How to create an IT startup website with WordPress

Design & Layout Time About 2–4 hours manually; 30–60 minutes with a starter theme 7 steps Updated 29 Oct 2026

DESIGN & LAYOUT
The short answer

You can create an IT startup website in WordPress without custom code by building pages with blocks and editing the site-wide header, footer, colours and typography. A starter theme is faster when you want prebuilt software-service layouts, demo content and drag-and-drop editing.

The route
  1. 01Plan the site structure
  2. 02Choose the manual design route
  3. 03Create the core pages
  4. 04Set the homepage and branding
  5. 05Build navigation and site parts
  6. 06Check mobile and launch
  7. 07Use a starter design for speed

What you need

  • A WordPress site with admin access
  • Your logo, brand colours and type choices
  • Service descriptions, screenshots and contact details
  • A mobile-friendly WordPress theme

Plan the site structure

Keep the first version focused. Create a homepage, Services, About, Case studies or Projects, Blog, and Contact page. Add a Pricing page only if your offer is easy to compare.

Before opening the editor, write one clear sentence explaining who you help and what you build. Prepare a short description for each service, one primary call to action, client logos if permitted, and two or three proof points such as results, industries or integrations.

Choose the manual design route

For a manual build, use a block theme and open Appearance > Editor. The Site Editor lets you work on site styles, templates, navigation, pages and reusable patterns from one place. It is suitable when you want full control and do not need a large collection of premade sections.

If your theme is not a block theme, use the normal page editor for content and the theme’s Customizer or options for branding, menus and layout. Do not edit the parent theme’s files directly, because an update can remove those changes.

Create the core pages

Go to Pages > Add New and create the pages you planned. Build each page with a small number of clear sections: a heading, a short explanation, relevant proof, the next action and a contact route. Use headings in order and keep paragraphs short.

On the homepage, lead with the problem you solve rather than a vague claim such as “digital transformation”. Add service cards, a process section, selected work, a trust section and a final call to action. WordPress pages can be designed with blocks and then added to site navigation.

Set the homepage and branding

Publish a dedicated Home page, then go to Settings > Reading and set the site to display a static page if WordPress is still showing your latest posts. Select a separate page for posts if you plan to keep a blog.

Set the site title, logo, icon, colour palette, typography and content width before fine-tuning individual sections. In a block theme these settings are in Appearance > Editor; in other themes they are usually in Appearance > Customize or the theme’s own settings. Keep one primary accent colour and use consistent button wording.

Build navigation and site parts

Add only the links visitors need: Home, Services, Work, About and Contact is often enough for a startup. With a block theme, edit the Navigation block or the Navigation area in the Site Editor. The Navigation block can manage multiple menus and can automatically list published pages, but review the result rather than leaving every page in the menu.

Edit the header and footer as shared site parts so a change applies across the site. Put the logo and primary action in the header. Put contact details, legal links, social links and a short service summary in the footer. If you use Elementor, its Theme Builder can create shared headers and footers with display conditions; do not paste a separate footer into every page.

Check mobile and launch

Preview the homepage and key pages at narrow, medium and wide widths. Check that headings do not wrap awkwardly, buttons are easy to tap, images are cropped correctly, the menu opens, forms send successfully and no section is wider than the screen.

Also test every menu link, the logo link, contact details, privacy and cookie requirements, page titles, sharing images and the site icon. Take a backup before importing any demo content or making major theme changes. A common Friday-afternoon failure is editing a template when you meant to edit one page, so confirm whether you are changing a page, a template or a shared header before saving.

Use a starter design for speed

If the manual route is more work than you need, StartNext is a practical shortcut for this job. It provides prebuilt IT and software-service layouts, demo import and drag-and-drop editing, so you can replace the sample content with your services, case studies and contact details instead of designing every section from scratch.

Install the theme from the WordPress dashboard under Appearance > Themes, activate it, then follow its importer instructions. Import the demo on a new site or after taking a backup, and check which required plugins the theme asks you to install before editing the layouts.

Questions

Can I create an IT startup website in WordPress without coding?
Yes, you can create the site without coding by using a block theme, WordPress blocks and the Site Editor. You can create pages, edit navigation, set global colours and typography, and change header and footer areas from the dashboard. A page-builder theme is optional, but it can save time when you want more premade sections or visual controls.
What pages should an IT startup website include?
An IT startup website should normally include Home, Services, About, Work or Case studies, Contact and optionally Blog or Pricing. The homepage should explain your audience, service and outcome quickly, then support that claim with proof, a simple process and a clear contact action. Avoid creating pages for services you cannot yet describe properly.
Should I use a block theme or Elementor for an IT website?
Use a block theme when you want a WordPress-native layout system with fewer moving parts and site-wide editing in the Site Editor. Use Elementor or another page builder when you need its visual controls, templates or existing designs. Do not mix several builders casually, because each can add different spacing, templates and responsive settings that are harder to maintain.
Why does my WordPress homepage still show blog posts?
Your homepage is probably still set to display your latest posts. Create and publish a dedicated Home page, then open Settings > Reading and choose the static-page option, selecting Home as the front page. If you are using a block theme, also check the homepage template in Appearance > Editor so its layout matches the page you intend visitors to see.
Why can’t I edit the header or footer on one page?
The header or footer is usually controlled by the theme’s shared template rather than the page itself. With a block theme, open Appearance > Editor and edit the relevant template part. With Elementor, open Theme Builder and edit the header or footer template and its display conditions. If you edit a copied section inside one page, changes may not appear elsewhere.
