation when the PDF is a brochure, catalogue, report, presentation, or ebook that people should browse one page at a time.

Try the built-in PDF embed

For the manual route, edit the page and insert a File block. Upload the PDF or select it from the Media Library, then enable Show inline embed in the block settings. Set a suitable height so the viewer is not squeezed into a short box. WordPress documents this as an embedded PDF, not a page-by-page slider.

This route is fine for a simple document, but it has an important drawback: embedded PDFs may display on computers while failing to show properly in many phone and tablet browsers. It also leaves visitors with the browser's PDF controls rather than a responsive slide interface.

Know when core is not enough

WordPress core does not convert every PDF page into individual slider slides. Without a plugin, your alternatives are to convert every page into an image and build a custom slider with front-end code, or to accept the browser's PDF viewer. Both options add maintenance, and the image route can create many large files.

Do not rely on a PDF thumbnail in the Media Library as the presentation. A missing thumbnail can be caused by server image-processing support, and it does not mean the PDF has been converted into slides.

Install a PDF slider addon

For the fast route, install a slider plugin that includes PDF importing, then activate its PDF addon. The addon must be able to render each PDF page as a slide rather than merely placing the original file in an iframe.

The Soliloquy PDF Addon is one option. Its documentation requires a compatible Soliloquy licence, and the PDF addon is activated separately from the main slider plugin.

Create the PDF slider

Open the slider plugin's new-slider screen. Choose Select Files from Other Sources, select Insert PDF, then choose the PDF from the Media Library or upload it. Insert the file into the slider and wait for the pages to be processed. Soliloquy's documented workflow uses these exact controls and converts the PDF into slider images.

Large or image-heavy PDFs can take longer to process. If the upload or conversion times out, the likely causes are server upload limits or execution limits rather than the slider layout. Check the PDF size and ask your host to review those limits before repeatedly uploading the same file.

Publish and test every device

Publish the slider, insert it into the page using the plugin's block or insert control, and view the published page rather than relying only on the editor preview. Check the first, middle, and final slides on desktop, tablet, and phone widths.

Also check that text is readable, the aspect ratio is correct, navigation buttons are visible, and the original PDF link is available if visitors need to download or print it. Soliloquy notes that its PDF conversion does not work on localhost, so test on a remote WordPress server.

Questions

Can WordPress display a PDF as slides without a plugin?
Not with WordPress core alone. The File block can embed a PDF, but it does not convert each page into a responsive slide carousel. Without a plugin, you must either accept the browser PDF viewer, convert the pages into images and build a custom slider, or write custom front-end code. For most site owners, a PDF slider addon is the practical choice.
Why does my embedded PDF not appear on mobile?
Mobile PDF embedding depends on browser support, and WordPress notes that many phone and tablet browsers do not display embedded PDFs. Test the published page on actual iOS and Android devices. If the viewer is blank or replaced by a download link, use a renderer that draws pages in the browser or convert the PDF into slider slides.
Will a PDF slider preserve fonts and images?
A PDF-based slider normally renders the finished PDF pages, so the appearance is based on the PDF rather than the original PowerPoint or Keynote file. This helps preserve the document's layout, fonts, and images. Check the generated slides at full size, because low-resolution source pages or heavily compressed PDFs can still look soft.
Why is my PDF slider stuck processing?
PDF conversion can stall when the file is large, the server reaches its upload limit, or the request exceeds the server's execution time. Check the file size, wait for background processing to finish, and ask your host to review upload and execution limits. On a local development site, some PDF addons may not work at all; Soliloquy's documentation specifically excludes localhost installations.
Should I offer the original PDF for download as well?
Usually, yes. Slides are convenient for browsing, but visitors may need the original file for printing, saving, searching, or sharing. Add a clearly labelled download link below the slider unless the document must remain view-only. A slider does not prevent determined visitors from obtaining the underlying document or rendered page assets.
