How to import images from Dropbox into WordPress galleries
WordPress does not offer a Dropbox source in its core gallery tools. The manual route is to download the images from Dropbox, upload them to the Media Library, and add them to a Gallery block. For a large library, a Dropbox importer can avoid the download-and-upload cycle.
- 01Choose and organise the Dropbox images
- 02Download the images from Dropbox
- 03Upload the images to WordPress
- 04Create the WordPress gallery
- 05Check image details and display
- 06Use an importer for large folders
What you need
- A WordPress site with administrator access
- Access to the Dropbox account or shared folder
- Enough hosting storage for the image files
- Image files in a WordPress-supported format
Choose and organise the Dropbox images
Put the images for one gallery in a clearly named Dropbox folder. Remove duplicates and decide whether you need the original files or smaller web-ready copies before downloading them.
For a large folder, use the Dropbox desktop app or download smaller batches. Dropbox notes that browser and network limits can cause large folder downloads to fail, so splitting the job is safer.
Download the images from Dropbox
Sign in to Dropbox, open the folder, select Download, and save the files to your computer. A folder download may arrive as a ZIP file, which you must extract before uploading the individual images.
If the download fails, try fewer files at once or use the Dropbox desktop app. Do not treat a Dropbox share link as a permanent WordPress image source; the files should be copied to your site if you want the gallery to remain under your control.
Upload the images to WordPress
In WordPress, go to Media and choose Add New, then drag in the extracted images or select them from your computer. You can also upload them while creating the gallery.
Upload in batches if the server rejects the files or the browser times out. Check the Media Library afterwards and remove failed or duplicated uploads before building the gallery. WordPress saves uploaded images in the Media Library for later use.
Create the WordPress gallery
Edit the page or post where the gallery should appear and add a Gallery block. Choose Media Library, select the Dropbox images you uploaded, and confirm the selection.
WordPress lets you reorder images, choose the number of columns, set image links, add captions, and choose whether images open in a lightbox or at their full size.
Check image details and display
Open the gallery preview on desktop and mobile. Check the image order, captions, alt text, cropping, links, and loading speed. Add useful alternative text to images that convey information, and leave decorative images without unnecessary descriptions.
If some images are missing, confirm that they finished uploading and that the gallery uses the Media Library copies rather than temporary local files or Dropbox links.
Use an importer for large folders
The manual method is fine for a small number of images, but it becomes repetitive when a Dropbox library contains hundreds of files. An importer can connect Dropbox to a gallery system and bring in an entire folder or selected images without downloading and uploading each file by hand.
If you use Envira Gallery, the Envira Gallery Dropbox Importer Addon is designed for this workflow. It imports Dropbox folders or selected images into Envira Gallery, then lets you manage the gallery layout and responsive display from WordPress. This is the fast route when your media library already lives in Dropbox.

Questions
- Can WordPress import a Dropbox folder without a plugin?
- No, WordPress core does not provide a Dropbox folder picker for its Gallery block. Without a plugin, download the folder from Dropbox, extract the files if necessary, upload the images to the Media Library, and select them when creating the gallery. This is practical for small folders but slow for large photo libraries.
- Can I paste a Dropbox link into a WordPress gallery?
- A Dropbox sharing link is not the same as uploading an image to WordPress. You may be able to use an individual image URL in some image blocks, but the image can stop displaying if the file is moved, deleted, or no longer shared. For a dependable gallery, upload a copy to the Media Library or use an importer.
- Why does a Dropbox download fail for a large image folder?
- Large Dropbox folder downloads can fail because of browser, network, or ZIP-generation limits. Download fewer images at a time, split the folder into smaller batches, or use the Dropbox desktop app. After downloading a ZIP, extract it locally before sending the individual image files to WordPress.
- Where do Dropbox images go after I upload them to WordPress?
- Uploaded Dropbox images become WordPress Media Library items, with attachment records and generated image sizes created according to your site settings. You can reuse those images in Gallery blocks and other posts or pages. If an upload is interrupted, check the Media Library before trying again so you do not create duplicates.
