DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create a fashion magazine in WordPress without a plugin by using posts, categories, featured images, the Site Editor and Query Loop blocks. Build the homepage around editorial sections such as runway, street style and beauty, or use a magazine theme with an imported demo to save time.

The route
  1. 01Plan your editorial sections
  2. 02Choose the manual route
  3. 03Set your brand and structure
  4. 04Build the magazine homepage
  5. 05Publish and check every view
  6. 06Use the fast editorial route

What you need

  • A WordPress site with administrator access
  • A block theme or magazine-style theme
  • A logo, colour palette and editorial images
  • At least five draft articles with featured images

Plan your editorial sections

Decide which categories your magazine will use before designing the homepage. A practical starting set is Runway, Street style, Beauty, Interviews and Shopping. Keep the list short enough that the main navigation remains useful.

Create the categories under Posts > Categories, then prepare several sample posts. Give every post one primary category, a clear headline, an excerpt and a consistent featured image.

Choose the manual route

You do not need a plugin to create the basic site. With a block theme, go to Appearance > Editor and use the Site Editor to change the header, footer, styles, templates and navigation. WordPress provides the necessary page, post, template and block tools in core.

The drawback is time: you must assemble the homepage, tune image sizes and create each editorial section yourself. A classic theme may instead use Appearance > Customise, so the exact controls depend on the theme you choose.

Set your brand and structure

In Appearance > Editor, set the site logo, site title, typography, colours, spacing and maximum content width. Keep body text readable and reserve display fonts for headlines. Use a restrained palette so the photography carries the design.

Edit the header template part to place your logo, primary navigation and search link. Edit the footer to add copyright text, social links and key pages such as About, Contact and Privacy. The Site Editor is designed for repeating areas such as headers, footers and sidebars.

Build the magazine homepage

Create a Home page under Pages > Add New, then set it as the front page under Settings > Reading by choosing A static page. Create a separate empty page named Journal or Articles for the posts page if you want a dedicated archive.

Arrange the page in editorial order: a lead story at the top, a two- or three-column grid for the latest features, then separate sections for each major category. Add a Query Loop block for each section and filter it by category. Inside each loop, use Featured Image, Post Title, Categories, Excerpt and Read More blocks. Query Loop supports category filters and list or grid layouts without custom code.

Publish and check every view

Add the featured image, category, excerpt and alt text before publishing each article. Make sure the image and title link to the post when they appear inside a Query Loop; these links are not enabled automatically in every layout.

Check the homepage, category archives, individual posts, search results and the menu on a phone as well as a desktop. The common Friday problem is a homepage section showing no stories because posts were given the wrong category, or because the Query Loop is still using its default query instead of a custom category filter.

Use the fast editorial route

For the quickest setup, install an editorial theme that already includes image-led homepage layouts, category sections and page-builder support. Upload the theme ZIP from Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme, install it and activate it. WordPress supports theme installation by ZIP upload from this screen.

Blake von Hauer is a suitable shortcut for a fashion-first publication because it is built around editorial layouts, image presentation, demo import and page-builder support. Import its demo on a new or staging site, replace the sample content with your categories and articles, then check the navigation and mobile layout before launch. Keep the manual block-editor route if you want fewer theme dependencies and full control over the design.

Questions

Can I create a fashion magazine in WordPress without a plugin?
Yes, the basic site can be built without a plugin. WordPress core provides posts, categories, featured images, pages, navigation, the Site Editor and Query Loop blocks, which are enough for a visual magazine homepage. You may still choose a page builder or specialist plugin later for sliders, newsletters, memberships or custom editorial features.
How should I organise fashion magazine content?
Organise articles with a small set of clear categories such as Runway, Street style, Beauty, Interviews and Shopping. Use tags for narrower subjects such as designers, seasons or locations. Give each article one main category so homepage Query Loop sections do not overlap unpredictably or leave important sections empty.
How do I make the homepage show different article sections?
Add a Query Loop block for each section and set each loop to a custom query filtered by a category. Choose a grid or list layout, then add the featured image, title, category, excerpt and read-more link inside the repeated post template. WordPress applies those changes to every post displayed by that loop.
Do I need Elementor or another page builder?
No, you do not need a page builder for a normal fashion magazine site. The block editor and Site Editor can create the homepage, templates, menus and global styles. A page builder is useful if your chosen theme is designed around it or you need more visual layout controls than the core blocks provide.
What is the fastest way to launch the site?
The fastest route is an editorial theme with a ready-made demo and image-focused homepage layouts. Install the theme, import the demo on a fresh or staging site, replace the sample logo, menus, categories and articles, then test mobile views. Do not import a demo over a live site without a backup because it may add unwanted pages, media and menus.
