How to create a news or magazine website with WordPress

List the sections you will publish, such as News, Politics, Business, Sport, Culture and Opinion. Create only categories you will use regularly; a menu with too many sections becomes difficult to use on a phone.

Use WordPress posts for articles and pages for fixed information such as About, Contact, Editorial Policy and Privacy. Categories group related posts and can be used in navigation and archive views.

Choose a responsive news, magazine or block theme with readable typography, a featured-image layout, category archives and a header menu. Check that it supports the editing method you want to use: the Site Editor for block themes, or the Customizer and theme settings for many classic themes.

Do not choose a theme only because its demo looks busy. Confirm that you can control article width, image cropping, sidebar behaviour, colours and mobile spacing. The layout controls available to you depend on the active theme.

Go to Posts > Categories and add your main sections. Then create several sample posts, assigning each to the correct category and adding a featured image, excerpt, author and publication date. WordPress post settings can include the featured image, categories, tags, excerpt and permalink.

Use consistent image proportions and write short excerpts. If some posts have no featured image, your homepage cards may have uneven heights or blank spaces, depending on the theme.

Create a homepage with a clear order: a lead story, latest news, one or more category sections, a sidebar or secondary column, and a footer with useful links. With a block theme, open Appearance > Editor and use a Query Loop block to display posts by category, number and layout. The Site Editor also lets you edit templates for the front page, posts and archives.

The manual route is fine for a small publication and needs no page-builder plugin. Its drawback is that advanced magazine layouts can take time to assemble, and a theme may not provide the exact category filters, grids or ad positions you need. If the blocks available in your theme cannot produce the layout, you will need theme-specific tools, a page builder or custom development.

Create a page called Home and another called News or Latest. In Settings > Reading, choose A static page, set Home as the homepage and the other page as the posts page. The two pages cannot be the same, and content added to the posts page may be ignored because its display is controlled by the theme.

Add your key categories, fixed pages and any subscription link to the navigation. Block themes use the Navigation block, while other themes may use Appearance > Menus or the Customizer. Keep the primary menu short and put less important links in the footer.

Open the homepage, category archives, individual articles, search results and the posts page on a phone and desktop. Check that headings are readable, featured images are not cropped badly, menus can be opened, and the latest stories appear in the expected sections.

Also test a post with a long headline, no excerpt, a missing image and several categories. Clear any caching after changing the homepage or theme settings; otherwise you may be looking at an older version of the layout. Add your final logo, colours, author details, social links and advertising areas only after the structure works.
